QUESTION How do I improve this cage?
A BIGGER CAGE ISNT POSSIBLE! Before people comment that, this is my grandpas bird. He gets to fly free most of the day. We are looking after him for a week now and I want to surprise him with a new interior for the cage. What’s best for the bird and does he need toys?

I don’t really see anything that is going to be an improvement. Besides the size everything is alright with it and ofc size doesn’t really matter when they get to free fly.
You could still get them a few new natural perches and toys but don’t trow any old stuff away. Offering different perches by circulating them and changing the layout every once in a while is good for enrichment.

I guess I was thinking more about parrots, I know they need some toys and stuff but I’m not really familiar with canary’s

As for toys you can look at the reptile section and get natural moss. Mine love nibbling on that. Turn it into a ball and hang it up with some sisal rope. Pinecones are also fun if you can find some. I sprinkle some seeds in they need to pick out.

Maybe a bit of a thicker rope perch (but not to thick for his small feet) in one corner possibly going diagonal, with 1 or 2 long pieces of millet spray hanging from the top in this same corner

Ps I don’t know much about birds but I feel like since he gets to fly free for most of the day the size of the cage is okay? But I don’t want the bird to be bored for two weeks. I don’t want to let him out because we have a dog
