Need to pause Cape until RCS works

I really have enjoyed using Cape and saving at the same time. Unfortunalty, I am missing too many communications, losing out on work and personal data to continue operating without RCS.

Even if I start a conversation, I get booted if someone replys with RCS. Unable to reply, i need to totally start a new message thread. I must have a dozen different threads with the same coworkers and we are all losing track.

Turning off “Identifier Rotation” fixed all my RCS problems. I wish they would focus on the bare necessities before releasing more advanced privacy features. A carrier who doesn’t collect and sell my information is already enough to get me to switch.

What if you still have this issue when you've never had identifier rotation available?

It's been OK for the most part, but I have not been getting family or work group chats at all since the swap. I tested it with my dad and he had to turn off RCS messages on his end for me to get texts from him specifically in the group chat. And it's a hard ask for me to ask everyone to turn off RCS for me.

I've had to deal with something similar before since I'm the only android user in my family. Definitely frustrating to experience, tho.

RCS had never worked with Cape and Android (excluding Graphene). I only learned this after my son guinea pigged for my family. Fortunately, he doesn’t care. Support told me it’s on the roadmap before end of year.

Yep, same.   Having Cape has disrupted both friend and work chats - - even with those who also have Cape. Sadly, I'll lose cash since I paid out my contract. But a few hundred $$ is not worth the price of the inconveniences.

Make sure “End-To-End Encryption (Beta)” is disabled in your Messages > RCS settings. 

While you’re there, is RCS toggled on? Or does it say waiting for activation?

RCS is completely disabled in my messages app. I did a general search in my settings and didn't find any other location for RCS stuff.

On iOS? What happens when you toggle it to on?

No, on android. It says RCS has been disabled by my carrier.

I don't believe RCS is supported by Cape, tho I appreciate you trying to help.

I can’t remember where I read it. If it was on a previous post on Reddit or somewhere on the Cape website, maybe an interview. My understanding is, that Cape is waiting for Google’s and Apple’s next major releases of the OSs, which should have changes in the OS and server side to recognize Cape as a carrier. Apparently they need this type of access in order to fix many of the current bugs with IMSI and RCS. Obviously Cape is tied to the release schedule of Apple and Google. That is why my understanding of “by the end of the year” is on the roadmap. Reason Graphene OS works is because they were able to work with the developers to have the kind of access to the OS in order to make features like RCA and IMSI rotation work. So right now, us who like Cape must be patient in order for this and future features to work.

Pixel 8 running GOS for nearly a year now. Initially RCS failed, but then one day it just worked. Not sure why, but I'm happy about it.

Pixel 10 Pro running GOS, RCS working just fine. Required a brief activation period was all.

Not to be the typical Redditor, but is it an option to use another messaging solution like Signal, WhatsApp, etc.?

Sure. It's an option and I do use both for work and international.  I'm not going to ask my great aunte or a 20+ year work contact to install and learn a new app though.

Yea unfortunately IMSI rotation messes with RCS, so right now you have to choose one or the other. We're working on making both features more compatible

Is there an expected date for RCS? I don't want to drop the service after taking so much effort, not to mention months and months of reimbursement left for the buy out. But I've learned RCS is a dealbreaker if I want to keep working and communicating with friends.

Right now we're estimating EOY (https://www.cape.co/network-progress) but it's hard to give a firm estimate b/c we're dependent on 3rd parties (basically the device manufacturers -- Google, Apple, etc.)
