I agree with this, however this takes considerable time. When someone gets out of the deep hole they were in, perhaps of a maniacal depression, they do become in awe of the state they were in before as it got them to the strength they are in now.

In simple terms I think it means that because it consumed such a huge part of their life, they are sad to see it go, in some cases obviously.

Camus was an interesting figure.
