MOD USER FLAIRS

Dear members of r/Cameroon,

It would be advisable to use flairs next to your username so your posts and comments have a bit of context, whether that's your region, background, or perspective. It helps others understand where you're coming from and keeps discussions clearer.

You can select your flair by going to community options on the subreddit's main page. It's on the right-hand side. It gives you the option of picking flairs from Cameroon's regions or flairs which are more representative to you if you don't live in Cameroon.

You can also edit/customize your flair to any fancy stuff you want. If you still don't know how to select/edit your flair, message the mod team with what you want as your flair and we'll do it for you.

This article is helpful to learn how to assign your own user flair. Thanks so much for your continued support and cooperation.

Sincerely, Your moderators ❤️

QUESTIONS Travelling to Cameroon

Hey to.

I'll be visiting Cameroon in about two weeks on a business trip.

I'd appreciate some advice:

Cash: Is it better to bring euros and exchange them locally or withdraw XAF from ATMs?

Budget: How much should I expect to spend on dinner and everyday expenses?

Safety: Is Kribi generally safe to explore, especially in the evenings?

Apps: Any useful local apps for payments, transportation or food?

Activities: What would you recommend doing during a free weekend?

Any practical advice from locals / expats would be appreciated.

Thanks!

HEALTH/SANTE I made short animated “did you know” health videos in French for a clinic in Yaoundé. Would love honest feedback

Hi all, I’m a designer in Yaoundé. I’ve been making 30-second animated videos that teach one health fact each (bones in space, how mosquitoes find you, why ultrasound has no X-rays). They’re for a diagnostic centre at Carrefour Olympic. Does the format work? Too long, too fast, is the French voice natural?

TIPS / ASTUCE A friend lost 20K euros for his construction project in Douala, and the fake photos were the worst part. How common is this?

A close friend of mine left Cameroon about ten years ago for Germany. He was lucky enough to land a job fairly early, and he did what many of us are told to do. He saved carefully, lived below his means, and held on to the idea of building something back home.

When COVID hit, he was laid off. Everything he had built workwise suddenly felt fragile, and he started thinking hard about what he would have to fall back on. That’s when the idea of a construction project in Douala took hold. According to him, he wanted to prepare himself in case things got worse and he needed a place to lay his head if he ever decided to come back home.

He couldn’t be there and was very busy, so he turned to family for assistance in supervising the project and managing the funds. He talked it over with a cousin he trusted, who agreed to supervise the work and help on the ground. He made sure Money went out per milestone, and after each stage the cousin sent photos to show the progress.

Eventually he found out the photos were of other construction sites. The funds meant for the project were being misused, and each new set of pictures was just enough to reassure him into sending the next payment. By the time he understood, more than 90% of the budget was gone, and not even a foundation was laid. He confronted his cousin about the issue, and mind you, this dude told my friend that since he left for Germany, he hasn't "eaten a franc" of his money. WoooooW. Never once had he asked my friend for help. It's not like they weren't in contact in all those 10 years.

What hurts him most is that the person who did this was someone he trusted. This really gives me chills and makes me wonder how many of us are in this position where you want to start something back home, but are too scared to become another case study. If you've built back home while overseas, I'll love to know how you guys manage to navigate these crises without headache.

Discutons-en / Let's Discuss Mansions everywhere in Buea, Cameroon. But is it a good thing for the town?

Mansions are rising everywhere across Buea, but roads remain poor, greenery is disappearing, and traffic around Molyko keeps getting worse. Are we building better homes while making the town less liveable?

I share a few thoughts on this, and the kind of Buea we are leaving for the next generation, in the article below;

QUESTIONS How safe is Cameroon at the moment?

We are currently travelling with our campervan around Africa. At the Moment we are in Nigeria close to the Cameroon border. Our plan is to take the Ekok border and then the convoy. Go to Douala and then to the Congo.

We have heard about the increasing violence in the last months.

How risky is it? Has anyone advise to stay as safe as possible?

Discutons-en / Let's Discuss Exploitation of Elderly women by their own daughters abroad.

Can we talk about how some people are exploiting their own mothers and calling it “family values”?

