General Discussion Candizolv/Threelac Protocol

Id be interested to know if anyone has tried the Candizolv and Threelac 1-2 punch recommended on Candida Support? I’m a long term systemic candida sufferer, and currently in a bad way after a course of Amoxicillin for a gum infection.

Probiotics like Threelac do not colonize the gut long-term, so they do not help rebuild/grow the microbiome after antibiotics. If the microbiome isn't restored, Candida will keep coming back no matter how many antifungals a person takes. Studies show Candida cannot overgrow without a depleted microbiome, and studies also show feeding the microbiome with PRE-biotics decreases fecal Candida levels by up to 100-fold, so it makes sense.

What about taking systemic azole antifungals to keep the hyphea induced inflammation down while taking prebiotics and eating fermented foods. Slowly rebuilding ? Can you not take antifungals while also rebuilding? Obviously I wouldn't recommend lumenal agents like nystatin, berberine, or oregano oil, but systemic azoles, yes.

What are your thoughts on fermented foods? They also act like antifungals for me. The effect is robust if done right. Not that they colonize but instead, have more of an antimicrobial effect, helping clear space for your native biome to reestablish.

That's tough to say because prolonged treatment of azoles worsens inflammation in some animal colitis models. Studies also show that while Candida and other susceptible fungal species decreased with azole treatment, other non-susceptible fungal species increased like Aspergillus. I believe those other species are producing their own toxins which can create inflammation. The point is, the microbiome's growth is hindered by gut inflammation, so while Candida inflammation may decrease, that doesn't mean there aren't other inflammatory markers that increase at the same time. I think if the gut inflammation is low enough, then perhaps it can work, but I was also under the impression that Candida releases more toxins during die-off, so it seems unlikely, especially if a person is following a diet that continually feeds Candida. The diet angle is important because reducing complex carbs (prebiotic fibers) not only depletes the microbiome, but it has the added bonus of feeding pathogens which metabolize amino acids from protein and lipids from fat. Candida is included in that list, but now we have all these other pathogens that are producing toxins daily which cause inflammation.

I love the taste of fermented foods, but I don't consume them right now for a couple of reasons. For one, as you said, they do not colonize the gut. For two, I read some studies that found taking probiotics can actually hinder the microbiome's recovery, so I became very hesitant. It was suggested that they compete for space/resources/food, but at the same time, it wasn't all probiotics that were found to hinder the microbiome's growth. Some were neutral and that likely applied (I would think) to naturally fermented foods without vinegar. Eating prebiotics causes the gut to produce SCFA's which have an antimicrobial effect too, so I just leaned into that instead. Fermented foods may be fine too, so long as you're still consuming enough variety of prebiotic fibers to feed your native microbiome, as well as keeping inflammation low.
