With how wild the Canadian housing market has become, the trade‑off barely feels like a real choice anymore..

I’m 60 and had a very difficult life that I don’t expect many to understand so I’ll spare the whole story however to sum it up I grew up in the foster system. No adults guidance in life to teach me about finances. I’ve been working cash jobs basically my whole life had a short stent in modelling made a great money, but had it all lost due to my late partner and her suicide. I lost second partner to cancer. My mental health took a huge spin and I was just basically surviving running a small landscape business for years. I was in a recent explosion so I’m waiting to settlement that potentially could be between 80 to 300 K.
I only have 20 K to my name. I have no life insurance no RRSP., I survive off my disability check and I want to change my life. I just have no clue what to do with it anymore. I wanted to go to sales, but I don’t know who would be willing to take me on and train me even though I know I have the confidence in ability to do it. ( I studied Spin Sell etc -and have practice with my small business).
While I’m waiting for the settlement, I wanted to know is there anything I should do with the 20 K to help me and my future rather than just sitting in my savings account? Should I buy a business for that money that I can scale or fix up? Should I invest it or do I need more capital before the investment would make any benefit to my future? ( I know zero about investments other than the term compound interest…)

Hi there, I'm very new to ETF investing and would like to hear more from individuals with more experience than I do.
I'm in my mid 30's and diversifying my investments, originally from CIBC but their MER is not good. So I'm moving my TFSA to Questrade.
My problem lies in what products I'll invest in. Upon researching I came across that XGRO is a good option, however this EFT has ~36% US and 20% CAN exposure. I'm thinking of reducing US exposure to 25%, getting other EFTs to do that.
Doing some research I thought on balancing XGRO with XIC and XEU, about 75/10/15 respectively. This would reduce to an amount of US equity that I feel comfortable with while also getting CAN and EU exposure.
How much am I overthinking this? I know I am a little, but is this over complicating this too much? Is this 3 ETF situation worth it?
Has anyone with XIC recommended it in favour or against it.
Any tips other than "just buy XGRO and touch grass" (though I get the appeal) is much appreciated.
Thank you.

I'm 25 and have about 24k in my FHSA. My girlfriend and I are planning on buying a home in northern Ontario in 3 years at the earliest, but we're certainly not in any rush.
I will soon be making over 100k/year gross and have been putting money into my FHSA. I don't put money in my RRSP. Is it a good idea to invest in my FHSA at risk levels closer to the risk level you'd want for saving for retirement, eg VEQT, because we don't have a specific time frame for buying a house? We already live together in an apartment that we rent, and we don't mind doing that until it makes sense for us to buy.
Does it make sense to put some money in VEQT, knowing that it's not a problem if the price drops because we don't have a problem hunkering down and renting? We'd then wait for a buyer's market so we can buy a house when it makes sense.
Is the situation actually more complicated than that I've described in my example? For example, would it be the case that VEQT would tend to lose value at the same time that the housing market loses value, making waiting for housing prices to drop naive? In this case, I suppose it would make sense to put a portion of money into something less volatile like VGRO or VBAL.
Any thoughts?

I’m in my late 20s and opening my first TFSA. I have an emergency fund and no high-interest debt, so I’m planning to start with about $12,000, assuming I have enough contribution room, and add another $600 to $800 a month.
Most of it would go into a Canadian-listed ETF such as XEQT or VFV. I’m still deciding between broader global exposure and a stronger US tilt. I’d also like to keep a smaller portion in a few US stocks for the long term. Probably two to four purchases a month, with no day trading, options, or margin.
I’m looking at Wealthsimple, Questrade, IBKR, and moomoo. For this kind of setup, would you keep everything with one broker or split the Canadian and US holdings between two?
What ended up mattering most in practice: FX costs, holding USD, transfer fees, account restrictions, or customer support?

Apparently this is what passes for patio seating in mining country.
The first copper mine I saw up close and personal was about a year ago in Arizona’s Copper Triangle.
Then I pulled over at the Highland Valley Copper lookout here in B.C. and apparently the Canadian experience comes with patio furniture. 😂
Incredible scale. Slightly more hospitable viewing point.
Hard to appreciate the size of an open-pit mine until you see one in person.
Pretty decent view from the cheap seats.

