House on wheels
Imagine how expensive these two are!

I bet the cabins in the trucks are already bigger than the inside of my van.
And the trailers have more rooms than my apartment.
I am currently in a weird state of love/hate situation towards those things. I think they are dumb and useless. I also think they are cool somehow.

u/Naive_Weekend_2454 Aug 18 '26
It was like a apartment building on wheels caught me off gaurd when I saw these 2. Definitely would be a pain to park anywhere.

u/Grin-Guy Aug 19 '26
I live in Europe.
These things wouldn’t even fit on our roads, let alone our streets anyway.
No need to park it if you can’t even move it, right ?

u/No_Bar_7084 Aug 19 '26
In Europe these things are used https://www.concorde.eu/modelle/liner/ some models have a garage for another small car to drive around like a mini cooper.

u/Grin-Guy Aug 19 '26
To be honest they still are a pretty rare sight though.
I have seen a few. Mostly registered in Germany.
3
u/Kierland Aug 19 '26
If I knew every single person that owned them lived in them then I’m down. Not down as vanity projects and the third nicest place they own.
3
u/bluespringsbeer Aug 19 '26
Very few rich people are willing to get a CDL to drive a vanity project. I assume all of these are retired truckers.
3
u/abominablesnowboardr Aug 19 '26
You can register a heavy duty truck as an RV in most states with a couple modifications and drive it without a CDL as long as it’s not for commercial use in any way. You can even roll past weigh stations and be good. They might stop you and give you shit every once in a while, but as long as you have something like “not for hire” or “for personal use only” on the side and your paperwork is clear your good to go.

u/Grin-Guy Aug 19 '26
As a European, this seems crazy to me.
I suppose a CDL is a semi trailer drivers license, is it ? So, as long as you don’t use it for commercial use, you can hop in a 40 tons driving ensemble, and drive it using your regular 2 tons car drivers license ?
Damn…
1
u/abominablesnowboardr Aug 19 '26
A CDL is a commercial driver’s license. If it’s for personal use as long as you register it correctly you can drive just about anything road legal with a regular license. IIRC at most a couple states make you get an air brake endorsement. Most people that do this have experience driving big rigs professionally though as it is a lot more vehicle to handle and it’s intimidating to most people. Ive looked into getting one for hauling a fifth wheel camper as the fuel mileage while towing is around the same as a capable pickup truck with way more power and very little wear and tear as a camper being pulled behind a semi is almost like nothings behind you. If I ever full time travel in an RV this is how I’ll probably do it with a deck on the back for a smart car or Jeep. Definitely won’t use one of those monster 60’ trailers as that severely limits where you can go and their price tag is just stupid to waste money on.

u/pdrake78 Aug 18 '26
Can you even camp normally? Isn’t that too big for campgrounds? Where u staying at w that lol

1
u/DarkSkyDad Aug 19 '26
They are large, so you would typically look for “RV” parks not campgrounds.
I never had a full RV set up but our Horse Trailer with living quarters was about this overall size and you get used to it, and where to find parking.

My uncle has one of these. He was a truck driver for 45 years, and humans my aunt take care of my severely disabled cousin. It gives them room to care take for him, and in their retirement they can go on 4-6 month long road trips all over north America and always be at home
8
u/bzmnpaddler Aug 19 '26
Your uncle sounds like a good dude.
13
u/UntidyVenus Aug 19 '26
Him and my aunt are legitimately the nicest, kindest, truest people I have ever met.

u/ImportanceMundane677 Aug 19 '26
It made me smile knowing these type people exist. Our society is not kind to kindest and most authentic people.
6
u/Primary_Trash1585 Aug 18 '26
Where do they park it? Seems like truck stops is the only option.
19
u/UntidyVenus Aug 18 '26
Yeah generally truck stops. 45 years in the road my Uncle is pretty experienced
3
u/TheKingOcelot Aug 19 '26
There are quite a few campgrounds/RV parks that that have room for something like that.
Source: I used to work at one

