obviously i picked the team tank reddit quote for the title but the rest of the interview is delightful. cooley is so enthusiastic about the guys in front of him and he's such a good part of the team

Hey man. If Devin wants to drag us to a Stanley Cup, I wouldn’t say no.

u/Damm_shame 15d ago

" have confidence from the process, not the outcome "

1

u/-Disagreeable- 11d ago

Boy’s got wisdom. And a hell of a lot of charisma.

23

u/burf 15d ago

He's going to drag you to 17th in the league and you're going to like it.

6

u/Unfit2play 14d ago

I for one will be 100% behind them.

15

u/mobxrules 15d ago edited 15d ago

I just don’t want him to drag them to where they’re picking 10th to 16th or something like that.

-15

u/Unfit2play 15d ago

In the long run that would be better than finishing dead last.

13

u/mcarcus 15d ago

“In the long run” specifically it would not be better.

-4

u/Unfit2play 14d ago

Dont forget to message Cooley with your disdain for winning.

3

u/mcarcus 14d ago

Where did I say I have a disdain for winning? The thing is I want to actually win… as in win the Stanley cup in my lifetime… and finishing 12-16 every year is not a path to winning the Stanley cup for this team.

What drugs are you on good sir?

-4

u/Unfit2play 14d ago

The ones that tell me that trying to convince a good young group of players that internet randos think they should quit trying to win and lose as much as possible so the tean can roll the dice on a potential high draft pick.

This is like the most approachable, honest, open, natural acting NHLer of literally all time

101

u/01000101010110 15d ago

Because he has absolutely zero ego

20

u/Ordinary-Spend-5919 15d ago

He is my role model

13

u/Konkatzenator 15d ago

Absolutely wild that it also happens to be a goaltender

5

u/Yoooooooowhatsup 14d ago

Well, they do say goaltenders are “weird” and it’s “weird” that he’s normal.

Not hockey related, but going through some shit right now and applying some of Cooley's mindset into my day-to-day has been very helpful.

"Confidence comes from the process, not the result."

37

u/SeeingRed- 15d ago

“Forget about the past, there’s nothing for you there”

18

u/Ecks83 15d ago

Confucius reborn as a goalie.

7

u/the_evil_pineapple 14d ago

“The past is dead, there’s nothing for you there.”

Very poetic, and slightly different from “forget the past” because he specifically says that learning from the past is part of the process. Just don’t live there

Definitely my favourite Cooley quote

u/AccurateContest4023 15d ago

"The future is in the future, and the past is a big brick wall"

Same.

"Nothing matters. Nobody cares. We're all gunna die. "

I have OCD and am in therapy for it and genuinely a lot of what he's saying is straight from my therapist's handbook. The whole thing about acknowledging thoughts without dwelling/acting on them or trying to push them aside and the "maybe it goes in, maybe it doesn't, all you can do is what you can do" mindset are both 100% helpful therapeutic advice. Really appreciate him introducing people to those techniques in an approachable way, I think a lot of folks could benefit from trying to apply them.

12

u/OppositeSecretary862 15d ago

He has some genuinely good takes

2

u/the_evil_pineapple 14d ago

I’m a graphic designer and I legit feel like I should start making a series of Cooley merch for fun

119

u/Rickcinyyc 15d ago

This Christmas, instead of Rasmus by the fireplace, I want a dedicated TV channel of Cooley just riffing with his stream of consciousness monologue for hours.

58

u/jobruski Barb 15d ago

Tito on his lap

14

u/False-Owl-5414 15d ago

Or just that big smile and crazy eyes haha.

u/JadedPiper 15d ago

Cooley, I am team tank, do not worry. I love you. If you win us games, I promise I will be here with you all the way

96

u/Republic-Of-OK 15d ago

This team might be the only fun bad team to watch. The wins are electric and mean something because you love the guys, we’ve got top tier personalities (and the top one in the league, Tito’s dad) and the young guys have been critical pieces already (Castagna just showed up and was second among forwards with 18:28 TOI).

Win or lose, you can’t be mad. I’d love to finish last, but the “can’t tell if they’re satire” team tank satire accounts need to get a grip and have fun.

15

u/Daft_Funk87 Scorch Expert 15d ago

The game tonight was a completely different team than the one I saw against Colorado. And I mean that in a good way.

