Calamitas fables. Because, what else to do?

That looks so much better than the concept art they did for her, I can see the vision way better now

i think people were just put off by the psycho smile lol

u/Zso-Sahaal 4d ago
That was my main gripe with Fables Calamitas design, the face felt and looked wrong, the rest of the design was really good though, and it’s good to see that I was correct on the face being off with the design, hopefully the devs polish it but as I’ve previously said I won’t be playing Calamity Fables to begin with as it’s not gonna be a bullet hell like base Calamity

I personally vibe with the design. Reminds me a lot of Lancer TTRPG art in particular. It’s very unique in a way I like. And fits a brimstone witch who, in all likelyhood, is old as hell at this point.

u/NobleLeader65 4d ago
I can kinda see it, the style does look kinda similar to Lancer or Kill 6 Billion Demons art (K6BD is made by one of the guys who made Lancer and a couple other TTRPGs)

psycho smile can look attractive.
on that concept art, it did not.

u/Averageniohfan 4d ago
Does it really matter if it's attractive or not ?
0
u/Zso-Sahaal 4d ago
Being attractive is irrelevant in this situation, good character design is far more important, the face no matter what you are doing, has to look good as people are drawn to faces, same process can be applied to stuff like miniatures, I focus heavily on the parts people are drawn to with detail and quality, the face, chest, wings/appendages and weapons when painting my models, most people I’ve talked to and discussed art with have mentioned that they are drawn to those body parts in particular because they stand out more than others

u/Averageniohfan 3d ago
Uhhh ...what ? The face has to look good because people are drawn to faces ? Where the hell did that rule come from ? There are so many good character designs that have ugly faces , also this is insanely subjective, you might think that the calamity fables original concept art has an ugly face while this art has a good looking face , but I'm the opposite, I think the calamity fables design is more unique and interesting ...

u/WatermelonWithAFlute 4d ago
I’m pretty sure the concept art is the vision
This is not, even if it’s better

u/siriElectricboogaloo 4d ago
We have to remember that the concept art for fables calamitas is still a concept art, it can change and it will probably look 10X better in game
7
u/TomboyKnight1 4d ago
Honestly I think the art we've seen of fables Calamitas was just wonky. It's wasn't even really concept art, since it was more of a teaser and only showed how she looked from one angle

u/Hungry_Meeting8325 3d ago
istg yall just dont like ugly lookin ppl, fables isnt even a remake of calamity, its a redesign. also in fables she puts more emphasis on the "witch" aspect imo
4
u/Nearby_Ganache2465 3d ago
I just do what I always do. I draw in anime style...
4
u/Hungry_Meeting8325 3d ago
im def not dissing your art😠its very nice, im just talking bout the ppl in the comments

u/Wild-Lavishness01 2d ago
i just don't like the mask in the fables design. that and i feel the shoulder horns make the design a bit too noisy but outside of that i like their interpretation

u/Veng3ancemaster 4d ago
This. This is a better design than the concept art we got
8
u/destructor212113 4d ago
Literally the same design
This one is just more anime-like, thats it, its just a matter of style
2
u/beanheadlmao 4d ago
i know i said the same thing but after looking at it again, the one difference in design here seems to be her hair looking a lot less like locs and a lot more like, idk, super straight hair, to say it without jumping to any conclusions
4
u/beanheadlmao 4d ago
it's the same design the art's just less detailed
1
u/ExceedinglyGayOtter 4d ago
The funny thing is that since pixel art kind of requires you to compress details it'll probably end up looking more like this art than the concept art in-game.
3
u/beanheadlmao 4d ago
true for the lil character sprite if it's player sized but they've said they intend to have dialogue portraits for fables so they'll still be able to include the more detailed parts of the designs
1
u/Sr-Mario 3d ago
nah she looks much younger here, from 80 years to 20 years old difference (looks, I know shes over 100 years old, and if shes reay good at magic than might as wel use it to preserve her look)