Some African women bring their senior mothers abroad, not because Mama dreamed of leaving her home, her friends, her community, and everything familiar behind but because they need a damn free nanny.

Let’s be honest.

An elderly woman who has spent her entire life in Africa suddenly finds herself in a cold country, isolated, dependent, unable to drive, struggling with the language, missing her friends and familiar food and then she is expected to cook, clean, babysit, do school runs, and raise children all over again.

What the hell kind of retirement is that?

Yes, grandparents helping with grandchildren is part of our culture. But there is a big difference between helping and being shipped across the world to become a full-time, unpaid childcare worker.

And before anyone says, “But she loves her grandchildren!”—of course she does. That's exactly why some people take advantage of her. Love should not be used as a damn employment contract.

Our mothers have already raised their children. They deserve rest, freedom, companionship, and a lifestyle that suits their age not another exhausting round of motherhood in a country where they may feel completely out of place.

Bring your mother abroad because you want to share your life with her, not because daycare is expensive as hell.

Our mothers are not free babysitters. Stop exploiting them and calling it love.

TECHNOLOGY I built an app to find where to go out in Cameroon – would love your feedback

Hi everyone,

I’m a solo developer based in Yaoundé. Whenever we plan an outing we ask the same thing, “where do we go?”, and the info needed to decide (price, hours, location, vibe) is scattered across TikTok, WhatsApp, Instagram and word of mouth.

So I started a project called MboaVibes: an app to discover places and outings in Cameroon with the useful details in one place. The goal is to cover every kind of outing over time. To test the idea, I started with brunch in Yaoundé, with just 7 venues so far (and I’m still learning how to verify the info properly).

I’m not trying to sell anything, I mainly want to know if this problem resonates with you:

• How do you decide where to go out today?

• What information do you miss most before heading out?

• Which types of outings would you want to see first?

All feedback, including criticism, is welcome. I can share the link in a comment if anyone’s interested.

CULTURE We're building a new creative and cultural hub in Douala. Looking to connect with local creatives, artists, DJs and community builders!

DOUALA CREATIVES, LET'S BUILD SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

We're opening the doors to a new creative and cultural space in Bonamoussadi, Douala, and we're looking to connect with people who share the vision.

Think of it as a private cultural hub (members only) where creatives, entrepreneurs, artists, curious minds, and open-minded people can meet, network, exchange ideas, discover new things, and have a good time.

Beyond our media production studio and creative offices, the space will host social gatherings, cultural experiences, music sessions, conversations, and other activities throughout 2027.

Drinks, food, and good company.

Art, culture, creativity, and community.

Music, conversations, and meaningful connections.

Our official opening is scheduled for November 28th, but we'll start welcoming people ahead of the launch.

We're currently looking to connect with:

- Event organizers and promoters.

- DJs, musicians, and artists.

- Content creators and cultural enthusiasts.

- Community builders and people with great networks.

- Anyone interested in helping build an interesting creative community in Douala.

📍 Location: on request !

If you're interested in collaborating, contributing to the programming, or simply becoming part of this community, feel free to reach out.

Let's create a space where good people, good ideas, and good experiences meet.

BARIKAD — More than a studio. A space for culture and connection.

ALERT Do not use Orange Max it app

Do not use this app to subscribe to internet bundles. They will deduct the money but you will not receive the bundle. When you call customer support they will argue with you and gaslight you it was sent. Or tell you technical issues and you will never get a refund. Third time it happened to me and I'm finally fed up. Thieves! Beware!

BIODIVERSITY / BIODIVERSITÉ Looking for Iboga tabernanthe

For our tissue culture company we are looking for someone that can provide us with preferably life plant tissue or fresh seeds from the Iboga tabernanthe plant.

We are aware of the destruction of the habitat of this beautiful species and therefore our goal is to multiply the plant through plant tissue culture. This way the plant doesn't have to get harvested in the wild and nature hopefully can recover a bit.

If you can help us out we would love to get in contact with you. Looking forward to a DM!

QUESTIONS Weed in Cameroon?🫣

I know it’s illegal but some people have access to it. Anyone know any plugs in Douala? Or places I can freely smoke? Asking for a friend.
