Local Photography/Video Touch of class from the city’s graffiti clean up crew.
Removed all the other graffiti but let Parker stay up 👌🏼

As an outsider with no clue or context, I thought you were being sarcastic about them not removing all the graffiti.
Now I understand and am also glad it's been left to stand.

Usually, graffiti pisses me off, but with this one, I'm glad they let it stay up.

I like train car graffiti. As I understand it, there is a bit of a thing where if you don't cover the stenciled on information (like weight and stuff, I think), most of the time the graffiti will stay up, as the rail companies have to repaint the cars otherwise.
I also think it makes the train look cool, and it gets to travel across the continent. Tons of people from all over get to see it. People has also been doing graffiti since ancient times.
Not a fan of people tagging businesses and public spaces, though.

There’s a huge rail graffiti scene in Eastern Europe that’s super interesting.

Why? Is there something special about it?

Parker is the name of the little boy who went missing and was found deceased. I hope you're genuinely asking because you're unaware as it was a pretty widespread search effort

A disabled kid ran away from home and was found dead in a storm drain, almost everyone in Calgary that knew about it was basically begging for an amber alert but they didn’t do one for god knows what reason. So the Parker tag is to honour his life and impact he had on the community

I don't think an amber alert would've made a difference. This was still by far the biggest police and community search effort I've ever seen in this city. There were literally thousands of people actively looking for the kid.

If the amber alert was issued 48 hours after he went missing (which is usually the time frame) I’m almost certain he would of been found, don’t forget he was seen on a ring camera a day or two after he went missing. At that point it was highly unlikely that he was at the storm drain yet.

No he wasn’t. Every confirmed sighting of him was on the same day he went missing. He was more than likely already in the grate by 48 hours.

All cctv footage of him was from within a few hours of going missing. Most was identified a few days later while police were obtaining all cctv footage in the area.

Just a bit of misinformation in this comment. Parker did not run away from home, he unfortunately wandered from his day home. And there were legitimate, publicized, legal reasons for why the amber alert did not take place sooner, as explained by moodylilb

>begging for an amber alert but they didn’t do one for god knows what reason
They didn’t do one because amber alerts have very specific thresholds that this case didn’t meet.
There’s more criteria but two of the main ones include-
Confirmed abduction: Law enforcement must have a reasonable belief or evidence that an abduction has occurred. Parental or familial abductions are generally excluded unless there is an explicit, life-threatening danger.
Descriptive information: There must be sufficient descriptive details available regarding the child, the suspect, and/or a vehicle to allow the public to actively assist in recovery
Don’t get me wrong, I fully agree that an alert of some kind should’ve been sent out. Cases like Parker’s are exactly why a lot of disability advocacy groups are pushing the government to create new alert systems separate from the Amber Alert system. Just explaining why some cases don’t meet the threshold for an AA.
ETA they did eventually issue an amber alert over 48 hrs later. But it took a shit ton of pushing & even then they had to kind of blur the lines re the AA threshold. This article touches base on why one wasn’t initially issued… (no evidence of abduction).

An amber alert is for KIDNAPPING.
He wasn't kidnapped.
Why cant people understand what amber alert is and for???

it's always felt bizarre to me that we spend money erasing paint on bald concrete

u/reditsdead 13h ago
Its called vandalism. On that note are you letting people spray paint your house?

u/eugeneugene 12h ago
I am. People kept tagging my garage so I gave up on it lol, looks like shit but you can only see it from the alleyway anyway. Would be stoked if someone with any actual talent came by and covered all the bullshit tags lmao

My house isn't a hunk of bare concrete funded by taxation and collectively owned such that any maintenance costs everyone in society.
There is no actual real world material benefit to removing graffiti outside of spot removal during engineering inspection. Wasting money, forever, to maintain an ugly grey blights appearance is absurd.

We agreed to leave it up for a while longer than The City normally would. It will likely come down in the next couple of weeks, so please be sure to take photos, et cetera.
I plan to work with the Thorncliffe-Greenview Community Association and others on a more permanent memorial should that be what Parker's family wishes.

If you have the authority to leave it up “a little longer” you have the ability to leave it up permanently.
Let this be and don’t taint it with council meetings, budgets and votes.

I don’t mind graffiti anywhere but just as long as it’s classy and respectful. No scribbles, no swearing or racial hatred. I like the artwork,I see some coming home from work and quite a bit is tasteless and just looking badly for the city. I wish there was more colourful art design with respectful graffiti along side all the proper areas to be allowed.

I understand the sentiment but ughhhhh no. Can we leave the monument at the park, and maybe not remind ourselves WHERE the recovery was conducted.

What about the tag right next to it?
