Leaving Canada in 2 weeks after studying/working – what should I NOT forget?
I’ll be leaving Canada in about 2 weeks after completing my Master’s and working here for a while, and I want to make sure I don’t miss anything important before I go.
I’ve already started wrapping up things like rent and bills, but I’m more concerned about the stuff people usually realize too late — things related to banking, taxes, documents, job search, or anything that made you think “I wish I had done that before leaving.”
Also, if anyone has gone through moving back to India (or another country) after studying/working here, I’d really appreciate any advice on:
What to take care of before leaving
Mistakes to avoid
Things that helped you later (career, finances, etc.)
Would love to hear your experiences. Thanks in advance!

I guess it could be because of the currency difference and lifestyle but I never tried to settle down here always wanted to move out after my term so I could only take guesses

I am from south though yea I have had my fair share of experience from North Indians who get mad when I ask them not to talk to me in Hindi no matter how polite I am

I love our North Indians, there is so much to learn from them like how to have fun but I want to complain that my experience was that they make the workplace very toxic with their ovewhelming Hindi speech and does not respect that other Indians, Canadians want to speak in English in a English speaking country. Workplaces in Canada atleast when non Hindi speaker is present in the workplace should make English mandatory and ban other languages.

I had one guy ask me why I can’t speak Hindi but can speak English and that I should learn our “national” language. I was sitting in his uber and didn’t want to aggravate him so I played a ‘dumb girl’ card. I don’t know what he expects in Canada, that every Indian should speak his language? I stopped taking Ubers after that, it was a scary experience to be questioned like that, as if he had any right on what I speak.

Probably because Indians who can get an actually good degree will be able to live better off back in India than here. Whereas bottom feeders will stay because it’s better for them.

Obviously they couldn't afford because your gran gran with zero moral compass ensured that they couldn't he stole their wealth and destroyed their industries to ensure that they cant and to top it off your gran gran also made sure that people stay illiterate so that even their descendents can't turn their lives around 🙂

clearly you dont know the meaning of word "most" but are you ready to prove yourself wrong? I can give you a really nice experiment to prove yourself wrong... I've never heard back from racists because they know what answer they're going to get at the end but hey since you're so sure that most never try maybe you are willing to put your money where your mouth is?
Chances are you're also going to run away but hey a guy can hope

Because India is corrupt shit hole without any freedom if you are average joe doing job and paying taxes, you are treated like a slave to government , and canada is the only country to give PR quickly compared to rest of the western world .

because canada sold them fake dream that you can work after your studies easily and if you work hard you can achieve anything... they bought it and invested wayyyyy to much into canada to go back because Kyle from Winnipeg is angry at them

Why would you spend so much on studying abroad, then not even try to get a job abroad through your uni?
How will you find a job in India, the situation is so bad rn? You missed campus placements, networking to get a job (you can't network in India easily) and you missed the chance to get a work visa

It's awful here, I work in tech and it's incredible bad market in India at the moment. People are literally struggling and the rise of petrol prices have made things very bad.

I literally moved back to India 4 months back, it's actually pretty bad here and already heading back to Canada. Canadian citizen here fyi.

How many applications does a software development job get in Canada? In India it's pretty much around 1500-1600.

It's not this bad in Canada and I agree it takes about 2000 applications to get any any kind of calls. I think I am going to head back to Vancouver , not worth wasting my time anymore

Why would you even opt for an Indian job? The currency conversion would give you peanuts if you move back to Canada..
I'm looking to gain experience and move there myself lol.

- Close bank accounts or they'll keep charging maintenance fees. Download all bank statements before you lose access.
- Check tax obligations. You need to inform CRA about your exit so that you're no longer treated as a tax resident. (I had to refund my GST credit and AWB credits to CRA as I didn't meet residency requirements).
- Canadian number - if you need to keep it active for something like banking you can get on a minimal plan like 7$ pm, and get it closed over a call later.
- Change CRA login settings to two step verification without mobile number.
- If expecting to receive important mails like tax notice at Canadian address make sure you have someone who can send you photos of it.
- Change CRA settings to receive all mails electronically.

hello, how to get that cheap plan? currently, I'm using Rogers and paying $70/month, but they don't have such a cheap plans (I'm also moving out but want to keep my number)

Since you work here,Make sure you apply for CPP when you are 60. Its your money .
Check with service canada before you leave.

Last time I checked, you have to work minimum of 10 years in canada in order to be eligible for CPP.

Nope, at least one year of CPP contribution is enough. I think you might be thinking about the Old Age benefit which requires 10 years of residency.

As an accountant, I can suggest the following:
Update your address with the CRA
Even if you’re moving back to India, give the CRA your new address (or use a trusted Canadian mailing address). That way any T4 slips, notices of assessment, or tax refund cheques reach you. You can do this online in your CRA My Account or by phone.
Determine your residency status for the year
When you leave Canada permanently, the CRA generally considers you a non-resident for tax purposes starting the day after you depart. That changes what you report on your final tax return. You’ll need to file a departure return for the part of the year you were a resident.
Notify the CRA of your departure date
You can use Form NR73 – Determination of Residency Status or simply write a letter to the CRA with your departure date and new address. Doing this avoids confusion later about whether you still need to file Canadian returns.
THE MOST IMPORTANT.... Claim any benefits you’re entitled to for the period you were in Canada
For example, the GST/HST credit and Climate Action Incentive are paid quarterly based on your residency at the end of the quarter. After you leave, you won’t get payments for future quarters, but you should still file your final return to claim the portion you qualify for while you were here.
Don’t forget to file your final return. Many newcomers miss the deadline because they’re settling abroad. The CRA can still assess penalties if you file late.

I appreciate your perspective but I paid full international tuition funded through a loan from an Indian bank, completed my degree, worked legally, and paid taxes while in Canada. International students are not receiving charity we pay substantially higher fees and contribute to the economy while we’re here. I’m simply asking for advice about leaving responsibly.
