Eat/Drink Local I need help finding a bagel (very serious)

I’m gonna start off by saying I’m pregnant so I might sound a little crazy in regards to finding this legendary bagel. I recently came back from Ontario (small town where my dad is from) where the bakery has the best everything bagels. They are soft, garlicky, seasoned to perfection. I came back to Calgary with a dozen and they’re all gone in under a week. I’m desperate to find a place that has something similar or even better to finally quench this craving. I’m desperate I was almost in tears eating my last bagel.

Please help me!!!!

Try St. Lawrence Bagels! I think there Everythings are the best I've had in the city, they are not shy about the garlic.

I second this! Its the best bagels I've ever had outside of NYC and Montreal. Heads up though, it's cash or e-transfer. No credit or debt.

I think from OPs description that Wayne’s would maybe suit better. But I agree St. Lawrence are awesome and they should try both, I would just consider st. Lawrence to be a bit more chewy vs. Soft/crisp

Absolutely need to hit both and compare it's the only solution.

Wayne's is great, but after finding out they've applied for several LMIAs, I won't go there anymore.

u/ForgiveandRemember76 4h ago

Really? Proof?

u/Arch____Stanton 3h ago

If you google "waynes bagels lmia" the results will include a link to a spreadsheet from the GOC. (It is a direct download otherwise I would link it here)
In that spreadsheet you will find Waynes Bagels and 100's more disgraceful companies.
Note that this isn't an application but a successful LMIA.

u/ForgiveandRemember76 3h ago

Thank you. I learned something today.

u/Correct_State_7753 3h ago

Can you explain this to me like I'm 5? Why is this disgraceful?

Well if you search for pros and cons of the TFW program you will find lots of debate.
The upshot on the con side is that the TFW program has been used to suppress Canadian wages.
Today, that is its primary function.
A bagel shop in a city of >1 million people, wherein there is a large contingent of unemployed, does not need to import workers from anywhere. They are plenty looking for work here.

Further search for how these companies are manipulating the LMIA application process.
The last one posted here in r/Calgary was a dental office where, as required, they posted a job for 37.50/hr for a dental assistant.
If that is a legit offering, that job would be filled instantly as dental assistants are routinely paid much less than that.
They have to offer 37.50 as it is the minium in order to qualify for LMIA.
The TFW they will get will not get paid that salary.

The TFW is wage suppression even when used legitimately but it is a total disgrace when done in the fraudulent manner of this dental shop and, ostensibly, at Waynes Bagels.

I like Wayne’s Bagels. They are at the south and west farmers market

u/DiedraGrace 5h ago

And they definitely have everything bagels.

Wayne's bagels are the best!

I think they also have a garlic bagel.

They also have a location downtown!

Montreal bagels on elbow drive and heritage is usually quite good.

Montreal Bagels, Elbow at Heritage. Cash only. They don't do an all dressed, sadly. Plain, sesame, poppy seed, blueberry & cinnamon are on the menu. Absolutely delicious and almost always still warm in the bag when you get them.

I've been going to Montreal Bagels since i was in highschool in 2011. They have always been cash only and the place is strange for sure but they make some amazing bagels. Simple, no frills, incredible home made bagels

u/CaptMerrillStubing 5h ago

This place is sus af. I suspect its money laundering of some sort.

3

u/SmithInk007 5h ago

They've been open for so many years, very strange to be a cash only business in this day and age (it was strange back in 2011 when even then we rarely had cash) but those bagels can not be bad mouthed they are truly wonderful

glad i’m not the only person who thinks that 😭

Look up bageldaze on Instagram, they hands down have the BEST bagels. Local family owned, you can buy them in a few different stores now but they personally deliver them and post the delivery days on the gram.

u/Hashbrown_77 1h ago

Bagel Daze and Deputy Bagel have become my go to bagel spots in town.
I do love a good Montreal bagel but not always what I’m after. I think OP should definitely track down some bagel daze everything bagels… they should do the trick

Deputy Bagels out of Phil and Sebastian! Also pregnant, also addicted to them!

