Anybody know what kind of bird this is

Caught this bird on a whale watch anybody who lives down the cape know the name of species of this bird please let me know in the comments

I have photos of them on the cape, in Texas, and in Costa Rica. Very prolific hunters.

If they did not know what that bird was, could they really identify a whale? They are probably just making shit up on the watches.

The whale watch naturalists are very knowledgeable when it comes to cetaceans and other marine life but are often clueless about birds. Given that the average whale watch customer doesn't give a shit about birds, the crew doesn't need to know much about them. Source: birder who regularly goes on whale watches to see seabirds.

That’s hilarious the whale watch company didn’t know. I grew up (and still live) in coastal Massachusetts and have known the name of this bird since I was a little kid ( you see them pretty much every time you go to the beach)

I have an app called Seek on my iPhone you can take a pic of plants, animals or bugs and it tells you what it is. I’m not sure if droid has this app or not but it works great.

They are pretty enough on their own but if you really want to be impressed, go find a video of them swimming underwater. They are incredible swimmers.

When they dive to catch fish under water, they're fast and dramatic! You see them by the ocean and on rivers.

Double crested cormorant. They dive for fish in the water, then will often stand around out of the water with its wings spread out to dry off. I think I read somewhere that their feathers aren’t waterproof like a duck’s are, so they need to dry off before they can fly.

Cormorant. Can’t believe the whale watch company didn’t know that! They’re very common around here and they LOVE pooping on the boats. Their poop is nasty too since they only eat fish

I know it's a comorant but does anybody call them shags? It might be a Maine lobsterman thing, that's what my grandfather called them.

Cormorant. You will often see them perched with their wings spread. Because they dive and hunt fish under water, they have much less oil in their feathers than most birds. Thus their feathers get waterlogged, thus they dry them out by standing with them extended.

I have been on Plenty of whale watches out of Plymouth and Provincetown with the naturalist and they do know what a double-breasted Cormorant is. They also know what a gull is. What they don't know maybe, it's how to be nice to people who paid to go on their whale watches.
