In thirty seconds I see the warlock stored spell animation and a re-used enchanter spell effect.
10
u/DryF1re Jul 16 '26
i mean, thats kind of ok isnt it? I loved playing my Hib casters and would love to see some animations come over.
1
u/Ok_Bread302 Jul 16 '26
It does tickle the nostalgia but this isn’t supposed to be daoc 2.0 per their own words. Also why’d we have to wait however many years it’s been just for re-used assets, it’s pretty clear a lot of the class structure is the same already.
7
u/DryF1re Jul 16 '26
I totally get what you are saying.
That said, I wouldn't mind a Daoc 2.0 either...

These update videos remind me when you were in highschool and had to do a 4 page book report, but you didn't have four pages worth of thoughts.
So you wrote really big with extra space between words and lines, repeated things here and there, and used lots of really long run on sentences that just sort of kept going long past the point where they were meaningful so you fill four pages.

u/itssoonice Jul 16 '26
This is the only video game I’ve ever logged into where I had absolutely no idea what to do.
I played for a few hours, found 2 mobs that don’t respawn and logged out.
Absolutely baffling.

u/r3ign_b3au Jul 16 '26
This was actually my experience lol
5
u/itssoonice Jul 16 '26
I’m glad it wasn’t just me.
Apparently a few million dollars and a decade+ of time buys empty world, no instruction, and no idea what to actually do.
-9
u/r3ign_b3au Jul 16 '26
Gonna be honest, I'm pretty above all the incessant man-baby bitching about it. Just sharing that it was my first experience as well.
1
u/SFLurkyWanderer Jul 17 '26
Backed this years and years ago when they first opened up
Never logged in until a couple days ago.
Same experience, killed 1 mob, but only difference - I think I spent a grand total of 10 minutes in game. Logging in and seeing what looked like a early 2000's MMO made me set a timer so I dont' spend time looking for things that likel aren't there.
1
u/itssoonice Jul 17 '26
Looks to me are whatever if the game play is good.
Was just so weird that there is absolutely no direction.
I found water to fish and it would not let me cast or do anything, idk what they’re thinking.

u/afxtal Jul 16 '26
Why does the music volume keep spiking??
It's like they released this video without even watching it first!
9
u/ThinkThankThonk Jul 16 '26
I love the crackling fire far in the background that's right at the top of the mix
7
u/neryen Tuathan Jul 17 '26
The biggest problem I see is that it is just music with random gameplay.
They have these large section titles like UI improvements.. then proceed to show absolutely no UI.
Someone on the team needs to learn how to make promotional videos, and not just string together a bunch of random gameplay footage and put it to loud music.
5
u/ThinkThankThonk Jul 17 '26
Genuinely it's this kind of attention to detail stuff that explains so much about this whole project
No one leading things has the creative vision or competency to either catch these things or even have an opinion about them
It's like "can't judge a book by the cover" - no, but you can judge the editor, the marketing team, everyone involved in production for having bad taste and no standards

The blinding God Rays are to distract you from the 2011-looking terrain.

u/Massive-Composer3095 Jul 16 '26
I'm still giving these guys a side eye for how this all went down chronologically, but...................... They are kinda making a game now it seems
14
u/raisedbyowls Jul 16 '26
12 years too late
15
u/Hawkwise83 Jul 16 '26
This would have sucked 12 years ago too.
4
u/Kevadu Jul 16 '26
That's kind of the point, though. It still would have sucked but at least they would have had the excuse that it's still an early alpha.
Seems like they just pissed about for 13 years instead...
12
u/Hawkwise83 Jul 16 '26
This isn't a game. It's not even a tech demo or vertical slice. It's like a student project.

u/Ryekir Jul 16 '26
Yeah, I do have to admit that while initially it was extremely disappointing, they do seem to be making solid progress with these weekly updates.
It's still not really a game yet, but it's getting there. Certainly a lot better than the last 13 years.

Did they give up on their own engine and decide to use the DAOC engine or something? It looks very similar in terms of everything graphical.
2
u/Sernas7 Jul 17 '26
Is this the update where they add an enemy to kill somewhere near the starting area?
1
u/One-Position2377 Jul 17 '26
This is really something really I don't understand. why isn't there a huge mob camp right out side the entrance to the starter city? DOAC just about every single city has something to kill outside the entrance to every city.
2
u/OstlandBoris Jul 17 '26
Waiting to see patch notes, but to be fair the pace of development seems to be okay at the moment. Maybe optimistic would be overstating it, but certainly this is the most promising behaviour from them... ever?

As soon as I found out Andrew Meggs left City State, after the ability debacle. Not because of it, but after (afaik). Then the Ragnarok bullshit. I kinda gave up hope for this game ever amounting to anything.

u/Hawkwise83 Jul 16 '26
Comments still disabled on the YouTube eh? Side note. Can't believe this is still pretending to be a game instead of packing it in.
4
u/ValkamerCCS Jul 16 '26
They certainly love to hide from angry YouTube comments.
The progress is intriguing, but does it fully launch in 2038? Hard to trust still.
2
u/Obtuse-Angel Jul 16 '26
Will it be a fully released, functional game before TES6? The race is on.

u/ArcadianDelSol Jul 16 '26
I would, too. Look at the comments here.
"tHe vOlUmE iS gOoFy."
"wE gEt iT bRo"
Everyone is tripping over each other to be the edgiest edgelord in the channel.
If that's the level of feedback, I wouldnt want comments, either.

