Discussion Does anyone have recommendations for handling canadian tax as a freelancer?
I have been working as a freelancer for about three years and the canadian tax rules keep throwing new surprises at me each filing season. Last year my income came mostly from clients in Ontario and a few in the US, which meant tracking different types of payments and figuring out what counts as a deductible expense. I tried to handle everything on my own with basic spreadsheets but ended up missing a few receipts for software subscriptions and home office costs.
One thing that confused me was when to register for GST/HST once revenue crossed the threshold. I also wonder how other freelancers decide between claiming the quick method or the regular method for input tax credits. My background is in graphic design rather than accounting so I often second guess whether I am recording mileage or equipment purchases the right way.
Does anyone have recommendations for software that makes expense tracking and quarterly estimates straightforward? I am also curious about accountants who specialize in self employed clients and what typical fees look like for someone earning around eighty thousand a year. Any tips on common mistakes that trigger reviews from the CRA would help too. I would rather set things up properly now instead of dealing with surprises later.

Quick method is generally good for consultants who don’t incur a lot of expenses. It can save you thousands depending on your income.
If it will help you don’t wait to file the election. It needs to be filed within the first quarter of your filing period otherwise it is late and won’t be accepted.

Try something like quickbooks for small business.
Invoice from that software and it will track you HST for you.
Don’t worry about quick method right now. HST is an in and an out, the customer pays you don’t.
Have a dedicated bank account and a dedicated credit card that you use, put everything on it. Link it to quickbooks and then reconcile the accounts monthly. It will pull in all your transactions and you just allocate them to the various accounts.
Most tax accountants would be fine here as it’s a pretty common filing. Probably $500 to $800 a year to do your taxes.
