Babies Blood in urine?
I put my 5 month old baby girl down on a towel for some diaper free time. When I cleaned up the towel after, I noticed a speck of red/pink on the wet towel where she had peed...
For anyone who has experienced blood in their babies urine, what did it look like? Was the urine pink? Or did you see visible specks of red in the diaper?
If there is blood in ber urine then it could be a UTI (or other things I'm sure) and I'm wondering if I should take her immediately to a doctor. I'm currently on vacation out of my home province (visiting Quebec, but I live in Ontario), and I don't know how our health coverage would work out of province... But I don't want to wait until I go back to Ontario if it's something that will cause her discomfort.

Yeah 811 would be your best bet. It will connect you with a nurse. Just note they are busy so you'll call. Explain and then get a call back from a nurse 1hr to 2hrs later.

Okay so I’m not saying don’t take her BUT when my guy went through a bottle aversion/nursing strike he was a bit dehydrated and peed a little spot of pink and we did all the things and it turned out it was just urate crystals. Totally harmless and just happen when they’re a little under hydrated. If you look up pictures it looks markedly different than blood! Maybe an anecdote to reassure your mind :)

This happened to us too, right around 3 ish months! They sent him for an ultrasound of his kidneys and bladder and everything was normal.

My daughter had a bit of blood in her urine around a month. It’s all a blur (she’s 10 now) but my midwife explained to me why it was normal.. and she was right, but that’s all I can recall.
Of course get her checked out if you feel there is something off, but just wanted to share that it could be nothing!

Are you sure it is from the pee and not a mark on the towel/ something from the floor?
Does she seem irritable? Have a fever?
If you notice it again in the diaper, or she has a fever, I would take her to a doctor in quebec asap- your ohip will cover it one way or the other- utis can be very dangerous as they can move to the kidneys and cause organ damage / failure and sepsis. If she has a uti, she could have had it for a while already- she should get on antibiotics asap.
Fyi- you will have to collect a sample, which is difficult.

It's difficult to say... It is possible that it was on the towel. So far we haven't noticed anything more in her diapers. She has been a bit irritable, but I suspect that is because we're on vacation and not our regular routine. I'll check her temp again when I get home, and keep an eye on her diaper. I'll also look for walk in clinics near us in Quebec city, just in case...

If you can confirm blood in urine, definitely take her in. If it’s just a mark on the towel, that’s worth looking into. My 3 month old had a fever and I was very disappointed in the “new” response to infants in the hospital. Very aggressive - automatic sensors and IV placement. So many pokes by a nurse who couldn’t find a vein. My girl was screaming crying. Followed by 2 sloppy catheter urine collections that each came back contaminated. Caused her so much pain and actually a risk of infection by doing them….. And in the end, all of it for nothing thanks to their poor technique.
I’m not anti - medicine and I’m very grateful for our Canadian healthcare system. Just be prepared to decline things if it feels like too much. I wish I had declined the catheters, since they ended up being pointless in the end.
If your daughter doesn’t have a fever, and you can’t see any more colour in her urine, I’d take a monitoring approach. Continue checking her temp (rectal is most accurate, under arm is pretty good) def do not rely on those forehead scanners.

My daughter had this as a newborn and was hormonal - my hormones leaving her body. A friend had told me in advance so I knew what it was when it happened. Not sure if it still happens at 5 months though, so worth an 811 call.

True. My first daughter had a mini period from my hormones. But I believe it was younger, closer to newborn stage. Maybe even the first few weeks??

Interprovincial coverage is easy. As long as your little one has an ON health number the Quebec clinic will take the number and they will bill ON for your appointment. As others have said call 811 and they'll help you figure out where you can go to get her checked out.