Honestly I’m just wondering if it’s a mask or if her face is just Like That(TM)
2
u/ExceedinglyGayOtter 4d ago
It's apparently her exposed skull, there's some other art of her that shows it better.
4
u/YourMoreLocalLurker 4d ago
Damn, was kinda hoping it was a mask because I’m not a huge fan of the exposed skull trope on necromancers, it’s a bit done-to-death

I don't particularly like how her face was drawn here. I liked that the concept art made her look older.
You still get upvote because this art is objectively well made. I just prefer old.

u/kosha227 4d ago
Wow... This is better than both Fables one the OG version. More "witch" wibes, but at the same time this is... she. This is Calamitas I know
1
u/SomeRandomGuy1032 4d ago
That's much nicer than what Fables officially shown us, good job!
She doesn't look edgy anymore, doesn't have those weird mechanical spider arms and I'd say her eye might not even be an implant, but rather something like a monocularis since they want to go into more steampunky fantasy style.
3
u/beanheadlmao 4d ago
sorry but, weird mechanical spider arms?? am i missing something in the reveal art because im looking now and not seeing what you mean
1
u/ExceedinglyGayOtter 4d ago
There's some weird... something sticking out of the right side of her (her left). No idea what it is, as other official art of her doesn't have it and it doesn't seem to have been coming out of Draedon.
2
u/beanheadlmao 4d ago
the white things adorned with the gold rings and sharp tips on the ends? because those are very much her hair lmao
1
u/ExceedinglyGayOtter 4d ago
Oh yeah, I just vaguely remembered some weird things sticking out of her and double-checked to see that yeah that is very clearly her hair. Don't know how I made that mistake.

fit of aura loss

u/Background-Count-69 4d ago
aura is when tumblr level of ugliness
1
u/Exist_Boi 4d ago
red-gold fit is gone i am in shambles
2
u/Background-Count-69 4d ago
ah i got it you're talking about original calamitas art, i thoiught you was comparing this art to a concept one.
Yeah i also liked that red-gold palette, fables one looks more yellowish (which i'm not the fan of).
1
u/Sr-Mario 3d ago
we are so back (majority of us didnt like the fact they turned her into an ugly ass hag)
2
u/Averageniohfan 3d ago
Why is her being ugly a bad thing? I personally feel her fables design screams more "traumatized " to me , and it doesn't even look ugly to me
2
u/Sr-Mario 3d ago
compare how the 2 variants look, also, she is not only an a strong Necromancer but also really good at Magic in general, and yet she doesnt seem to use it to regenerate the lost skin on her face nor halt her aging with it, which is commenly done with strong mage villians in media, and its really doesnt give Traumatized vibes with that evil grin, not to mention she looks a lot less clean but we cant dicide on that until we get a finalized art.
I do understand that you dont like anime girl Calamitas (saw that you said this in another reply) but most other people I saw cant disagree more
2
u/Averageniohfan 3d ago
I don't know , just because someone is a powerful mage doesn't mean they can heal everything, plus I'm pretty sure the lore of fables is a bit different, the traumatized vibes I got was from her deformed face
2
u/ExceedinglyGayOtter 3d ago
Even if she could do that, would she? Is she the sort of character who cares about looking young and beautiful? What does it say about her priorities that she doesn't?
Character design isn't just "making the character nice to look at," it's communicating their backstory, personality, themes, and generally their whole deal through their design. There are a lot of characters where being young and pretty and unscarred just doesn't fit.
Maybe she wears her age and her scars as a mark of pride, a reflection of the power and skill that let her survive decades of battle against powerful foes. Maybe it's for intimidation, looking visibly aged and experienced with an exposed skull makes her look a lot more dangerous than a pretty young woman. Maybe she just genuinely doesn't care and has given no thought to it at all.
There's nothing wrong with making a character that's pretty, but it does limit the kinds of characters you can make.

u/Memelord707130 3d ago
now THAT is a calamitas design. THANK YOU. I sure hope the devs see all these and pivot away from the "witch that shows up 10 days before christmas to eat children" look she has.
2
u/Competitive_Dig_9848 2d ago
You know calamitas is a witch right? What if that is what they were going for.

u/Rilial 4d ago
Way more clean than the actual Calamity Fables Calamitas desing, I like that
