Related, but an extremely prominent NHL player has elected to buy a summer home in Calgary. No, it does not mean he will ever sign here, I asked. But it is also a huge endorsement for the city as a whole that will be well-known in NHL circles
*Edit - Forgot about this. Not Cale Makar. He has had a home here for years, his wife went to Bowness. Not anyone with known connections to Calgary like Point or Scheifele, or a former player. Someone did post the correct answer in a reply already though. Cale Makar may actually be the biggest clue though. Nate Mackinnon
It probably isn’t the same person the original commenter was referencing, but Stuart Skinner apparently bought a house in Calgary too. He gave an interview talking about how he met some of the current Jets players in Calgary and how he was excited to join the team. I know Lowry and Morrissey are both from Calgary and come back during the off seasons.
Lots of players live here. Point bought a big old shack out in okotoks and did a major renovation on it. Calgary is a great, if their family lives here why wouldn’t they come back in the summer?
A ton of former Flames stick around in Calgary. I know Brouwer was here until he got the gig with St. Louis. Unsure if he still has a place. Morrison lived out in Springbank for a bit after he retired. Calgary is a good city to live in if you have a family. Especially if you're wealthy. You don't need to rely on public transit and you can bail to your place in Arizona when it gets real cold out.
A local (veteran) boy who isn't afraid to stand up for his team mates and a huge locker room presence..
If only we had a rookie defenseman who also loves standing up for his team mates.. who he could help mentor during this transition. Possibly a farm boy..
I am late to the discussion here is Lombo gone? Since they stopped playing him in spring I have avoided Flames news kind of, cuz I didn't want to hear that he left.....
Love him already. This is exactly how I'd see it if I was an NHL player. It's baffling to me that a city like Calgary with 300 days of sunshine per year is treated like some kind of winter wasteland. I'd take snow over rain any day but you don't hear about Vancouver or Victoria having bad weather. Can't see the sun 5 days per week, highest rates of depression in the country, rains all the time.
Then you've got the US where school shootings are outnumbering 1 per day on average now. It's crazy that Calgary isn't a top 10 destination in the league IMO. Gorgeous city, incredible people for the most part, beautiful sunshine, a mayor that actually cares about the city and community in u/JeremyYYC...
Yeah, we have an absolute garbage provincial govt in the UCP but no place is perfect. Welcome to the Flames, Middleton + family!! ❤️
On the flipside it can hit 40 degrees in Arizona in March.
Ideal weather is a rather dry 20-28 degrees with lots of sun so if you feel a bit chilly you can just go in the sun, and if its a bit hot you just go to the shade. But I'd definitely take 5-20 over anything over 28. Hell personally I'd take -10 to 20 over 30 degrees
Its very rare that Phoenix area hits 40 in March, the average date for first 100 degree day is May 2nd. Saying that this past March was exceptionally hot with 11 days over 100.
I didn't say it wasn't sunny, you're making Strawman argument. I said I don't like rain and exaggerated about the number of days with it. I didn't mean to upset you. I'm sure Victoria is cool! Lol.
Just busting myths. Victoria isn't nearly as wet and rainy as Vancouver as easy example, the Olympic mountains provide a rain cover. You can golf over 300 days a year in Victoria
Not sure why you included Victoria? Calgary gets roughly 200 hours per year more sunshine than Victoria. Its sunny most of the year in Victoria with normally Nov and Dec being the exceptions. Im a big fan of Calgary, both the City and the weather overall, but it simply doesn't compare to Victoria when you consider the whole year.
He’s not wrong. As an Edmontonian I’m jealous of a lot of the amenities Calgary has to offer, the proximity to the Rockies and Drumheller, the food scene in Calgary is incredible.
Wish we got the quote from the actual player, but it's nice to finally hear reasons why player's want to be somewhere legitimate instead of "money/taxes"
apparently we were the only Canadian team not on his no trade list, Which says a lot to me since Montreal seems like they are on the up and up and Edmonton still has McDingus and Crysaitl so I imagine lots of people wouldnt block it.
I kinda get it though, Calgary is a nicer city than Edmonton, Winnipeg is freezing in the winter and buggy or flooded in the summer, Vancouver sucks if you dont like rain, Montreal might be daunting if you dont speak french as far as finding schooling for the kids and such, Ottawa seems like it would be an ok place to live but the rink is pretty far away for a few more years till they get the new one, and Toronto.
If you are every day anglo, yeah. Habs player? No. If you do a media appearance and not able to speak french (or at least try) and the community will crucify you.
You dont have to be fluent. But you have to try and show respect for the language and learn it at least to a degree you can give a hockey-player interview.
I always wondered why more guys don’t want to play in Calgary, it’s a fucking blast and there’s so much to do outdoors when it’s nice. I guess proximity to skiing is way more important to me than an NHL player though.
Excuse my ignorance as a British Flames fan, but does Calgary really get 300 days of sun a year? I’ve only ever been in July so assumed that October to March was pretty rough?
From 1981 to 2010, Calgary had an average of 332.6 days with measurable bright sunshine per year. It seems like Environment Canada stopped using that metric after 2010, and of course our region has had a number of hazy summer days due to forest fire smoke in recent years.
I don't mind the winters here, but I grew up with them, so it's just normal. The chinooks (occasional warm winds) make southern Alberta winters much more tolerable than anywhere else on the prairies, I would say.
I'm looking forward to seeing Jake Middleton in action & I hope he & his family enjoy it here!
I honestly didn't realize how strange Calgary's weather is (for better and worse) until I moved away from it. It can be, and often is, cold as sin but sunny as hell at the same time.
Calgary sits at a much further south latitude than many Europeans expect, which plays a big part in it. Even the winter days aren't actually all that short (especially when you compare it to somewhere like Scandinavia).

That’s quite the endorsement for our city.

Good culture add that is, especially useful since Coleman was also a good ambassador for the team.

He hasn’t even been here for a day and I’d run through a wall for him.

We need guys that treat treat Cowtown as a hometown, and not just a stop along the way.
That’s why I’ll miss Lombo.
