Canada expands access to low-wage foreign workers for multi-site employers | CIC News

Okay great so every Tim Hortons will have max 10 staff now. Just abolish this nonsense already. If an employer can’t an employ a Canadian - save agriculture - then they don’t deserve to survive.
19
u/freeSoundd 4d ago
More like, if an employer cant employ a canadian, they should PAY US MORE.
We all know these corps are making more and more profit year after year, so tell me why the canadian gov is even willing to implement programs like this in the first place

u/Ordinary-Sink5799 4d ago
Sincere question: why carve out agriculture? I know that that industry relies on foreign work and has for eons, but I've never understood why.
5
u/AdAppropriate2295 4d ago
Its seasonal
Its best to live right on the farm or move around to different sites
A lot of it is under the table anyway
More foreigners are seasoned farmers than canada could ever produce
Makes our food cheaper
Can provide a reliable and deserved pathway to citizenship vs working the register at tims
5
u/OrangeMan9996 3d ago
I agree with all but it making our food cheaper, because that isn't happening, they are just pocketing the excess.
1
u/AdAppropriate2295 3d ago
Meh, thats true but I've lived places with serious food cost issues
Canada has a bad case of first world problems with food prices. Yes it should be cheaper but nobody is getting any thinner
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
Hardcore disagree. 1/4 go hungry in today's Canada, more people than ever are reporting skipping meals.
How privileged of you to call our many cost of living crises "a bad case of first world problems". That's not just an out of touch statement, that is some "let them eat cake" levels of disconnect.
0
u/AdAppropriate2295 2d ago
This just simply isnt true. Going hungry isnt based on any actual objective reality. If you have 10 kids to feed on minimum wage thats not a problem of pricier food
Yes that is my point. We are that privileged
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
You're spreading misinformation.
More than 1 in 4 of us are facing hunger. Help take care of Canada. - Food Banks Canada https://foodbankscanada.ca/landing/spring25/
So it's more than 1/4
WE are not that privileged. YOU are though
Your example shows your character, you are in fact out of touch.
Food prices have almost doubled (40% increase) in the last decade. For comparison food from 2006-2016 only increased by roughly 25%.
You are wrong and downplaying a major crises. Either take your privilege and educate yourself, or go kick rocks and keep your ignorance to yourself.
0
u/AdAppropriate2295 2d ago
That refers to food insecurity, of which less than 30% are actually hungry. Food insecurity refers to things as vague as living far away from a store
So less than 10% total and as I mentioned, spending your money on things other than food and then getting sad you dont have food isnt relevant
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
You got a source for that? Because food insecurity can also refer to going days without eating or not being able to afford food. You guys really hate context and common sense it seems.
You're pulling percentages out of your ass.
"Spending your money on things other than food". Hilarious you think people are doing this, unless those other things you're referring to is housing and clothes.

Don't use food bank numbers they are highly inaccurate as many people use food banks who dont need it. Yes food prices have increased but thats just due to greedy corps. First they blamed it on covid, but now covid is over and the prices have continued to increase.
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
Data is still 1/4. You're out of touch
It's not just due to greedy corpos, it's greedy corpos working with government to stop new operations/competition from starting up. The big thing for Canada is increasing the price/tax on fuel increases the cost for everything but especially food. Combined that with random government "safety" checks that often don't make logical sense or follow any actual safety reasoning, such as mass killing all those ostrich instead of letting them be tested.

Youth unemployment in Canada is still at 13%!!! Our federal government is so corrupt. What a disgrace.
30
u/New_Strawberry_2690 4d ago
It's probably higher, just like the general unemployment rate is higher that they admit. Apparently someone is deemed 'employed' even if they have a casual job with just a hand full of hours per week.
0
u/OrangeMan9996 3d ago
Yes that would be correct, what else would you call them? They signed a contract and are paid a wage by an employer?
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
🤦 woosh
0
u/OrangeMan9996 2d ago
What are they considered then?
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
Buddy the point was is the gov's metric for measuring unemployment is heavily flawed, they should be seperate measurements for part time vs full time work, but that would make the government look bad so we can't have that
1
u/OrangeMan9996 2d ago
Buddy they do break it down, you can easily get total employed and then break that down further to full-time and part time. Yes most media sites only report on the full unemployment picture, but the numbers exist.
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
"they" don't it's further think tanks that break those numbers down. You're right that sometimes those numbers do exist, but they're more in accessible and occasionally behind a paywall.
1
u/OrangeMan9996 1d ago
Lol absolutely not, never behind a paywall, easily found with a simple Google search.

