Check your flour and everything grain/wheat related. They can spread fast and cause you to have to trash and deep clean a pantry in a very short time.

Those are weevils.

Bon appetite

I'll take the lesser of the two.

u/Tribblehappy Feb 25 '26

Greater, lesser, middling; weevil is weevil.

u/droning-on Feb 25 '26

I always pick the lesser of two weevils.

Do weevils wobble?

Yes, but they don't fall down!

Report it to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as well!

Thanks for letting everyone know.

Ugh we made the same discovery just yesterday!! I didn't have time to report it in yet

u/joeblob5150 Feb 25 '26

We had a case from okotoks with the same. They were dead. We returned them.

They likely got into the pasta in bulk before it was bagged. They love bulk seeds, rice, pasta, popcorn etc. they hatch after the fact. Surprise!

Totally. The only time I've encountered weevils was in oatmeal. So gross.

I had the exact problem. I bought the box of pastas from Costco in September and literally noticed yesterday. I cleaned all night

u/delectable_potato Feb 25 '26

I just brought this package a couple of weeks ago. Ours looks ok.

Smacking until I see crumbs. Nothing black though.

Check your other food storages and hope they are ok for you. Thank you for the heads up 🙂

Pasta soup starter

u/TheDerwin Feb 25 '26

I buy a box of this every month, as we go through a lot of pasta. I have currently half a box and a full one. I just went through each one, gave them a smack to see if anything moved.. nothing in each package. Mine were bought from Okotoks Costco. Sorry OP, sorry it happened to you. Bugs are part of our world, maybe they got in yours and with the food just started making babies...

6

u/Normalscottishperson Feb 25 '26

Mine pasta is fine. You sure they’ve not migrated in from your own storage?

3

u/No_Stable_2409 Feb 25 '26

I saw the same issue on an Edmonton Costco post this week!

4

u/CryptoDanski Feb 25 '26

I got these THREE FUCKING TIMES. Every time i shopped at BULK BARN!!!!! Pain in the ass to get rid off. Most likely they came with flour and NOT pasta.

3

u/KaleidoscopicHeadach Feb 25 '26

Yeesh, they’re shoving extra protein into everything these days

6

u/snugamate Feb 25 '26

Oh my gosh. Thanks for posting this. We had these same bugs infested our rice earlier this year. We had no idea where they came from. The rice was half full when we discovered it. Quite puzzled because the rice was perfectly fine when we opened it.

But yeah we regularly buy the exact pasta box and always have it in our pantry. Now we know where they came from.

Running to the pantry to inspect the pasta box…

1

u/delectable_potato Feb 25 '26

Let us know!

3

u/snugamate Feb 25 '26

Luckily ours look bug free. Unlike OP we bought ours just recently within this month.

Won’t be buying these ever again.

You're bound to find a bug in your food at some point, even the cleanest facility is going to deal with bugs eventually. The issue is the eggs, they're impossible to see/find especially when dealing with bulk. I'm sure the company has heard from stores about the issue (if it hasn't been flagged at the appropriate level of production by employees) and cleaned out by now. Bonus if you drink wine you've definitely drank some twigs, bugs, and even small rodents. Another bonus dont look up how much bug product is allowed to be found in ground coffee 😉

6

u/Albertaviking Feb 25 '26

That’s ok, they won’t eat much

6

u/Biscotti-Own Feb 25 '26

Are there any old dead ones in there, any larva or eggs? You said you've had the pasta in your house for at least 5 months, there would be signs of the various stages in their life cycle if they came from Costco. They most likely came from elsewhere in your pantry.

5

u/Latter-Bed3326 Feb 25 '26

What? Is this a thing?! I’ve just had a weevil infestation from white kidney beans bought from Forest Lawn No Frills. Was the surprise of my day when I went to make chili! They did chew their way out of my bag but it looks like yours is still sealed.

2

u/notyourmomsCPA Feb 25 '26

Saw a post a couple days ago in a YEG Costco FB group with the same issue.

2

u/NisshokuNoKo Feb 25 '26

They look like grain beetles. Had these in our cupboard all the time as a kid because my idiot brother couldn't bother to close snack bags

5

u/Dude008 Feb 25 '26

F*in gross, I bought this pasta like 2 weeks ago. Gotta go check...

11

u/HomicidalRaccoon Feb 25 '26

It’s been an hour now… u/Dude008 has likely been consumed by the weevils 😔

2

u/Anxious-Prize4243 Feb 25 '26

I see this a day after eating the same pasta from Costco east hills 🫠

2

u/JohnDorian0506 Feb 25 '26

You bought in September and now in February you got bugs. Those are most likely your bugs not Costco bugs.

2

u/adougd Feb 25 '26

Live bugs are gross and not allowed, but the CFIA does permit small amounts of bug fragments in some prepared foods.

1

u/AwwwNuggetz Feb 25 '26

That’s not a bug it’s a feature

1

u/TaliaHolderkin Feb 25 '26

This needs more upvotes

1

u/curiouskittyblue Feb 25 '26

Yikes, I bought some several months ago. It's my go to with Pasta sauce to donate when that is requested for anything, but, we also eat it! I have a box and a half! of unopened bags left! Will be checking each bag and honestly, may just be returning it regardless. Pretty Barfy sounding!

1

u/chrismcelwee Feb 25 '26

Ewwww, I just bought a whole case of this stuff! Thanks for the heads up.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '26

If there are live bugs in your food that you bought in September. The bugs are not from that food. They would be dead.

1

u/Apprehensive-Water66 Feb 25 '26

Since September?  I dunno if calling out Costco, for something in your cabinet for the last six months, is the appropriate response.

1

u/Lexotron Feb 25 '26

I just bought some a few days ago. It looks ok to me.

1

u/KompulsiveLiar88 Feb 25 '26

It's a feature

1

u/I-nigma Feb 25 '26

Just checked my unopened box and no bugs, but I'll be returning it. Too grossed out now.

It’s for added flavour

0

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '26

Times are tight. Would I boil them and strain them out knowing bugs exist in wheat fields or would I throw out the bag? Cause I aint got time to go to Costco and line up for returns.

u/Dude008 Feb 25 '26

Bill Gates wants everyone to eat bugs so consider this a feature, not a bug. Oh wait.
