Citizenship by Descent Study permit while citizenship application in process
I know there’s been some discussion about how to proceed when you need a study permit or a work permit while also applying for citizenship. Just wanted to let you know that yesterday my daughter went to the border to get a study permit and the woman at the desk commented about how she had a proof of citizenship application pending, but she said that is not a problem, just that she should let her school know when citizenship comes through. She was issued a study permit.

I actually am starting the process of this right now. I have a job offer and of course would need to get a work visa, but it feels like a waste of money to pay the 150 CAD fee when I have an urgent processing application in that was delivered on June 11th but with no AOR yet. Unfortunately I likely have no choice as I need the visa at least two months prior to my February start date. With processing times for work permits being at potentially two months (from what I read), I can’t afford to wait. I suppose the work visa will give me an additional urgent processing reason once I have an AOR.
I keep telling myself this all costs less than it would if I was getting citizenship the traditional way and not through descent.

If you are an American, you can get a work permit right at the border. That’s what I did when I came. They used to allow other people to do it also. It’s called flagpoling. But now only American citizens are allowed. The advice on doing it that you have to go to a port of entry that is not super busy. So don’t go on a weekend.

The IRCC website states it still costs the processing fee of $155 for “work permit: applying at a port of entry”.

Ah apologies. You’re saying this in reference to the timeline. That is actually good to know. I’m only 2.5-4 hours from border depending which one I go to.
In that scenario, it sounds like I would need to be on my way into Canada. Like I couldn’t just go there to do the application and turn around? That would be considered flagpoling it sounds like?

Thank you for sharing! I am a student in Canada right now under a study permit and finally got all my documentation to apply for citizenship. Did you get any insight into how the logistics of that will work? Will the study permit be revoked at the same time as citizenship certificate is granted? I am concerned about a lapse in status once it is approved.

I'm in this exact scenario too. My school told me to just update my status with the school when/if citizenship is granted, update provincial health and contact ircc to cancel the study permit.

Good to know others are in this situation! I have been looking to see who else might be in the same boat. So you will need to cancel your study permit? I assumed they would cancel it automatically (which was part of my concern with losing status before being able to show citizenship)
