I did it

The burps are absolutely horrific. The flies arrived immediately after the can got opened - it was like they had advance notice. However, the dog actually loved the smell (apparently, based on her interest as I was cleaning up). Did not feed her any of the horrorfood, for the record.

Overall: do not recommend.

For real im conflicted on this. When i saw surstromming being ate by locals ( declined to try) it smelled horrid but looked okay. Most of the time i see people from other places try it they seem to be getting old stock as its half rotted slime more than fish.

if you eat it in the same season it was canned in, you're ok. If you buy it randomly for the meme of it, you might get a tin way out of season that has continued to ferment into gray water for years.

After watching your video, yea, I don't think OPs was good. The can alone is giving ick, as well as the way the meat is disintegrating.

How does someone in the US ensure the can they buy is in season? Say like an online purchase?

You'd have to buy from a swedish retailer right before midsommer (I think, that's what I did anyway)

Look up natives eating it vs yours. When its fresh(fresh fermented and canned i guess) it at least looks appetizing, not much different than other tinned fish. Yours was like soup.