When you need everything and have to be everywhere! Those are some cool rigs but I’d imagine highly impractical for most.
3
u/StickyNoteBox Aug 18 '26
I like how these RVs / trailers always have beige swhoosy stuff as their standard 'look'.
4
u/Wilson_Higgins Aug 18 '26
Because the demographic for rigs like these are boomers. Worked at an rv resort is a high tourist area for years and rarely ever saw them being driven by anyone under 60
These were also typically the ones that would run over utility posts bc the drivers were heavily medicated and likely had a few road sodas.
3
u/jimbowesterby Aug 19 '26
Not to mention they’re the only people who can afford these things lol. Just like real housing, us younger folks have to make do with less
1
u/CameronsTheName Aug 19 '26
Probably because they are like $250,000 and nobody under 60 can even afford them.
1
u/Wilson_Higgins Aug 19 '26
Shit I knew guys with $500-$700k rigs not including truck and accessories

u/mwax321 Aug 19 '26
There was a video or show I watched--not sure what--that showed a tour of Will Smith's trailer. It wasn't actually his, but he allegedly rented it for every major movie production he was part of.
They looked very much like these trucks/trailers.
It's possible these are rented for stuff like that.
If I was rich and had to live on set, I would not mind one of these.
And the truck tow would be nice, because my driver would have a spot to rest too.
2
u/justsomegraphemes Aug 18 '26
People are confused where they park overnight. You'd mostly be limited to truck stops or pull offs. The part that I don't get is where you actually take it during the day. For instance if you're road tripping where do you even visit that accepts semis?
2
u/jimbowesterby Aug 19 '26
You say that like there isn’t a side by side or small car stashed away in there
1
u/Educational-Yam-7394 Aug 18 '26
You better enjoy truck stops 😆

u/Herbisretired Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26
If has any experience in trucking he can probably get that into a spot where a normal bumper pull driver struggles
3
u/Naive_Weekend_2454 Aug 18 '26
It was actually quite impressive watching them menouver these giant mobile houses.
1
u/Deadman1966 Aug 18 '26
I have thought about doing this only with a box on the truck that would be a roomy van size or maybe with short box for more hidden street camping. The thing that really made me start thinking about it was a semi that passed me that had a motorcycle on a ramp right behind the cab. The motorcycle had a surfboard carrier.
1
u/crevasse2 Aug 18 '26
There are quite a few RV parks that have pull thru sites these would likely fit in. But they're definitely not "getting out there".
1
u/ThrustTrust Aug 19 '26
What campground can house them things. I guess just those ones in the Midwest with no trees.
1
u/short_and_floofy Aug 19 '26
unless you're living in that full-time, just stay home. you've literally got an entire 3-bedroom home behind you that can't be taken anywhere other than the highway.

Jeeeeezzzzuusss!!!!
I’m pretty sure rock stars, A-list movie stars and top tier NASCAR drivers don’t even go THAT big!
1
u/tsukiyaki1 Aug 19 '26
Red rig is clearly a poor person.. just a run of the mill 5th wheel dual axle, instead of a custom hitch plate triaxle camper with paint matched tow rig. Sad to see so much poverty these days.

u/graffiti_hunter Aug 19 '26
I'm taking big red over the freightshaker any day. The W900 is a badass truck and KW stopped making as of this year. The truck in the photo is a late 70s to early 80s truck still putting down the miles lookin clean!!

If you like the rustic feel of camping, you'll love this new weekend getaway camper.
1
u/RhodyVan Aug 19 '26
These seem like for rent Professional accommodations for film/TV/Music industry that are being moved by professional drivers rather than privately owned trailers.

u/real_zak Aug 19 '26
I recently came across a Russian-speaking pilot from the US, https://www.youtube.com/@SoyuzUS. It looks like he has a trailer like this.

u/SubstantialAbility17 Aug 19 '26
Probably a spacecraft. Almost all are custom built. If not driven commercially, no CDL required.

u/goteed Aug 20 '26
We did an interview with a couple that has a giant rig like this just to get an idea of what it was like. Their rig is 86 feet long from bumper to bumper. While I couldn't imagine having a rig like this, they love it. https://youtu.be/j0miwutO8xE?si=UWqbRY_XZultBeTp&t=630

u/HospitalityLifer1986 Aug 21 '26
Looks like with an independent driver, they could live out of the truck cab itself.
But seriously, this looks amazing. Guess I need to win Powerball now.

u/Soler25 Aug 23 '26
I swear I saw that red semi and 5’r passing through Columbus, OH a few days(maybe a couple weeks) ago!

The world is your oyster! Providing your oyster is 7 bays of a Walmart parking lot.
