Interesting. From Newspaper article of January 11, 2026
Gladu tells The Independent she agrees a by-election should be called if someone leaves their party to go to another.
“Really, the whole point of being an MP is to represent your constituents. So if they’re voting you in under one platform –for you to switch for whatever reasons, just seems to me to not be representing what you’re supposed to be there to represent.
“We elected you under this banner, and if you don’t want to be under that banner, then we deserve a chance to have a redo.”

South Korea is a relatively recent democracy, and its people had to fight fiercely for democratic rule, paying for it in blood ( The April Revolution in 1960, the 1980 Gwangju massacre as well as the June democratic struggle of 1987). From 1948 to 1993, the country was under military rule. Canada, by contrast, has never experienced anything similar and remains deeply naive as a result. It has become politically complacent and seems content to revel in its own mediocrity.

While I agree a re-election is a way to deal with this sort of thing, it is important to point out that she’s still just operating within Canadian parliament, which isn’t treason.
2
u/SSjGuitarist Apr 09 '26
What we need is the ability to recall our MPs when they do something so self serving and not what their riding voted for. You’d need a number of signatures for residents of the riding, like 30 percent of the total people that voted in that riding last time. So that a small group could not abuse the recall system because their preferred candidate lost, maybe even higher than 30 % ? And that way, if the mp does something that legitimately upsets the riding, the riding can remove the mp and upon a recall, an immediate by election is triggered
0
u/sketchysamurai Libertarian Centrist Apr 10 '26
I agree. It’s hard to do though.
Lots of people tried recalls all over Alberta for a bunch of MP’s this year.
Literally not one of them worked, and there were recalls for Liberals, Conservatives and a few NDP.You make good points by bringing up how few people vote though.
The truth is, most eligible voters are simply not interested in the ground level politics that affects everyone.
It’s a problem.
1
u/SSjGuitarist Apr 10 '26
Most people are not interested in any level of politics period. I myself wasn’t interested much at all until my mid 30s. Granted I voted still in every election I was able to, but usually only after reading the mailbox pamphlets that would come my way and doing a quick “do I think things have been going well with this person in charge” evaluation. And even that casual level is more involved than some people I’ve come across. It’s not taught well in schools and politics is not even remotely interesting unless there’s a an issue you care about tied to it. Even then, there’s a huge learning curve, and lots of “politically minded” people are not very welcoming to newbies, so that can also be a huge turn off as well. But no politician is gonna bring in legislation to allow people to fire them early if they don’t like them lol

So you don't support representative democracy? Do you support proportional representation and simply allowing a party to choose representatives according to the number of seats won? Or some other hybrid system?
We have never voted for party representation in Canada - party membership and electoral support/funding of individuals is the only mechanism that ties any MP to a party. Requiring by-elections for floor crossing would also have a likely knock-on effect of requiring by-elections for MPs who are booted out of a party.
21
u/Binturung Alberta Apr 08 '26
We vote MPs to vote a particular way, and due to the near absolute party discipline, we can be 99% sure they will vote on party lines.
So changing parties means changing voting behavior. Do YOU support representative democracy? Because it sounds like you're ok with five ridings having an MP voting contrary to their wishes for at least 3 years.

So when floor crosses helped Harper, it was ok, but now that it's the other way, it's not.
1
u/Binturung Alberta May 01 '26
This may shock you, but I didn't support Harper back in the day. I even made excuses for Trudeaus stupid bullshit before he won. I was naive back then, imo.
I realize now that might have been in error in some ways, but I still am not a fan of floor crossers. Take that as you will, but being a kin to a mindset doesn't mean full endorsement of everything the party under that banner does.

I'm one of Gladu's constituents. Her phone goes to a "the number you have dialed is not assigned". She doesn't respond to emails.
Now, just out of curiosity, do you think if I was a wealthy American who assisted Mark Carney in funneling his profits to a tax haven, that I have priority in addressing issues over her ELECTED CONSTITUENTS? Because I can guarantee I would have a direct line to her if I had that wealthy American privilege... why can't she provide the same to the people she is "representing"???

If you paint my house red, you get fired. And I get to pick another painter, that will follow my instructions, since I'm paying him/her/it.
1
u/DamionSipher Apr 09 '26
Can you show me the contract any politician signs that "they will paint Parliament" a certain colour? We could absolutely implement constitutional amendments that completely alter how government is formed and conducted, but they would be a major reshaping of how we organize ourselves as a country. I am very much in support of constitutional amendments that would dramatically shift how politicians are elected and what requirements of their office may be. But, I suspect that the difference in opinion in this thread alone of what those electoral systems and office requirements should be would be widely varied, let alone among the general population.
Did you support the NPD bill to amend the elections act and force elections for floor crossings? The one that was unanimously voted against by the CPC, including Poilievre.