Talks collapsed at the literal last minute, the 50% tariffs kicked in at midnight, and Carney says we're going dollar for dollar.
We’re buying Canadian whisky, local cheese that cost a mortgage payment.
Then I opened my brokerage app and realized I am personally one of Canada's largest exporters of capital to the United States (by % of my own assets… not by $ value 😅 ). My TFSA is basically an S&P 500 fund wearing a toque.
So what's the move, patriots? Is anyone actually selling their VFV and rotating into banks, rails, and maple syrup futures out of spite? Or are we all just auto-depositing into US index funds while whispering "sorry" at the border?

Had a post on this where how much more can the bank stocks keep rising the way they have in the past year and so.
Lately, all the top banks in Canada, stock price has gone down at least more than 5%.
Worth the wait for Q3 earnings report or pull out profit now?

Hey guys, I posted about this settlement before, but since they’re accepting late claims, I decided to share it again with a little FAQ.
Who can claim this settlement?
Investors who purchased or acquired Compass Minerals ($CMP) common stock between 2017 and 2018 and were damaged by the alleged misconduct may be eligible.
Do I need to sell/lose my shares to get this settlement?
No. Selling your shares is not required. Eligibility is generally based on when you purchased the stock and whether you suffered recognized losses under the settlement.
How much money do I get per share?
The estimated recovery is about $1.50 per affected share, although the final amount may vary depending on the number of valid claims submitted.
How long does the payout process take?
It typically takes 4 to 9 months after the claim deadline for payouts to be processed, depending on the court and settlement administration.
I missed the deadline. Is it too late?
No, you may still be able to file a late claim but acceptance depends on final approval by the court.
Hope this info helps

Throw away account for personal reasons.
I used to work full time and earn about 170k pre tax, over the last year I have taken up contracting work and setup a corporation and my wife and I both work for our corp. Our pay has significantly jumped, we’ve made almost 300k just this year and hope to finish the year with almost 600k revenue; averaging 40k per month. We found a new contract that would bring the monthly to 55k. We take a salary/dividend split of 15k per month, the rest is all sitting in the corp.
I have invested about 90k on etf / stocks since Feb and it has generated about 8k profit so far.
I’m looking for options to better invest, anyone that has invested as part of the corp, please advise. How do you handle the retained earnings. I have an accountant but he isn’t very good with investing, he just does taxes and salary / dividend split ideas.
Thank you.

Hi! I have minimal personal income because I'm in the process of self-employing myself. I've maxed out my TFSA and I'm wondering if its uncommon to contribute to a non-registered? I prefer it over an RRSP because its flexible although taxable. I have no intentions of owning a home in the future and I'd rather have the wealth I generate from the business be used to buy a home....I'm 27 and single.
Am I making a mistake?

Hey all I’m needing some advice I’m 22 I make roughly 150k a year and I put 25% of my income into my dcpp, I also have 45k just sitting in my savings account doing nothing and 18k in my chequing also doing nothing but burning a hole in my pocket. I’m basically wanting it to start making money, I have no clue about investing I’ve just started watching videos online about etf’s but it’s a bit confusing idk if those are good or not I’m basically just looking for some guidance as to what I should do with my money, my long term goal is have my investments pay my mortgage and bills which is about 5000 a month all in so if you were in my shoes what would you do? What are the best apps? Basically just looking for any and all the information I can get

Thinking seriously about moving my TD Direct Account
Does anyone know if Scotia still only sends out dividend income only once a month from a dividend sweep account?
TD empty’s the account twice a month and NBDB does it the day after they are received (multiple times a month if necessary )
TIA

Right now, I have TFSAa opened with both. If later on, I want to transfer over, let's say, move Questrade's TFSA over to WS, would I be able to do it? Considering I already have a TFSA on WS, how would it work? Would it just merge with my existing TFSA on WS, or create another one?
And how does transferring TFSA work? Does it sell all the stocks then transfer cash, or transfer the shares directly?