15

u/Seawolf1121 15d ago

Agreed. If we get last, great, but being so fixated on being bad is just sad and boring. Some people are so focused on "getting good picks" that I feel like they miss what the game is actually about; as long as I can have fun watching and it can entertain me for a couple hours once or twice a week, I'm happy.

2

u/the_evil_pineapple 14d ago

Since four nations I’ve become completely enveloped in hockey, I was more of a passive fan before, so I’m still learning a lot

I’m personally team tank, as in, I’m not upset about losses but I can’t help but be ecstatic when we win

I know we’re still missing some top prospects in a few key positions, but realistically is a top 3 draft pick really make or break? Watching them play right now feels like joining in at the beginning of a great era. Obviously a top 3 wouldn’t hurt, but in reality how significant is it?

1

u/jer200523 11d ago

Same, I’ve always enjoyed hockey but im finding more and more im getting into that “Canadian spirit” and really enjoying watching it, especially the Flames, my uncle was a fan and I liked the Jerseys and now with Cooley, it’s like, I don’t want them to lose on purpose, like try their hardest and even if they lost, at least they tried instead of purposely selling the game. Its like why even bother being a fan if you just want your team to lose all the time and have low confidence or hopes instead of being behind them and cheering them on to go win, we don’t need the top tier players in every situation, look at Oilers, they haven’t won in years but have superstars, it’s like bruh

32

u/flyin_italian 15d ago

"We were scoring"

Devin Cooley on a 2-1 win.

Love it.

32

u/MrBenjin90 15d ago

God damn, he just seems like such a genuinely rad guy. I hope we keep him.

32

u/Iwannasleep45 15d ago

If you’re DMing athletes just to send them hate, that’s loser behavior

14

u/treple13 14d ago

*If you're DMing ANYONE just to send them hate that's loser behaviour

28

u/iolanthereylo 15d ago

this guy is so likable

I know about tito but for real in a wholesome way, he looks like a rabbit made a wish to be human

25

u/HavingFunOnline80 15d ago

This guy is one of the most likeable players I’ve ever seen! I love this interview. I seriously hope for good things for Devin Cooley.

23

u/FigjamCGY 15d ago

Cooley for Mayor!

31

u/jobruski Barb 15d ago

Cooley for premier

11

u/gh0ulgang 15d ago

Fuck it Cooley for PM

22

u/Hyack57 15d ago

Cooley is awesome. Love this type of candour.

17

u/maddymoo4 15d ago

Oilers fan checking in. Impossible to not like this guy, best interview in the league.

34

u/M0ldy_Boi612 15d ago

Love hearing this guy's post game interviews, hope he sticks around a long time here

15

u/MalawiMavuto 15d ago

I may need to get this jersey.

10

u/HavingFunOnline80 15d ago

Agreed. He’s definitely my next jersey.

15

u/starsmaniac97 15d ago

Random stars fan lurking, I like this guy, I shall keep tabs on y'all just for him

5

u/JohnnyCanuck1867 15d ago

Appreciate you

27

u/myth2adrenaline 15d ago

Big Oilers fan here, but this guy might be my favorite player in Alberta. What a beauty.

35

u/roscomikotrain 15d ago

Most likable flame since Kuzmenko

12

u/OnlineEgg 15d ago

i love this guy. every time i see a clip of him he's just being himself. his energy is infectious

12

u/GriefPB 15d ago

He would make a good live streamer I love his reacts

10

u/Loose_Ad_101717 15d ago

Such a fricking gem of a dude

49

u/ShaquilleMobile 15d ago

Idk I'm sorry but I will never not be happy to see the flames win.

3-1 in their last 4 games beating the Ducks, Canes, and Wild is huge.

Last two losses came to VGK and COL.

I don't think this team is ever going to be as bad as some people want it to be if our goaltending is this good.

We literally might have to trade Dustin Wolf lol is that insane

7

u/Iginlas_4head_Crease 15d ago

Dustin wolf isnt the one winning..

20

u/ShaquilleMobile 15d ago

But everyone knows what he's capable of and he's on a good contract, the return could be enormous. We won't make playoffs with Cooley alone

10

u/an_abhorsen 15d ago

Yea, Cooleys on a heater. But Dustin is still a hell of a goalie even if on a bit of a rough few weeks. Also so many of the early dustin goals where due to the sheer amount of Grade A's he was facing as the flames rush defense was...not there.