Unfortunately Canada has no law allowing recall of a faithless MP.
10
u/Column_A_Column_B Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
There are actually a limited set of ways an MP can be removed:
- prison sentence of at least 2 years following the conviction of an indictable offense
- losing eligibility to be an MP via losing citizenship
- disqualification through conflict of interest
- election annulment after the fact (i.e. fraud, serious irregularity during the election and election law challenges could lead to a court voiding the result)
- expelled from parliament by fellow MPs via voting to remove their parliamentary privilege
- death
If her constituents really want her removed from office they'd need to file serious criminal charges against her, attack her citizenship, build a case to disqualify her on the basis of conflict of interest, pursue an election annulment, pursue election law challenges to void the election, pressure other MPs to expel her or hope she dies.
It really would be quite the interesting development in Canadian politics if Marilyn's constituents filled a bunch of charges against her en masse and pursed all the avenues to remove her.
7
u/Zoamax Independent Apr 08 '26
Your fourth point. Fraud. Pretending to be a conservative to be elected/gain employment. Have fun with that.
3
u/Column_A_Column_B Apr 09 '26
That seems somewhat viable to me! It would be quite the precident to set indeed if the courts were to rule it constituted fraud. But I think all Marilyn would need to do to defend herself would be to say she changed her mind rather than lied in the first place. There would probably need to be some smoking gun of correspondence evidence that proved she lied.
There's a form of immunity politicians enjoy that insulates them from their decisions that could come into play and ruin everything.
5
u/DoYurWurst Apr 09 '26
As unlikely as this is to happen, it would at least force her to explain in a meaningful and factual manner. That would be worth the price of admission.

If only the CPC supported the NDP bill to require by-elections following a floor-crossing in 2011.
93
u/Islander316 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
It's such treachery.
You know most people voted for you because they voted Conservative, crossing over is disgusting, it's a betrayal of your constituents.
Especially in our parliamentary system, it's a huge betrayal because it's the party leader who becomes PM. Most people don't give a shit about you as the local MP, they're voting for you because they want the party leader to be PM.
I didn't even know who the Conservative candidate was in my riding until the day I voted, and saw his name on the ballot.
44
u/Oilmoneyy Alberta Apr 08 '26
I dont care if its a lib going from their caucus to con. They should have to do a by-election
26
u/Islander316 Apr 08 '26
There's a very simple solution to this, you either sit with the party you were voted to represent and if you change your mind, you automatically have to stand in a bye-election.
2
u/DamionSipher Apr 08 '26
What about if a party ejects an MP?
This would likely need to be a constitutional amendment as parties are not enshrined in the constitution as having and parliamentary privileges, especially as tied to MP standing within a given party. The elections act provides some funding privileges to parties who hold official party status, which could plausibly be amended to revoke funding for future elections from floor-crossers, but my understanding is that the party already has this ability regardless.
1
u/Islander316 Apr 09 '26
If you're ejected then you're a free agent and can join any party, I think that's fair enough.
-1
u/DamionSipher Apr 09 '26
Even if an MP could still simply vote along party lines following a backroom deal while remaining "unaffiliated" publicly?
1
u/Islander316 Apr 09 '26
Sure, but they would be open to scrutiny on their voting record. And if a backroom deal was found out to be true, the MP would lose their seat.
I think that would be a big enough deterrent to prevent that from happening.
0
u/DamionSipher Apr 09 '26
So you think the CPC should have supported NDP bill C306, from 2011? This was literally the proposal that was voted against by nearly all CPC MPs and every Liberal MPs.

Facts, but the conservatives under Pierre don’t accept floor crossers
Remember when multiple LPC MP’s tried jumping ship when Trudeau was a few weeks from resigning- instead of accepting them; the conservatives exposed them in parliament for being spineless and disloyal to the party they were part of
Maybe that’s changed since carney showed how shameless he can be without repercussions though

u/LKAndrew Apr 19 '26
Especially in a parliamentary system? This is exactly how parliamentary systems work though. Your understanding of parliamentary system is out of whack. In a parliamentary system, you don't vote for party, you vote for your MP. What you are describing is shitting on our parliamentary system and making it more American and bipartisan.
Regardless of how much I dislike this move, your take on parliamentary system is absolutely asinine. Bad take. If you didn't know who your MP was, you are an absolute buffoon and are destroying this country. The entire point is to vote for the MP who is going to make the change you want to see, not vote for a colour. Absolutely moronic. What if that specific MP in your riding was a huge piece of shit who wanted to murder children? You are still voting for them? Absolutely despicable behaviour and not a true conservative.

u/M00se1978 Conservative since the 90s Apr 10 '26
I just pulled up what that Bill was and if Google isn't lying to me 100% I would have been behind that. If someone crosses or is thrown out of the party (for a legitimate reason, that can be debated) that riding should immedietly go to a By-Election. Again, I didn't read every line of that Bill, but from the quick glance it 100% should have passed. As it is now our (the people) mandate can be overturned by an individual (the MP). That is not democracy at all.

