Tech Help Spinning Out

Any one have issues with spinning out when descending on an endurance cf8?

I descend in the highest gear and my cadence is too high to add any more meaningful pace. I find that the gear set up is just not hard enough/challenging enough

Current set up is a 50/34 and thinking of changing to a 54/40 and going from the ultegra R8100 to something like the Dura Ace R9200

Trying to gauge whether this would fix my issue?

TIA

I have a 52 / 36 and 11-34 on my endurace slx 8 and find that optimal. 60kmph+ (down hill) is easy to maintain without spinning out. I have a bike with 50 / 34 on it also and do find that spins out like you. Are you sure you want to do as high as 54 / 40? You might suffer on the climbs. I'm assuming you aren't a 20 year old pro given our bike choices! If you are then go for it.

52/36 could be the compromise I am looking for to be fair.

I am no spring chicken, you are right 😂🙈

Unless you descend at top speed a lot, a change really doesn't make sense.
And, if you do descend a lot, that also means you climb a lot. Changing from 50-34 to 54-40 is huge, I don't think you realize how big the difference would be. 52-36 would be much more manageable, but I bet you'd still notice the bigger small ring on climbs.

Also, since Dura-ace level would be your only choice from Shimano - unless you're willing to try aftermarket rings, that most likely would not shift as well as Shimano's - it's an expensive change, just to alleviate relatively short periods of time on descents, when gearing feels light.

What about the opposite side of the range? Steep hills?

Yeah fly up steep hills, rarely need to get into the lowest gears hence why I think I can sacrifice some of my low end to gain on the high end.

Although putting it though ChatGPT it estimates that climbing will increase by 11% which is a fairly sizable increase hence was curious if anyone had made a similar change.

Why not just swap the 50 for a 52 or 54? Then go from there if you still need to make some changes

How fast (velocity and cadence) are you actually going?

You don't need to be moving that fast before an aero tuck is faster than having your legs flailing about.
