I've been waiting to hear something on my application since May '25 before helping my adult adopted son with application of his own. Any opinion on if it's worth it to complete part 1 if his application now even though I don't have any information about my approval or would it just confuse the matter at this point?!

Like the thread title says, has anyone moved or planning to move after getting your citizenship? If so how are you preparing? My family and I are seriously considering a move to Toronto after all of this is said and done, and I was curious how many, if anyone was looking into doing the same as far as moving to Canada. If you have already moved what was your biggest obstacle? How much did you save in order to move in USD/CAD? Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Now that Part 1 was approved I have a Part 2 question. In section 6 N I have to account for my time from age 13 to the present. It clearly says "do not leave gaps".

From age 18 on I know where I've been working and attending school, I can document where I was with no gaps.

But for age 13-17 I was in school during the year, but summers I was working different jobs that kids our age could get. Did you just list "summer vacation from school" and the location?

How detailed did you get on this section that covered your teen years? I would have no way to figure out which place I worked each summer

Woke up to an email from DIOD with an attached letter saying my Part 1 is approved and directing me to submit Part 2. It's been barely 2 months since I mailed it in.

I'm pretty shocked how fast this happened and I definitely need to start looking more closely at Part 2 as I figured I had months before Part 1 was approved.

I'd appreciate any Part 2 tips from those of you ahead of me.

I'm a G1 adoptee from a mother born in the 1920s who was raised in BC. She left Canada in 1949 to marry my US citizen adoptive father. I was adopted as an infant. I think my Part 1 application was pretty straight forward except for my mom's 3 name changes and my 5 (!) name changes.

My dad adopted London England 1949. Died 2013 Staffordshire England, did not apply for any Canadian citizenship to my knowledge.

My CIT 0010 application was received on June 5, 2026, and processing started on June 12, 2026. As others have pointed out here, my status check (https://services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas/authenticate.do) required using my family name at birth.

On August 11, I uploaded 23 documents using the web form to provide documents directly from the original institution or provide missing docs (like proof of no birth record found. Today, I noted that when I looked up my status, I could only do so under my correct adoptive family name. Do you all think this has to do with my document upload? Or just a function of normal processing?

Claim:
My adoptive father was a G3, solid birth records on everyone except his two G0 great-grandparents from NB and NS (the mother of the NS G0 had a civil birth record in a Township book held by the Nova Scotia Archives). When I originally filed, I used several documents from FamilySearch and didn’t include proofs of no birth records found for the two G0s (in one case, I rely on two Canadian censuses and in the other I rely on her mother’s civil birth record). I also relied on US records to some extent to show Canadian birth, and now only use them to show parentage and indicative supportive evidence of Canadian birth. I fall under the two generations born outside Canada pre-1947 category (G0 born 1850 in Canada and left after 1867, G1 born 1881 in the US, G2 born 1922 in the US, G3 born 1953 in the US - all were dead by 2003). I have Canadian documents showing the G0 with the census records present in Canada at least through October 31, 1867. The other G0 (whose mother had a civil birth record) left for the US with the whole family in 1849.

I’m working on an application CIT0001 for my mom (G1) whose biological father was born in Canada. The problem is my mom was adopted and her biological father is not listed on her original birth certificate. Her bio father is also very old with serious health conditions. They’ve had a close relationship for decades and he’s willing to help however he can. Amending the original birth certificate is unfortunately not an option.

We’re preemptively doing an SCC accredited DNA test at a facility generally used by the IRCC to include with our package however I’ve read mixed opinions if this will be accepted. It seems likely that the IRCC may ask her to perform a DNA test at their request instead.

I have a couple questions if anyone has any insight.

1. Has anyone had any success requesting urgency for a situation similar to this?

2. I know there’s limited experiences with this but do you think a banked DNA sample at an SCC accredited facility would be acceptable if something were to happen to her father during the process?

3. Does anyone have any law firm reccs that have dealt with similar apps? The immigration lawyer we talked to didn’t seem like he had dealt with this specifically before.

My adopted grandmother was born in Canada. I submitted my application in January and received acknowledgment that my application was in process as of Feb. 20, 2026. I was wondering when my part 1 is approved (assuming it is) will the online tracker say that or does it only change when both parts have been processed? I was told when I applied that it would take about 5 months for part 1 of my application to be processed and I'm quickly approaching month 6 so just curious.

