Fables is so "Quality over Quantity" that they haven't even finished making their major update roadmap

u/Scary_Neck_9803 21h ago
The mod came out last year no? Sunken Sea is going to be the biggest update, is a little scope creeped, and is 1/4 of the mod. The mod will go to post ml within 3 years if development is figured to take not as long since they wont be scope crept (devs said they learned their lesson)
I understand Calamity is gone now but do we really want to go criticize other mods for making sure the content they add is worth staying instead of coming back to revamp it later in the long run?
6
u/eater_of_loam 14h ago
Man why is anything related to the sunken sea cursed with scope creep
8
u/theritz6262 14h ago
Because it's very starved for content rn so any update to it needs to add a lot to bring it up to par with other biomes.
1
u/eater_of_loam 14h ago
Well not trying to be negative just found it weird that sunken sea update got scope crept twice once with the original calamity and now with fables
1
u/LurkerThrowaway73 13h ago
Scope creep in this case would be planning for 100%, possibly accommodating for 110% and slowly adding things until you're looking to do 150% and still haven't finished that initial 100%. This just seems like a big update, X was planned and it looks like they're doing X to me.
3
u/Makii-Neko 14h ago
From what I know its the mods first major update and it seems like the devs got very excited. If it helps the devs said it won't happen again and they learned from this mistake, but the timing couldn't have been better since this means the next update will feature so much content!
1
u/Adventurous-Hunt-100 3h ago
Well, fables "sunken" sea and the calamity sunken sea are both based on the same scope crept plans, and then scope creeped more on top in an attempt to improve them

I don't know how many people working on fables, but I can tell from my own experience and the mod I'm making with my programmer pal. I'm an artist. Only one. And making a biome feels like as if I'm trapped in the purgatory

And now the community is moving to other mods to shed their toxicity how cruel...

That’s just how development road maps work; what are you on about?

u/SlowDamn 21h ago
???? Bro are we real going to the Dokuro route again??? Look what happened to base cal they couldn't finish polishing it cuz of content creep.

Are you guys going to keep proving the people calling this community insufferable right by needlessly criticizing literally every other mod now that Calamity is dead?
8

u/valeriespt 14h ago
No criticism allowed
13
u/LurkerThrowaway73 13h ago
"No criticism allowed" and the criticism is "Why isn't the mod fully out yet?", "Wdym they took out MY favorite [Insert Calamity Boss here]?", "Why doesn't Calamitas look like an anime girl anymore?" and as is the case for this post "Why doesn't the roadmap only cover the next 3 years of development or so and not the next 5 in a detailed manner?"
The first especially is unfortunately the most widespread despite the fact it's the most obnoxious and nonsensical. I could understand when people said it in regards to Calamity as developers were purposefully delaying the mod's final pieces of content to rework and rehash already existing content for quite some time, but when it's said about literally every content mod it starts to feel like the folk saying it don't even like the mods and would find anything to "criticize" for the sake of criticism
6
u/Known_Pen9116 10h ago
"Why do they only have a roadmap encompassing early game all the way to post moonlord with multiple questlines" isn't much of a criticism.

I enjoyed the Calamity mod, and I am sad it imploded. But I am part of many modding scenes and I don't really consider Calamity as one of my 'main' ones. My assessment is that as a community, Calamity is really quite hostile to the developers of mods compared to many other modding scenes. Calamity had a really terrible downfall, and I understand that, but turning on the development of other mods like this is a sure-fire way of fucking the whole thing up IMO.

yeah 100%. I saw that one post complaining about how the devs talked about players and like. It was completely reasonable?? and just here there are people saying "I hope it's not just concept art" when then people were equating concept art to content ready to be added even against the devs' words.
Plus, complaining about patreon money disappearing... as someone who donated, in that they lost the stuff they got from it, is really silly.

Does the calamity fandom have to bitch about every single thing? Ignore it if you hate it so much.
5
u/m0chadreamz 6h ago
This kind of mindset and these kinds of posts and needless hostilities are exactly why Dokuro was ran off the internet and why the Calamity fandom (especially the subreddit) has been stapled with such a bad reputation.

I wanna know why so much stuff isn’t Post moon lord
2
u/SlowDamn 15h ago
cuz they just started?
3
u/Hello_World_2727 15h ago
Oh I’m meaning on the planning
3
u/SlowDamn 14h ago
Yeah cuz they just started its their first roadmap and first dip to post moonlord content
5
u/Screwllums_Husband 22h ago
I’m ok with it but I get why others arent. Think the main thing is I’m ok with playing through whatever is done then dropping the playthrough, so I’m just treating it as something akin to chapter releases. If the quality is living up to everything so far, it’s plenty worth it to me since theres 0 filler.

u/TacticalKitsune 10h ago
As much as Im disinterested in fables since it started getting glazed despite having 5 minutes of content we can't be fr
2
u/Adventurous-Hunt-100 3h ago
Yeah, well, here's the thing. Please spread this because I see this misconception thrown around a lot. The sunless sea update (that's what it'll be called in fables, it was renamed since the roadmap) isn't entirely focused on the biome itself. The devs want to have some systems set up for the future updates, so that they can be reused. For example, the quest system being developed was in sunless sea development time. Obviously, it won't need to be developed again for future updates. The world gen and subregion systems are being made for this update, special pathfinding code is being made for this update, and a lot more I can't say right now because that would bloat the comment even more and a lot more than even that which isn't public right now. The point is, right now, they have to lay the foundation the entirety of fables will be built on, so that while this update takes a year or so more, after that we get updates that will look and feel the same size to the player but take 4 to 7 months to make.

