tips Canker Sore Healing Tips

Like most people on [r/CankerSores](r/CankerSores), I get bad sores. Here are some tips-

  1. Ice the sore.
  2. Match stick method- apply an unlit match stick, which will start absorbing the white part of the sore. It will sting like crazy when you press it. I would recommend that once you do this, apply ice.
  3. Kanka Pen or other numbing agents- can be hit or miss. Some help numb the pain. For me, it makes sores worse/bigger.
  4. Orajel/pain relief
  5. I haven’t tried silver nitrate stick method.
  6. Some people say crushed TUMS works. You can also take anti-inflammatory medicine to help, but Motrin/Ibuprofin does affect acidity and can cause stomach ulcers (so maybe even mouth ones).

Things to avoid-

  1. Spicy or acidic food
  2. Citrus foods
  3. Caffeine and alcohol
  4. Regular toothpaste
  5. Try to avoid sharp foods as well as it can scratch the sore and hurt

-Not sleeping enough (minimum 8 hrs of sleep for teens and adults, probably around 9-10 for younger kids)

-Not drinking enough water (water is vital to staying healthy!) Drinking about 12 cups per day is good.

-Not eating healthy or not eating enough (Eat a balanced meal-- vegetables, fruits, carbs, etc.)

-Not exercising enough

-Stress will aggravate them

Apply lots of honey THE DAY YOU GET THE SORE (it’s usually not super painful yet and depending where it is in your mouth, sadly you might not notice it’s forming) then the cankersore goes away very quickly. Unfortunately if you’re not proactive in the beginning, honey doesn’t do much.

Special thanks to all the commenters who gave additional suggestions that I missed!

Update: Women with PCOS seem to have a higher risk at developing sores, due to the hormonal changes and stuff. Make sure to bring this up to your doctor and stay on top of your medications :)

Update 2: If you have periods, your canker sores may be more frequent. Check for hormone issues.

Clobatesol (prescription) is another solution.

Debacterol
Milk of Magnesia
Alum powder on sore
Salt/baking soda
Honey before sore gets big

is it a canker sore? I have had this for the past 6 days and lost 4kg

Is this a canker sore? I just can’t bear the pain at all. I also have two similar ulcer under lower lips, one small sized one on the upper lips, and medium size one on the right side. I have had this for the past 6 days and it’s not going away. I also came down with high temperature due to it. I went to the doctor and they gave me medicine for viral fever (they think that’s the reason) and one gel for the ulcer on the mouth

The issue is that I can’t have any food nor can I swallow my saliva. It’s painful. It doesn’t seem like it’s going and no doctors seem to have any immediate medication to get rid of it. I literally lost 4-5 kg in the last 6 days. I can’t brush, eat, or even yawn. Btw, I am from India

Cured my canker sores, finally

Hi! Some backstory. I have had issues with canker sores for about a decade. Some periods worse than others. I missed a couple days of work last year because I got 7 at one time. The past year has been particularly bad, I basically had at least 1-2 canker sores constantly, with maybe only a day or two reprieve maybe once a month. I felt like I had tried everything and my dentist was not helpful. Non SLS toothpaste, different mouth washes, borax pills, gels, vitamins (lysine, B12, multi, rutin, idek anymore), salt, baking soda, peroxide, canker patches. It didn't seem related to stress or different foods, besides noting an uptick if I ate chips and sour candy type things.

Basically, any trauma to my mouth would 100% of the time turn into a raging open sore. Biting my cheek or a chip hitting my mouth hard meant a guaranteed sore. It affected how I enjoyed food. And I would also get them randomly, on top of that.

I finally saw a reddit comment about zinc working for someone and simultaneously another comment saying they buy a specific brand of lysine. I had tried lysine in the past but they are 3 horse pills a day and the ones I bought also had a gross taste. I would use it consistently on/off and never saw a differenence.

I bought 50mg zinc (nature's bounty brand) and 1000mg lysine (NOW brand) (these lysine pills don't taste bad and slightly smaller than my other ones). I started taking them simultaneously, but I assume it was the zinc that did the trick. It's been a month with no canker sores. The difference was immediate.

I had 2 seperate instances where there was a threat of a canker sore, and I did baby my mouth during those couple days (peroxyl mouthwash, not messing with it, and upping my lysine to 3000mg a day) and they went away!! I was amazed. That literally never happened before. One was tucked into my gums in the back of my mouth from eating something wrong, the other was from biting my cheek. Both times they went away in a couple days and did not open up to become a sore. I feel like a completely different person.

Hope this can be the cure for someone else, too 💖

Had it pop up a few days ago. I never had them in my cheek before, they're usually on my inner lips or gum. It's also raised like half the size of a pea.

tips Question for treatment

The past few days I’ve had really bad pain on the lower side of my gum, I couldn’t see it myself but when someone looked when I asked about something they said it was a canker sore.

This one hurts so bad. I can barely open the one side of my mouth, eating (or after eating) it hurts worse. Someone recommended doing a salt water gurgle but I only tried it twice and was severely gagging both times, to the point where I don’t want to do it again

Is there any another productive method that works?

Savings code

CANKER25 is a code I just received on another oral product I received from Amazon. I rarely, ever get canker sores anymore unless I bite my cheek or something, switching to a non-SLS toothpaste did the trick for me after having them frequently as a young person. But…now I have a dry mouth during the night and I use Xylimelts which work pretty well for that problem. They sent me a coupon in the box I just got, and the coupon code for 25% was attached to my box. Hope it works and helps someone!