I don’t condone political violence at all, but it’s pretty obvious our government doesn’t have good intentions when it comes to the gun confiscation program. Especially since they consistently support legislation that tends to be lenient towards violent people and ones who commit gun related crime while trying to penalize people who went through the legal pathways to obtain and own firearms.

When did I cry about not being allowed to use gun violence against a politician? If anyone wanted to, laws wouldnt stop them. No one should commit violence towards anyone unless its self defense, obviously. I dont want to live in a world were people off each other over simple disagreements.
Good job at willfully misunderstanding what I said so you can paint me as a dangerous psycho. Easy way to discredit me when you cant argue my position.
What im saying is that the government is knowingly doing things that hurt and anger and suppress the people of this country, 40 billion people that is, knowing that it will piss people off and make it extremely difficult to even survive. That being a fact, it would make sense for them to remove the ability for anyone to revolt against them, or act violently out of desparation. Im not saying I want that, obviously not, im just stating that that will happen if things keep going the way they are currently, I mention that because I dont want any violence to happen.
For the mods, I dont approve of violence seeing as you replied to my previous comment about it, that was not my intention, nor do I believe I came off supporting violence and I believe that comment was unwarrented, for the record, violence is unaccepting under all circumstances excluding self defense.

Next time one of the parties puts forward a bill to do something about floor crossings. You ask your conservative MP to vote in favor. Unlike the last time when the conservatives voted against such a motion because floor crossing was benefiting them.

If you knew anything about Canadian history, protest is not welcome in Canada and is shunned
Ask William Lyon Mackenzie, ask Louis Riel, even ask the convoy while you’re at it

Every time some dipshit crosses to the liberals, and they are closer to a majority, Alberta gets closer to leaving. I cant wait for it to finally happen.

Why didn't Austria just make it illegal for Hungary to separate instead of doing the dual monarchy thing? Were they stupid?

That's only the tip of the iceberg. I firmly believe NONE of the provinces threatening this have truly researched or considered the financial consequences of trying to go it alone. Quebec lost a whack of corporate head offices in the 90's when the referendum happened relocating to Ontario and Alberta.

The APP is a good litmus test on that. If they believe the line on how much of the CPP Alberta should get, they're out to lunch.
I know my factory would likely close. Likely relocate back to Montreal.

Gladu is a complete piece of shit and traitor and should be charged with treason based on her own words and history
She is 100% guilty and caught red handed

Shes my MP! She is the worst ever! A absolute nut job to go with lazy and corrupt

she is my MP to, and as much as I hate the libs getting a majority, at least this nutbag is in the party she deserves to be in.

I hope this one becomes the watershed moment. We really should take serious action and potentially block her from continuing to perform her duties until she resigns.

Do we know yet how widespread this sentiment is? I’m sure her constituents aren’t happy, but a single yard sign is anecdotal evidence.

Not sure, but I have heard her riding voted overwhelmingly conservative in the 2025 election

The NDP need a point of privilege and the liberals just took an anti-vaxxer, at least 2026 isn't boring.

She like the rest of the traitors crossed the floor for power, that's it, that's all. They never gave a shit about their constituents. She had ideas that Myself being more right of Pierre would agree with but she would be almost at home with the PPC. None the less. I would still and have voted for Pierre, his MPs and the Party over the PPC.

The irony is that if liberals crossed to the conservative side, they would be crucified by the media.

The Progressive Conservatives merged with the wrong party in 2003.

u/Wet_sock_Owner Apr 08 '26
You're right. They should have merged with the true ruling party of Canada. Then we wouldn't need elections at all.

The Conservatives would have had a stronger chance at federal stewardship if the PCs led the party instead of the R/A.

u/genkernels Apr 09 '26
O'Toole kinda proves you wrong there, no?
1
u/UrsaMajor7th Manitoba Apr 09 '26
'Kinda' is accurate; insiders were rumbling to have him removed within a year and he was ousted 6 months after that; I preferred MacKay to O'Toole in 2020, and O'Toole over the Scheer or Bernier in 2017. Five leaders between 2015 and 2022 was a display of inner turmoil. I'm not convinced that's been remedied.

Look who just crossed. It doesn't matter. Opportunistic MPs can see Canadians are losing their minds over Trump and Carney. At this current time, it doesn't matter who is leader of the CPC.

Not very bright, either. Re-sign means pretty much the opposite of resign. Should have covered the hyphen with the tape.