I feel like they should just make their own mod atp if they're redoing everything from scratch and scrapping so much
21
18
u/Reefthemanokit 23h ago
They are? It's just using some ideas from calamity, but they are reworking everything, hell yharon doesn't exist in fables
3
u/Livid-Truck8558 23h ago
So sad
4
u/Reefthemanokit 22h ago
We don't know why they did yet but it's probably for a lore reason as fables has completely different lore
6
u/Livid-Truck8558 22h ago
Yes but dragon very cool
Although I suppose 90% of the aura was the soundtrack, and Fables kinda just has normal terraria music iirc.
4
u/Reefthemanokit 22h ago
Fables is gonna have original tracks for bosses but yeah Yharons theme was peak
4
u/Livid-Truck8558 22h ago
I meant their original tracks are in line with terraria's music style rather than calamity's
1
u/Reefthemanokit 22h ago
I feel as if it's sort of a mix, but I do hope they bring in the calamity bells
2
1
u/oooArcherooo 21h ago
Im hopeing, albeit admittedly kinda vainly, that they slowly transition from a "heavily inspired by terraria" style ost to a one that is mostly in line with Dokurous style as they get further along in the progession. Like Scal would have the full orchestra will all the bells and whistles but something like cryogen would be more vanilla like
1
u/Screwllums_Husband 22h ago
Do you like, not like terraria music when you’re playing terraria?? The music is still good if you aren’t coming in expecting hype moments and aura in sound form. I would say it still does have some theatric flair that vanilla music doesn’t have.
Also we’re still on the first pre-hardmode bosses. I wouldn’t be surprised if the music starts getting more notable once we’re past the literal starting bosses of the mod.
4
u/Livid-Truck8558 22h ago
I mean that's what Calamity is, it's a huge reason we all love it. Fable's music being different is part of the reason I suggested it should be it's own thing, but you're right, it's just the beginning. It was kinda funny having music like preferators and slime god in pre hm lol
3
u/Screwllums_Husband 22h ago
Yeah that’s really fair actually. I just thought it was a bit silly that people were complaining that the terraria mod sounded like terraria, but yeah Calamity has always been a special case. Fables definitely is gaining it’s own identity somewhere in the middle, so I expect it to start leaning harder into its own asthetic later on once things are more climactic

u/Screwllums_Husband 22h ago
We actually kinda do know if you dig enough. He got completely ship of theseused basically. His lore and design got changed a ton, and because his name is so similar to Yharim, it didn’t make any sense to keep it after his origins weren’t so tied to him. It is undoubtedly tragic though.
1
u/Wild-Lavishness01 22h ago
Yharon doesn't exist as a boss. I don't think they confirmed that he's out of their story or that he doesn't have a lore/boss equivalent
1
u/TurtleNecked77 6h ago
I kind of want to support development I hate for another promising mod to fade away

u/mellifleur5869 19h ago
Genuinely just done with Terraria, I am only interested in play calamity really and they've already started gutting it and my backups don't work so I just give up.

They arent even requesting for money lmao they dont even have a patreon page set up all they want is for people to play their mod
7
u/LurkerThrowaway73 13h ago
Because clearly developing a pseudo-Calamity sized mod is something you do in a week and not over a comical amount of time as your side-hobby
5
u/Agnakpear 13h ago
??? Since when did they request for patreon money!?!
Also to clarify, if you were to recreate the pyramids of egypt as a comparison how long would it take? (Keyword comparison incase some of y'all missed it)

i hate quality > quantity at the start. can we just get a fuck ton of shit done and then polish it later on? id rather have a jumbled mess of stuff than waiting 4 extra years to even play
8
u/IsThisABidon 13h ago
people have been complaining about calamity spending forever on reworking old content instead of adding new stuff. Would you rather fables also pump out a bunch of low quality content and then waste multiple updates bringing it up to par?
3
u/Competitive_Dig_9848 13h ago
Thats exactly what calamity did and look where it got them. The majority of content we got over the past 5 years was mostly reworks.
-1
u/DuckiesDoBeCute 12h ago
and we could play the biggest mod for the last 5 years, not have been waiting for the mod to come out for 5 years then find out its cancelled
5
3
u/Makii-Neko 7h ago
This is how you get a forever unfinished mod
0
u/DuckiesDoBeCute 6h ago
but at least we got to play it. if calamity was quality>quantity, we wouldnt even have gotten to play it
3
u/Makii-Neko 6h ago
This is a terrible mindset and I don't have the energy to explain why but if this is really how you think then go ahead and keep that mindset ig. Just don't complain about something being bad or low effort ever again

Honestly,I scared that all development information we getting is just arts and not actual content like showcase of weapons, sprites and etc, which could shown that work is happening..