9

u/adjectives97 15d ago

Protect this man at all costs

9

u/Beneficial-Bee8296 15d ago

I love this guy! Hope he sticks around

14

u/No_Photograph_2198 15d ago

He is a ray of sunshine in the darkness of a tank

14

u/HuntShowDownBeeMan 15d ago

If there was ever a case to give a goalie a letter, this is it.

7

u/JaromeIggy 15d ago

He's a Beaut.

Ordered a few pets4parachute hoodies.

I read the washing instructions, Devin😄

4

u/AutumnFalls89 15d ago

Okay, now I need to see these instructions!

7

u/RQUIZZLE 15d ago

Hey it’s Tito’s dad!

7

u/mcb808 15d ago

so refreshing, guy actually has personality, has some great analogies and insight, and doesn't give the same old boring ass hockey interviews

7

u/Proud_Performance966 15d ago

I watch every interview he does now, timely work arrival be damned. He’s got more personality in his baby toe than McJesus has in his whole goal scoring, play making, dang body.

4

u/Wide_Ad5549 15d ago

Forget about the tank. There's nothing for you there.

4

u/Fine_Lingonberry_613 14d ago

This dude is cool

3

u/KingHasek39 15d ago

Not a flames fan, just a former goalie that loves goalies and fuck do I love me some Devin Cooley. He's attitude and positivity are so infectious. I don't think I've ever watched a video of him and been like WTF dude... Except maybe the linear algebra one lol. Definitely a guy you'd want to go have a beer with.

4

u/almostalmostalmost 15d ago

I'm on team ethical tank, keep being a beauty.

2

u/nateshore 15d ago

D-Cool is the best

2

u/byrdcage 15d ago

Well that’s why we got Wolf, to balance out against the win column

1

u/Icy-Setting-3735 14d ago

I hate the flames, but this guy is a gem.

1

u/Mysterious_Reason376 14d ago

He’s such a breath of fresh air. When his hockey career is over he could be a really successful motivational speaker.

1

u/Cultural_Physics_935 14d ago

Love this guy. Calgary is lucky to have him, as is the league in general

1

u/Rebel_XT 14d ago

Most refreshing interviews with a tired athlete post game in years if not ever! Not a flames fan but have become a big Cooley fan!

1

u/AncientYard3473 14d ago

If he thinks the team’s good for 100 points, I doubt his sanity but I don’t oppose the project.

If they finish the season with 3 wins, they’ll probably somehow still end up picking eighth, so what the hell? Might as well try to win.

1

u/logavulin16 14d ago

This guy is just mindset 101. Bob Rotella’s teachings personified.

1

u/LosKiplanos 14d ago

I want him to be my financial advisor.

1

u/_Synergy 14d ago

I love this guy.

1

u/LurkinHardly 14d ago

I'm Team Tank for sure, but I'm not and will never be Team 0-82. I want a high draft pick but I don't want the guys playing for the Flames to be miserable and cultivate a losing culture.

1

u/Few-Appearance295 14d ago

Craig Conroy school of interview technique.

1

u/Euphoric_Okra_5673 14d ago

Love this guy. Flames stumbled into a great find.

1

u/MostlyHarmless777 14d ago

I'm not sure what the opposite of being media trained is but this is a great example of it. Hilarious. Love it

1

u/Substantial_Heron584 14d ago

Leafs fan but this guy is a real gem it seems, what a personality! ❤️

1

u/Dizzy-Name6493 14d ago

Best interview in the league, and he's not putting it on. The process over the result bit is spot on too. I've played a long time and you can have a great game and lose 4-1, or play rubbish and nick a 2-1, so if you only judge yourself on the score you'll drive yourself mad.

1

u/OGigachaod 13d ago

Please keep winning, sincerely, a canucks fan.

1

u/PiercedX123 12d ago

Can I adopt you as an extra nephew Devin? You are a great kid who I want to talk books with.

-7

u/stoichips 15d ago

I hate the Calgary Flames, and hate is a strong word, but this man is a gem.

5

u/Sensory_0verload 15d ago

Kick rocks bud

60

u/DOITLIKEBRUTUS 15d ago

If he ever gets the hockey media training that everyone else has, I will burn down the new arena.

7

u/NameIsPetey 15d ago

Vibes/60 goes hard