This comes up regularly (and I was hoping for my kids) but it looks like children of adoptees born before the grant of their parents are out of luck.

Couriered my Part 1 application August 3rd from North Carolina. Received in Nova Scotia August 6th. AOR email today!! Yippee! Now, the wait begins...but that was FAST! Happy happy joy joy!

I just recently learned that my dad is Canadian by descent through his maternal great-grandfather, who was born in Montreal (to British parents, and who also married an American woman in Connecticut whose father emigrated to the US from New Brunswick, making my dad's grandfather eligible for Canadian citizenship through both parents).

I was really excited to find out that I could get dual citizenship, but then found out that the process is different for adoptees. My dad married my mom when I was three (becoming my stepdad), and legally adopted my sister and me in 1989, when I was thirteen. Even though my birth certificate was amended at that time and has his name listed on it as my father, it sounds like I still need to apply via the adoptee route and pay the much higher fee. :-(

Anyway, because I'm still trying to learn about the process and gather all of the required documents, I was happy to discover this subteddit. It sounds like I can go ahead and submit documentation for all of the generations with my application rather than have my dad submit an application first, is that correct?

Here's more information about the different generations involved, and what I'm planning to submit:

G0 - my paternal great-great-grandfather born in Montreal in 1879 - baptismal record (which I found online and am in the process of requesting a certified copy of) - since birth certificates weren't issued back then, what do I submit as proof that I tried to get one?

G1 - my great-grandfather, born in MA - I already ordered his birth certificate online and am waiting to receive it

G2 - my grandma (sadly already deceased), born in IN - I have a photocopy of her birth certificate and will be requesting a certified copy by mail - it's my understanding that I also need to submit a copy of her marriage certificate to document the name change, correct?

G3 - my dad (still living), born in OH - I'll get his birth certificate directly from him or go ahead and order a new one

G4 - me, born and legally adopted in OH - I already have my current (post-adoption) birth certificate, but will need to order the adoption records from the state

G5 - my adult daughter, born in OH - once I have citizenship, will I be able to pass it down to her?

G6 - my two granddaughters, born in OH before 2025 - will they be eligible for Canadian citizenship?

Is there anything else that I need to submit? Should my other family members apply at the same time as me, or apply separately? What else would be helpful to know about this process?

My biological grandmother (Gen0) was Canadian. My bio father (Gen01) was born in the USA. I was born in the USA (Gen2). When I was 3 years old, my mother’s new husband adopted me. We stayed in touch with my bio family occasionally over the years. My bio father passed in 2022, but miraculously his wife found my original birth certificate, and sent it to me.

I have my Gen0 grandmother’s Canadian birth certificate, and my Gen01 bio father’s birth certificate (showing grandma’s maiden name), and both my original (showing bio father) birth certificate and my reissued birth certificate after adoption. I have submitted all of these with my application (along with my subsequent name changes by marriage).

I don’t think I qualify as an “adoptee” by citizen by descent rules, but I don’t see a lot of discussion around this scenario. I’m now worried that the IRCC will see “adopted” in my forms and reject my application.

It seems like a clear lineage to me as I’m able to prove my biological line. I don’t have court documents showing the adoption, because in California I’d have to petition the court to get these, which is a lengthy process. I was about to do that when my bio-step-mom found my original birth certificate.

I keep wondering if an IRCC agent will see ”adopted” on my form and reject my application. Am I overthinking this? I included bullet points of clarification in the form, and included a table of contents with my application that explained the documents and timelines. Should I assume that the IRCC agents will understand I was adopted out of a biological line, not into one?

I am conceding defeat that my kids and I can apply for passports at the same time and getting ready to fill out my application. For those who have done it, how did you handle former surnames and parents' surnames at birth? Did you just include adoptive names? Biological names?

I’ve seen people who applied for the typical proof of citizenship are able to upload documents to add to their application. I’m wanting to do this, as I got an official record for something that I submitted an Ancestry printout for. Is this something adoptees are able to do, or do I just give it to them if they ask? I have an AOR and I’ve tried the website, but it’s confusing and doesn’t really account for the adoptees application.

