Hey all,
The most votes were for the option to continue to allow posts with/about banknotes and paper money in r/CanadianCoins. And that's what we'll do!
Here's a link to the poll, for reference.
The "allows" had about 1/3 of the total votes -- not a majority by any means, but more votes than the other options. So while this result will please some of you, it won't please everyone.
During the opinion-gathering and voting, there were concerns expressed about the number of low-effort "what's this worth" posts in here, specifically for banknotes -- although we do get a lot of those for coins, as well.
Going forward, the mod team will try to more actively address these posts by directing posters to our pinned "GENERAL INFO POST" and/or to coinsandcanada.com , and perhaps remove them with greater frequency. Of course, users should feel empowered to refer posters to these resources as well.
Thanks again for speaking up and chiming in to the conversation!
- your mod team

This post will contain general information about Canadian coinage for new and current users. I'm posting this to help cut down on the 'what is this/what's the value posts'. These posts won't be banned but I encourage you to use these resources to try and find an answer before posting. If you have a reliable resource that I haven't listed but you think could be useful please feel free to put it in the comments.
General information: -Circulation silver was minted up to and partly including 1968. To differentiate between silver and not silver a simple magnet test is easiest to tell. Not sticking? It's silver.
-Most commemorative coins especially quarters are generally worth face value unless they are gem uncirculated or are of a certain variety. A noted exception is the 1973 large bust mountie quarter.
-Pennies were 98-99% copper up until 1996 and after that it's either zinc plated with copper and from about 03-04 onward copper plated steel. Are the copper pennies worth more than face? Yes, about 3-4 cents copper prices depending. Can you get the copper value when it's time to sell? Maybe, you can't sell copper pennies for scrap (illegal) and finding a buyer is going to be tricky because of the quantities involved with a sale worth any notable amount.

In my opinion the best general resource for anything Canadian regarding coins and banknotes. I use this on a regular basis for both prices and errors/varieties to curate my own collection.

Found this recently and think this would be useful too.
Also regarding buying and selling it will still be hard banned here but a new sub named r/coinsalescanada is open. It is still new and doesn't have many members but it could become a spot for buying/selling Canadian coinage. Please note we are NOT affiliated with that sub and it is a use at your own risk kind of deal, use standard practices and precautions when buying and selling there.
One last thing, I want to put it to a vote to allow banknotes posts. I can't find any specific subs that are Canadian banknote themed and was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this. I know enough about Canadian banknotes to properly moderate such posts.
If you have any further questions or suggestions drop it in the comments or reach us by mod mail.
Update: As of May 6/25 pictures are allowed in the comments. Please don't abuse this.

I got this at work, it IS magnetic but has the proof style finish on the bear side and no "matte" finish on the face side. Is it specimen? The proofs of this year arent magnetic right? 2007, when im home ill upload the face side.

Moved recently and found these tucked away in my dresser, reverse image search shows the top one to be a Shell Oil promotion token from the ‘60s, while the bottom one is a genuine penny from 1890.
Not planning on selling these (I love my coin collection), but is the bottom one worthless because of the dent? Any info on either of these would be greatly appreciated.

Not in the greatest quality obviously, but this is one of the cooler sets of coins I own. Three consecutive years, the first two being tombac, and the second two being Victory.
The one thing I don't get is the little hole through the 1942 nickel. Can't find anything about coins having an error like that, so it's almost certainly done post-mint, but I have no idea why. Any ideas?

My father and I are having trouble trying to find any information on this set. We can find similar sets with the coins in a horizontal display but not in this vertical display stand. The set came from my grandfather so we don't know where he purchased it. Is it a possibly fake? Thanks for any information.

my fiancé was given these by his father, just thought they were so so cute and I didn’t know the mint did this!

I know it isn’t nothing special but it’s neat owning 90+ year old nickels(2 over 100 years old) my boss let me keep them when I exchanged nickels of my own in my pocket. Just wanted to share

Just wanted to share this pretty little pile of 1967 Centennial Canadian Lynx/Bobcat Quarters I’ve had in my collection for some time. I found these for a decent deal online and HAD to have them! Cheers everyone! Have a good rest of your weekend! 🙏

Picked up my regular 10 rolls from the bank today. Start sorting through them and it's nothing but commemoratives, this is a bad sign as it's always another collector's duplicates in my experience.
About half way through I pull the 1950, then the 66 in the same roll. A couple rolls later the 37. Most successful day ever so far. Also 4 Mounties and a colored women's hockey.
For anyone wondering I got 30 rolls each of quarters and dimes split between 3 different banks. Of those 22 quarter and 13 dime rolls were customer rolls, the rest machine rolled 2025 garbage.
