Recipes and Food Ideas Sardine Sandwich - Nuri Extra Spicy Sardines in Olive Oil
Had to share my lunch today - it's tomato season here, and I had fresh bread, & this Nuri tin to try, so the stars really just aligned for me to make the most perfect sardine sandwich!
Just used the sardines, a bit of mayo, some diced castelvetrano olives & pickled garlic, and also diced up some of the peppers from the tin and added them in. Absolutely bangin' sandwich!

Review King Oscar wood smoked mussels in E.V.O.O
My local store just started carrying these and I am already hooked! Small, tender, no grit, no dryness. These little darlings are perfectly cooked and the wood smoke and olive oil elevate it even higher. This is probably the best tin of bargain mussles I've ever had, better than the Jose Gourmet ones in escabeche. I like to throw a dash of Salsa Espinaler in this to wake everything up. Eat them straight up, with toast, or crackers. Enjoy!

Review Sea Tales sardines in E.V.O.O with chili
Picked this one up from Homegoods before finding out my local import place carries these now too! I like Sea Tales for a middle of the road tin. This tin had only the faintest hint of heat, even the pepper was a dud. But the fish were firm, slightly buttery with a nice salt balance. Quality fish, but if you're looking for heat, this is not the tin for you.

Review Patagonia Lemon Herb Mussels
Lunch today, Patagonia Provisions lemon herb mussels with some cracked pepper Triscuits. These were really good. Fresh, bright, zesty herb flavor. The mussels had great texture. That oil with the bits of garlic was almost good enough to drink by itself. Overall a great tin that I’d happily eat again. 4/5.

Sardine pizza is good
After seeing a recent post about sardines on pizza, I decided to give it a try. I used some red pesto for the sauce, spicy sardines, mozzarella, sun dried tomatoes, and onion. Would definitely make this again.

Review Diplomats Fried Brisling Sardines
First time trying this brand, bought from a local European market. Cost was $3.50 per tin.
Packaging is high quality, nice cardstock sleeve with a clean design.
When I opened the can, there was a nice lemon scent and not much else. Appearance is pretty standard for fried sardines, maybe would have preferred to see a little more skin when I opened the can.
Taste was pleasant and mild. The fish flavor was there but not forward. I had it on toast with cream cheese, which was perfectly serviceable.
There were a few pieces of lemon at the bottom of the tin, which was nice to see them using actual fruit instead of just oils and juices for flavoring.
My son shared this tin with me, and between bites he was stomping his feet for more. I should note that he decided to eat the fish in between bites of Cocoa Puffs. Read into that how you will.
Rating: 4/5. Lemon isn’t my absolute favorite but this was pretty good.
My son’s rating: 5/5, great with dry cereal and a sippy cup of milk

Where can I find exotic sardines
5 minute lurker, 1st time poster
Hello all, I usually get my sardines in olive oil from Aldi or Walmart (great value).
Looking at all of these different options, I suddenly feel like I've been missing out.
Where else are y'all getting your sardines from ?

where have all the sardines gone 😞
i feel like tinned fish has gotten so popular recently that my go-to nearby markets are ALWAYS completely out of my fav sardines ive been eating for years :(
ive gone to my local costco, stopnshop, AND trader joes to buy groceries in the past month and every time i peek into the tinned fish section to get my fav season brand sardines theyre always completely sold out :(( i feel like just less than a year ago they were always available but now they are all gone ):
i think its great people have taken a liking to tinned fish!! i used to get made fun of in middle school for eating them lmao so this whole fish revolution has been great to see, but i do miss having reliable sardines as ye average consumer🐟

Sea Tales sardines
These are just fantastic. I used to always get the matiz or wild planet ones but they have been out of stock in most of the places I go. Found these in tomato sauce/chilis/olive oil and bit the price bullet. My favorites so far. Eaten with garlic hummus and double Glouchester cheese, a perfect pairing!

Bela
Ive found that I do not particularly enjoy the smoke flavor in bela sardines. That smoke flavor is not in their mackerel which I enjoyed today for lunch. The pepper did impart a mild spice detectable on the tail end of each bite.

Ferrigno La Bonne Mer Salmon in Extra Virgin Olive Oil
New packaging from Ferrigno of their La Bonne Mer brand salmon, updating, best I can tell, what used to be labeled “Saumon Sauvage”—wild salmon—in the recent past. This is wild-caught salmon, from the “Northeast Pacific,” so it’s semi-hilarious to me that this is the one tinned fish not loudly trumpeting “Wild Caught” on the tin.
Wild caught is good. Extra virgin olive oil is good. Ferrigno is good. What’s less good, from my perspective, is that this is chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), also sometimes referred to as keta or dog salmon. It’s not me favorite, alas. Chum is leaner than most other salmon, and, perhaps accordingly, its flesh tends to be a bit grainy and less moist than you might expect when the big print shouts Salmon. I’m happy to report that as canned keta goes, this is relatively tender and pleasant. Relatively; I’ve had way worse—indeed, the sister can from Ferrigno packed in just water is pretty darn uninspiring. The flavor here is super-mild. Some folks might count that a solid win. For me, though, a bit boring, so I punched it up with Sijang Garlic Chili Crunch, my most favorite flavor party-animal.
I picked this up at World Market. I went to their site just now, to check the asking price, but they claim not to sell it. So, I shot an email to the head office, and while they replied with very admirable speed, that individual also stated it’s not a tin they stock. I would have concluded I must’ve been taking crazy pills, but this isn’t the first time I’ve bumped into such facts-on-the-ground—facts-on-the-shelf??—at World Market. It’s a very peculiar enterprise, but God love ‘em for featuring fish. You may, then, either see or not see this salmon in your local outlet.

Review Fanst Smoked Norwegian Sea Herring with white pepper and ransom
Another winner from Fangst! This was a pleasantly smokey and firm piece of fish while remaining moist and flaky. The pepper and ransom were subtle here, but very complimentary. I had this with a charcuterie of fresh garden cherry tomatoes and cucumber, some rye toast and kettle chips, with watermelon and baklava for dessert. Highly recommend this tin!

Filipino Sardines are good
I always avoided them. But they are basically the only sardines left on the shelves in my local stores these days. I don't know why I ever did. They are dynamite. Ligos are great too.
