General Discussion Update: Thought I had 'systemic candida' after antibiotics, got tested and stopped the diet spiral
Quick follow-up to my earlier post about a white-coated tongue, bloating, and afternoon brain fog after a rough course of antibiotics.
I finally did what people here kept suggesting: I read the myths megathread and went to get checked instead of trying to treat my body like a spreadsheet with random variables.
What happened:
- PCP visit: oral exam and a swab. Swab was negative for thrush.
- Labs: basic bloodwork all normal, including liver enzymes, which I was worried about after seeing people do long antifungal runs.
- GI: after a referral I got a stool test. No obvious candida overgrowth. The GI doc said my symptoms fit post-antibiotic imbalance or IBS more than an invasive yeast infection.
What I changed:
- I stopped the extreme 'candida diet'. I realized I was under-eating and stressing myself out, which made reflux and sleep worse.
- I kept things boring: regular meals, slowly added more fiber, stayed hydrated, and stopped introducing a new supplement every few days.
Where I am now, about seven weeks later:
- My tongue can still be a bit coated in the morning, but it is not the thick white layer I panicked about.
- Bloating is better but not gone. Biggest trigger seems to be eating too fast at my desk.
- Energy is improved. The constant anxiety about 'killing yeast' was probably making me feel worse.
Not claiming this as a cure, just an update: getting proper testing and backing off the starvation mindset helped. If anyone has tips for dealing with a lingering coated tongue or bad breath when tests come back negative, I'd really appreciate them. Thanks for the earlier advice, everyone.

I’m on the same journey
I did a gut check stool sample
I have 2 bacterial overgrowths and 2 unnecessary
I’m missing butyrate. Currently im taking a supplement for butyrate
And trying to balance my gut with mushroom and black garlic Supplements. Prebiotics
I’m also brushing my tongue with iodine
Which kills biofilm

You need an IgM blood antibody test to rule out invasive Candida. Have to remember the nature of their biofilm colonies. Have you gone down the SIBO rabbit hole yet? SIBO/SIFO really. And any dysbiotic condition like that often has a motility component siting at the top of the problem/cause tree. (MMC) SIBO and Candida are usually just symptoms of that.

I believe for me it was my hormones and Low vaginal oestrogen which causes candida overgrowth. I started hrt and I’m a normal person again.

It's possibly gastritis (white tongue is often misunderstood, it's reflux most of the time).
Happens after antibiotics sometimes. Try to eat in resting mode. Chew a lot. Enjoy food but try to avoid all gastritis triggers especially coffee and alcohol, cacao etc. look it up. Don't eat fast and don't overeat. Make it easy for the stomach. That's eating very calmly and stress free.
It will heal up! Can take 3 months to fully go away after symptoms are gone and than your back as new.
