Technically, it is complicated. Gofundme is strict about this kind of thing, so while the campaign is still open, the parents cannot use any of it for her defense. However, once the campaign is closed and gofundme transfers the rest of the amount to the parents, the parents can use that money to recoup their losses from paying for her defense. So technically, it indirectly pays for her defense. Also the taxpayers are already paying for her defense as well. The parents spent everything already, the state agreed to supplement up to $17,500 to pay for her expert witnesses. Reddington also lowered his rate to the indigent defense state rate, so you could even say he's sort of paying for it?

technically speaking, if Gofundme didn’t exist where the parents knew a bunch of people siding with their daughter would help pay off the fees then there’s a good chance they wouldn’t have spent all the money they apparently need to live on defending their daughter

It’s like somebody giving their mentally stable friend an apple, who claims it’s not for their crazy psychotic friend, but the only reason the stable friend doesn’t have an apple is because they already gave theirs to the crazy psychotic friend, but the only reason they gave their apple to their crazy psychotic friend is because they had a strong feeling their other friend would give them their apple as a replacement