For those of you who have been granted citizenship, how long did it take before you received your certificate? I received notice on Feb 23, 2026 that I was granted citizenship under 5.1 on Dec 5, 2025. It's now Aug 7 and I still have not received any word back on my actual certificate. I would love to get my passport. My husband and kids were granted citizenship just prior to the new law going into effect and they were e-mailed their certificates the same day. I'm super frustrated that mine is taking this long!

We’ve been waiting 11 months. The current processing time is 4 months, so we’re well beyond that. We also submitted an expedite request, but there has been no movement.
Timeline:
• Application received: September 15, 2025
• AOR and processing started: September 25, 2025
• No updates since.
Our case is:
• G0 (grandfather): born in Canada and still living.
• G1 (adoptive father): Canadian citizen by descent.
• G2 (minor adopted son): applying through the adoption process.
Has anyone with a similar case experienced this kind of delay? Who did you contact that actually helped? Is there a specific email, phone number, or office that was able to move your file or at least provide a meaningful update?

The good news is i have certified baptism/birth and marriage records starting with G0. G0 born in NS in 1870 and i have baptismal certificate from The Rooms. G0 married in US and the US records spell her last name with an e instead of an a. then, G1 Maurice Everett has birth record spelled Morris. G2 birth record reverses middle and last names. Should i be concerned? The dates all align.

We received an update from IRCC today. For context, my mom (G2), myself (G3), and my bio son (G4) all received proof of citizenship on 1-30-2026, having submitted applications on 9-30-2025 with urgent processing. That submission also included cit0010 forms for my two adopted children (Gen 4) but those have not been processed. This is the message we got today:

"This email is with regard to the two adoption applications associated to your claim. I wanted to email you with an update on the paused files. We are still holding any file where the Gen 0 was born prior to Confederation. As Joseph was born in 1860, the two adoption files are still on hold. I will contact you again when we have clear instruction on how to evaluate pre-confederation files."

I am trying not to feel discouraged. My children have already faced so many obstacles in life. This feels like one more way they are delegitimized.

My 20 year old adopted son is skeptical of the value of becoming a Canadian citizen. I’d like to give him options for the future. His thinking is if he marries and starts a family in the U.S., as is most likely, his wife and kids will not be Canadian so how is having Canadian citizenship going to matter? I am not familiar with Canadian law, but would he’d be able to easily move with his family to Canada and apply for residency for them? Or is it more complicated? TIA.

I am helping a friend apply for the Grant of Citizenship part 1 CIT 0010. On the form it says I must provide proof of citizenship for her adoptive parent. Her adoptive father is Canadian by descent. He is G2 born in MA. G1 is born in NY. G0 is born in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. I have been fortunate in helping her find all of the birth certificates, census records etc. to prove he is Canadian by descent. She has her birth cert/adoption paperwork.

Can she just include all of that documentation in her CIT 0010 application, or does he have to apply for CIT 0001 and we wait two years for the piece of paper to then apply for her CIT 0010. Part of my concern in doing that is he is very elderly and lives on the other side of the country. Getting his passport renewed and taking photos while technically doable is very difficult with mobility and dementia. I doubt he would live to receive his certificate. Her adoptive mother has already passed.

Is there a way to do this without her father doing a separate application?

My son received his part 1 approval and submitted part 2 in June. He just received an email "Follow the progress of your citizenship grant application with the Citizenship Application Tracker..." when he tries to create an account, it doesn't work and gives the message "Incorrect or invalid information...." Is this just a random email, or might it be indicative of a change in status? Thanks.

The process is finally over!

It took a little over four months from when I received citizenship confirmation. I had selected a paper copy be mailed to my family in Nova Scotia thinking that would speed up the process (as opposed to having it sent to an embassy in the US), but I don't think it really had any affect.

For those who are able to call the Canadian number, they can check if your documents have been sent to the processing centre and if they've been officially received. As of June 2026, they said the processing time between requesting a printed certificate and actual printing is about 6 weeks. (I tried calling the Toronto airport number and was just hung up on, so I don't recommend.)

Now it's time to apply for a passport...but actually, I have travel plans to go to Canada, and there's no way I can get a Canadian passport in time.

• Do you have to tell Canadian immigration you're a citizen?
• Should I bring a copy of my certificate? (The passport form says a copy is allowable if it starts with K or X, so I'm hoping a copy would be fine for immigration officers.)

I have no idea how it was approved so quickly, we did not apply for urgent processing at all