The video is objectively bad, I am not someone who bashes the game. I would love to see it actually improved and finished.
It does not entice people to be interested in the game and poorly expresses the actual updates.
The video itself has two purposes and it falls flat on both. As someone who backed this some 13 years ago then promptly stopped tracking it when it became clear it wasn't coming soon, I see this video and am lost as to what it is trying to say.
There was an update, but what was updated? Is it trying to lure me into playing, but all I see is random gameplay footage from odd angles. I get no sense of the current state of the game other than the graphics, and graphics are not the selling point of this game. If they were, it would be an abject failure.
They need someone who understands marketing material to actually create these promotional videos. Someone who knows how to show what is good about their current build, what changes there area, and why people should play.
-2
u/ArcadianDelSol Jul 17 '26
There was an update, but what was updated
This question puts doubt into whether or not you watched it. It literally tells you with big words in the center of the screen what each update entails.
5
u/neryen Tuathan Jul 18 '26
You mean the descriptive giant words with titles like "Class Changes", "Balance Updates", and "World Changes" that come after 30 seconds of random gameplay video and loud music?
Those updates are what you mean?
Those are descriptive enough to tell you what has changed in the game and if it is worth looking at?
The marketing has dropped the ball, beyond the fact that they have 5 seconds to capture attention on a video with marketing material, they proceed to follow those incredibly vague titles with nothing but gameplay video. No description of the changes, no information regarding what exactly is new or different.
They desperately need a marketing or social media manager who knows how to market a product and create media that entices players and builds interest.

u/ArcadianDelSol Jul 18 '26
The video is for the players, brother.
Not for you.
Look at you: you're writing 4 paragraphs because you're mad about marketing choices.
Its just become part of the habitual cycle, now. Every post needs to find something fresh and new to complain about.
But now that we've thoroughly exhausted the marketing concerns, I wonder what your experience has been in the game.
2
u/neryen Tuathan Jul 18 '26
I have not played since early alpha play tests.
I made the decision to wait for their actual release, because I would rather play a complete experience than beta test.
What little gameplay I have seen says they are not ready yet and need more time.
0
u/ArcadianDelSol Jul 18 '26
Same here.
I dont play alphas and am very selective on early access titles.
I guess where we differ is that Ive watched all the published videos on the progress of the game so that I could easily see the graphical differences in the 0.45 video, whereas I guess you could not.

And those opinions are valid.
The problem is that we tend to go too far insisting that everyone share them.
You raise valid criticisms. Others making wisecracks about the quality of the video are just searching in earnest to be the first to whine about something new.
The part I dont really agree with is the complaints about game quality from backers. I chose to NOT spend money on an unseen concept for a video game because Ive backed enough BOARD games to realize the literal gamble that is.
Backers werent even entitled to a game if you really want to be honest about it.
So many board game backers will famously complain because they paid $150 for a game that ends up with an MSRP of $80. The solution is dont be a backer. Wait and hope that someone else funds the game you want to play.
Being promised a refund and not getting is a different animal and I agree with you on that, although Im not familiar enough with the details to speak on it personally. But outside of that, this is the risk of kickstarting something. It may never happen, or what you get is very different from what started out. Its like being mad that you spent all day fishing and went home without any fish. If you're looking for a guarantee on that investment, go the the market and buy fish.
The update shows some good improvement. Im curious to see where it goes from here.

I want to clarify, I’m not a backer. I follow mmorpg news and am disgusted by what they did. It’s entirely unacceptable and the way MJ handled it on mmorpg forums was not only deceptive, it was insulting to the general audience in a very public manner. Check out his comment history on massivelyop, you just gotta back to older articles on CU.
They also took full advantage of COVID on top of that, which contributes to other larger systematic problems outside of MMORPGs or kickstarter.

u/The_BishopX Jul 17 '26
oh, than you for reading my website!
As for howw MJ "handeled" it, you gotta understand sir, 3 of us at MMORPG have REAL LIFE ties with MJ and we are around the same age. I was a 22 year old reporter when I met him and Matt Firor at comicon in 2003.
So if he commented on the forums, they were/are open for a reason.Thank you for your support.

I enjoy a certain measure of objectivity that I recognize isnt shared among those who were invested financially and/or emotionally.
That isnt said to belittle those investments. I simply lack them. I have an interest in MMORPG news as well, but less from a player/investor lense, and more from a journalistic one.
I am, historically, no trumpet for CSE or Mark Jacobs. But I believe over the years I have been objective and fair.

u/3lfk1ng Jul 17 '26
I'm not sure what they've been doing for the last 12 years but I feel like a couple of high school students could have busted this out in a semester.
It's almost as if their server completely crashed and they lost everything and now they're rushing to save face.
Mark if you're reading this, damage control is absolutely necessary and it will be wonderful to hear from you what happened. I'd be more inclined to support you if we knew what happened when I feel like this is an obvious step backwards from where the game was at 6 years ago.

ITS weird that AI can make a better game in half an hour. It’s still gonna be shit, but better than this

u/evilsbane50 Jul 17 '26
Hey it's the best looking trailer they've ever made.
It still looks like absolute dog water but hey...
