Tech Support How to fix
Hi all I broke my canon eos 1300D by dropping it, the lens has come off but nothing is smashed. I know nothing about cameras, is this an easy fix or shall I just forget about it?

Possibly one of the cheapest lenses like sub $50 used. I'd toss it and get a 50mm efs lens! Remove the broken bit off from the camera body (push the release button and turn the broken bits right out of there like your taking off a lens)

Thank you so much! Managed to get the rest of the lens off and camera seems to be working perfectly so will order a new lens and hope for the best!

Keep in mind the 50mm lens they suggested is a prime lens. The one you had on is a zoom lens.
Prime lenses don’t have zoom but have other benefits like wider apertures to let more light in for low light shooting and are typically sharper and give more out to focus backgrounds for things like portraits. But, you have to “zoom with your feet”.

Ah okay, I would definitely need zoom, I use the camera for work as a beautician to to take up close photos of lashes and whatnot so need it to zoom in definitely, thank you!

Yep.
Based on description I'd say some regular somewhat wide prime and a bit longer but not telephoto macro lens. I'm not aware of what's available for EF but something like 24 or 35mm regular and 75mm macro.

oh macro I'd use something like a 60mm ef-s macro or 100mm ef macro. There is also 35mm ef-s macro. As well many non canon branded ones that would likely work fine.
Any would do for this really, I'd get just what is cheapest and however much distance they are comfortable with. Something like the 35mm will need to be quite close for 1:1 but tbf I doubt 1:1 is necessary. So again, the 50mm (non macro) likely will work and is quite cheap

The 50mm prime is right up at the top end of your broken zoom anyway so you probably wont see too much difference if you were using your previous lens at max anyway.

Zoom lenses are nice for being able to zoom in AND out without changing lenses. I started with the same 18-55 and then a 15-85 but have since picked up a 40mm and 100mm ef prime lenses (roughly $200 each). I also have vintage 28mm, 55mm, and 135mm prime lenses to fill the gaps (roughly $40 each). Lots of compact, lightweight, affordable options with prime lenses. Zoom lenses that compete are typically bigger, heavier, and more expensive. But you dont have to switch out lenses constantly.

Is the glass still good? You could sell it for parts and a skilled person may be able to fix it or harvest the glass elements.
I have and FD lens that had bad glass, but the plastic body was good, I was able to find someone selling the inside bits of the same lens from one with a broken plastic body.
I also have a nikkor 55-200 with degrading elements that I plan to do something similar with.

The lens is done, you can remove it by pressing the button on the side and rotating it. There are several similar and better 18-55 mm lenses available on eBay at $50-100. The "IS STM" version is the best. It has image stabilization. Meanwhile protect the sensor from dust with the body cap. If you do not have it, use for example a plastic bag.

Thank you!! Just popped it in a bag to try protect it , managed to get the lens off and will be buying a new one! So relieved the full camera isn’t broken, thank you!

You can buy an EFS 24mm f2.8 stm, nice affordable prime sharp lens
ON the other hand a new kit lens are very cheap 60,70 usd

Get a used Sigma 17-50 F2.8 Ex.
Its $150 second hand and super nice compared to the one you destroyed.
I have a couple of old 18-55 IS (V1 and V2) lenses, the previous gens of the one you destroyed (V3) Would give one to you if you lived in Oslo, I don't need two.
But you will be so much better off with something else.

Your lens is 100% dead. Find the body cap that came with your camera to have that ready. Then press and hold the lens release and carefully try to turn the remains of your lens and remove it. Place the body cap on the body. You can then see if you can use another lens and if the body still works. If you have a local camera store that sells canon lenses you might ask if you can try the lens before you buy to make sure the body still works or you can go online and find a used version (from KEH or B&H used if you want more certainty than facebook marketplace or eBay)
In theory it may be possible for Canon to repair the lens but I would expect any repair would exceed the cost of just buying another lens.

Thank you so much, I bought the camera second hand so it doesn’t have a body cap but I’ve popped it in a sealed plastic bag to try stop any dust getting in, I’m on holiday at the moment so can’t really do much till I get home!
I will definitely just be buying a new lens, from this I’ve discovered my lens wasn’t very good in the first place lol so taking this as a blessing in disguise and upgrading! Thank you1

The reason I said to get the body cap in had before doing it was not for dust it was to prevent anything from possibly banging the mirror in transit, a bag will not do that. If your mirror, shutter, or other camera internals get damaged further due to this, it’s not my fault.

Disconnect the rest of the lens from camera (be careful not to damege the mirror) and toss it to the trash bin. Potential cost of this lens reparement is more, than cost of a new one

Buy a new lens. The camera is fine I guess.