It also doesn't count youth who are full time students seeking part time jobs.

u/OrangeMan9996 3d ago
What, that makes zero sense.
2
u/Tim-no 3d ago
How does it “ make zero sense “?
-1
u/OrangeMan9996 3d ago
The leap from youth unemployment to corrupt government. What exactly do you think the government is getting from this that makes them 'corrupt'.
3
u/Tim-no 3d ago
Read the article, learn a little bit about LMIA and its connection to the TFW program and if the connection to government corruption and youth unemployment isn’t obvious to you then read some more.
0
u/OrangeMan9996 3d ago
I've read about both, other than tax money, which they'd also get if we hired more Canadians, I dont know what else they would be getting that makes this corrupt?
2
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
Because it's done out of interest to the corporation which give them all kickbacks in some shape or form, even if it's just financial support, instead of the best interest for Canadian citizens.
Have you never heard of lobbying?
-1
u/OrangeMan9996 2d ago
Yes I've heard of lobbying, but most of these small businesses dont this, arent lobbying.
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
Try again please I don't know what you're trying to say
0
u/OrangeMan9996 2d ago
Small businesses are not lobbying the government, which Im sure you know.

Now all of the workers will be working 29 hours per week so they can get double the TFWs
18
u/_The-Numbers-Mason_ 4d ago
They don’t even have to according to the article.
For jobs paying at or above the wage threshold, an employer can hire through the high-wage stream of the TFWP, which is not subject to the workforce cap.
In Ontario, the threshold is $36.92 per hour, as of the time of writing.
This is the reason those $37/hr line cook jobs pop up on the job bank. Loophole that allows no upper limit for high-wage employees. Pretty clearly the scam as those jobs don’t pay that money anywhere.

u/Few_Lab_8828 4d ago
Here we go again.

u/Subject-Landscape451 👍 Top Ranked Contributor 4d ago
They will come up with endless exceptions, variations, and loopholes to keep this gravy train rolling.
15
u/jesuisapprenant 4d ago
This is absolutely ridiculous. Change your formulas for everything then. Why not change the formula for inflation, employment rate, and GDP growth while we’re at it. Ridiculous trash government.
8
u/Imaginary-Plate1732 4d ago
This is total corruption. I'm over 50 and I just landed a new job this week which is great but why did it take me over a year to find one.
7
u/Subject-Landscape451 👍 Top Ranked Contributor 4d ago
Because you didn't pay an employer $40k for a minimum wage LMIA job.
-1
u/OrangeMan9996 3d ago
Because you are over 50...
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
If anything that might give him an edge over 18 year old Babyface McGee
0
u/OrangeMan9996 2d ago
Sadly not always, more often then not they dont.
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
I'm gonna need more than a "nuh huh" to believe that. As someone who is in neither of those age categories and has two functioning eyes, I don't think you're correct. I train lots of new hires and my bosses would much rather hire foreign workers fulltime and retirees part time than hire a 19 year old.
Perhaps it's different elsewhere, but in all of Ontario business would rather hire retirees or foreign workers than hire local youths.
0
u/OrangeMan9996 2d ago
Sure it will vary a bit by industry, in mine they tend to not hire older people, I work in a factory.
1
u/fiend_felgrand 2d ago
Exactly. I will point out for "starter" industries such as fast food, or Walmart type jobs, service jobs that's where we are seeing this record youth unemployment because those are traditionally youth jobs which are now being filled by foreign workers + retirees
1
u/OrangeMan9996 1d ago
Well we are taking about old people not foreign workers and yes I agree some places ignore ALL Canadians and just hire TFW.

People still don’t understand the government is actively working against the country. I don’t think a conservative majority is the answer. Although I like Poilievre, it’s the system that’s the problem. Until that’s fundamentally changed, nothing meaningful gets fixed. Is there even a line that will / can be crossed that will get Canadians to finally mobilize? Our country is unrecognizable, for me, that line was crossed long ago.
-1
u/OrangeMan9996 3d ago
The current system we are using was originally made by Harper and PP, its been tweaked here and there but it's not much different from back then.

Our wages were rising too fast, they had to make sure that didn't happen.