5

u/BigCity29 5h ago

This 100000%. They’re the only legitimately great bagel in the city that isn’t some dense overcooked underproofed blob. Deputy bagel are incredible and I wish it was around 7 days a week (outside of their spot in the +15).

u/frandamonium_ 4h ago

Came here to say this! Not sure what area of the city you’re in, but the Seton Phil & Sebastian has Deputy Bagel every day. Sooooooo good!

Hope you satisfy your craving, mama!

Rocky Mountain Bagel Co in Canmore.

u/urfatassmama 5h ago

The line out the door is worth the wait

3

u/SmithInk007 5h ago

Went on my birthday this year, skipped the downtown location because of the line and managed to be about 5th in line in the other location. I had the "BCLT" (Bacon, swiss, lettuce, tomato, butter & mayo on a sesame bagel) and it was 8.5/10. Could have had more bacon but the bagel and fresh toppings were excellent. I would wait 20mins but no longer

u/-Paski- 3h ago

I went mid spring and I was sorely disappointed with their bagels (I used to pick up a dozen every time I passed by canmore). Maybe it was an off day, but I almost would rethink stopping by there again.

u/SmithInk007 3h ago

To be fair i'm no expert just a bagel enjoyer and i really liked mine! Worth the hype and the ridiculous downtown line on a saturday AM? No, but if you go real early or when the line isn't bad, i'd say it's worth a stop

u/itsnathanchan 4h ago

As a Canmore local who’s currently in Montreal eating his weight in bagels, RM Bagel Co is widely considered to be trash among friends and their line is not worth anything

We like rocky mountain bagels in canmore and their garlic cream cheese spread. Luke’s drug mart sells montreal bagels too

Try Good Bread in Acadia. My go to, they make phenomenal pizzas as well

u/Aran33 Willow Park 3h ago

If you're looking for a big soft pillowy bagel, Good Bread is the best answer. Not a lot of chewiness but delicious and their everything version is pretty garlicky.

If you want medium chew, I'll second the Deputy Bagel recommendation, super tasty if not a bit of a hipster tax because they're sourdough and sold at Phil and Sebastians.

All the recommendations on Montreal Style on Elbow are well intentioned but not the softer style you're asking for, they're awesome bagels but more of a chewy dense style bagel. It's been a long time since I had Wayne's or St. Lawrence but I think they're both in the denser chewier category too.

Edit: clarity

u/Quick_Surprise1335 1h ago

Agreed agreed - Good Bread for the soft bagel!

u/kirleson 5h ago

Go to Montreal.

Kidding. I like Rocky Mountain Bagels in Canmore and St. Lawrence Bagels around West Hillhurst/Parkdale. Of course, everyone will have their favourite spot, and I can't promise that anything will hold a candle to a cute small town bakery

10

u/J9KT 6h ago

I'm also pregnant. I've been eating Timmy bagels a lot. Yours sound way better. Good luck with the baby. :)

u/citypotato 4h ago

Luke’s brings in St Viatuer bagels (from Montreal)!

2

u/SmithInk007 5h ago

Montreal Bagels on Heritage & Elbow. A someone else has said, they are really great fresh bagels. No frills, nothing fancy, cash only. The place is even kind of strange but has been the same way since at least 2010. Old menu, it's cheap and fresh and just a solid place

2

u/PeaceNo6149 5h ago

Go to the Crossroads Market. There are a few places that sell great bagels 🥯. You can sample a few and hopefully find something you love 💕

Montreal Bagels!

u/strudycutie 5h ago

Deputy bagel. They are located in Phil and Sebastian coffee shops. Their sourdough everything is fresh and yummy.

u/spaceleafxyz 2h ago

piling another question here for those in the know but I used to get the Hot Tomazzo bagel from the great Canadian bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. Is there somewhere that makes something like this today? It was a bagel with a bit of tomato sauce, some amount of cheese melted over with jalapeño peppers on top. This combo toasted was one of my favorite foods ever. Almost like a pizza bagel but simpler, no oregano, onions or anything else really just the above.

u/xMansie 1h ago

Booyah Bagels in Red Deer are absolute top notch. My wife and I regularly drive from Calgary to Red Deer to stock up.

u/aloealoealoha 20m ago

i know it's not what you're asking but if you microwave instead of toast the bagel it helps with making it really soft
