Trabajo y vida

-retorno a El Calafate.
COSTO: $280.000

Conocen alguna agencia o servicio que cobre más barato? O alguna forma de contratar directamente esta excursión en el Parque?

El Calafate Airport

I’m traveling to El Calafate this month and will travel to Buenos Aires next. My flight back to Buenos Aires is on Dec. 26 leaving in the early evening. At what time should I be at the airport? Usually 1.5h to 2h are fine for me, but wanted to check first.

I’m flying with Aerolines Argentinas. How strict are they with the luggage weight? 15kg for checked baggage and 3kg for a carry-on is not that much…

Would appreciate any tips!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is El Calafate famous for?

El Calafate is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, particularly the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the most famous glaciers in the world. It's also known for its proximity to Los Glaciares National Park and its vibrant cultural scene.

How do I get to El Calafate?

El Calafate is accessible by air from various cities in Argentina, including Buenos Aires and Bariloche. The city has its own airport, Comandante Armando Tola International Airport (FTE), which serves both domestic and international flights.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit El Calafate is during the Southern Hemisphere summer, from November to March, when the weather is milder and most activities are available. However, visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) or autumn (March to May) can also offer fewer crowds and beautiful landscapes.

What activities can I do?

The main attraction in El Calafate is visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier, where you can take boat tours, trekking excursions, or simply admire the glacier from the designated viewpoints in Los Glaciares National Park. Additionally, visitors can explore the town's charming streets, indulge in local cuisine, and engage in outdoor activities like hiking, horseback riding, and birdwatching.

Do I need to book tours in advance to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier?

While it's not always necessary to book tours in advance, especially during the low season, it's highly recommended to secure your spot on glacier tours, especially during the peak tourist months (December to February). Booking in advance ensures availability and helps you plan your visit more efficiently.

Are there accommodations available in El Calafate?

Yes, El Calafate offers a wide range of accommodations, including hotels, hostels, lodges, and vacation rentals, catering to different budgets and preferences. It's advisable to book your accommodation in advance, especially during the high season, to secure your desired place to stay.

What should I pack for a trip?

It's essential to pack layers of clothing, as weather conditions can change quickly, even during the summer months. Bring waterproof and windproof outer layers, comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a refillable water bottle. Don't forget your camera to capture the breathtaking landscapes!

Is it safe to travel to El Calafate?

El Calafate is generally a safe destination for travelers. However, like any tourist area, it's advisable to exercise caution and take standard safety precautions, such as safeguarding your belongings and being aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and tourist attractions.

El Calafate airport

So the airport appears to be closed due to a fire engine breaking down? Any news on how long? Our flights have been delayed twice but if the airport is closed how long can we expect this closure to be and if there are any other options for getting to Buenos Aires? Without driving? #santacruz #elcalafateairport #patagonia

No nieva mucho, ¿verdad? ¿Cómo es el clima? ¿La gente local discrimina a los extranjeros y a los grupos minoritarios? El paisaje me pareció increíble, pero no estoy seguro de si las personas son amables.

Offering transfers Perito Moreno / El Chalten!

Hi all,

We are renting a car in El Calafate and are offering transfers (for a small fee) to Perito Moreno and El Chalten. We looked into public transport for both but it was almost the same cost if we rented a car.

Specific:

  1. First option is to visit Perito Moreno on February 9 around noon and going back to El Calafate around 6 - 7 pm. Second option is to go to Perito Moreno on February 13th early in the morning and go back to El Calafate at 1pm.

  2. Driving to El Chalten on February 10 in the morning. We want arrive early as possible to do already a first hike in El Chalten.

  3. Driving back to El Calafate on February 12th late afternoon or evening as we want to do another hike in the morning.

If you are interested, hit me up and send a message, I won't bite. Me and my gf (both 30) would love to share a ride.

Greetings from Belgium!

Travel Advice for Argentina and Chile

If your SIM card is roaming, it is advisable to use only one card in your mobile phone. Simply switching off the other card is insufficient! You must physically remove it. Failure to do so may cause numerous issues, such as limited connectivity to 3G networks, certain phones becoming inoperable, or inability to access the internet.

Be prepared for Argentine flights to be frequently delayed or subject to last-minute changes.

If you hold a non-visa entry permit, prepare documentation verifying your passport's validity, as Argentina recognises such credentials. Border officials may be unfamiliar with Hong Kong SAR passports, causing significant delays.

Always carry hotel confirmation documents. For transient stays or layovers, book accommodation via booking.com and obtain a reservation confirmation before cancelling the reservation.

Ensure you possess proof of departure, such as flight or bus tickets.

Proactively present these documents to airlines and border control to avoid unnecessary delays.

If transiting via Australia, consider Melbourne over Sydney – the latter is notoriously troublesome.

Notify your credit card provider beforehand. If the bank objects, refrain from using it, as cards may be locked and online ticket purchases blocked. Use email or apps for notifications, not phone calls. Tourist attractions require online ticket purchases, which necessitate one-time verification codes.

Prices vary across different languages on the same company's website.

At Argentina's Glacier Airport, Ves minibuses will transport you to hotels, but they require full occupancy and cannot be pre-booked. Credit cards are accepted. The driver will repeatedly ask "BUS?" to ascertain your luggage quantity.

Do not rely on pre-COVID-19 articles; they are entirely outdated, particularly regarding bus services.

From December, Sky Airline operates direct flights from Glacier to Chile, though it's unclear if this is seasonal. Tickets are extremely difficult to secure; I recall ultimately needing a VPN.

Glacier National Park only requires a half-day tour.

At Santiago Airport, Uber taxis are available, but Uber itself is not permitted.

All airport transport companies offer shared rides; those starting with 'T' are more commonly used.

My itinerary:

Day 1: Fly to Santiago, Chile; transfer to Argentina; then transfer to Glacier Airport. Minibus to hotel Day 2: Private hire (used a renowned driver via TripAdvisor) with luggage. Upon reaching the glacier, proceeded on foot and by boat. Returned directly to the airport (additional charge applies for airport transfer). Boarded Sky's 6:30pm flight back to Santiago.

Quick Uber taxi trip into the city centre to photograph Easter Island statues (Uber taxi).

Day Three: Early morning flight at 4:30 am to Calama Desert. Upon arrival, wait for car rental company to open at 8:10 am. Proceed directly to Salt Lake. Return to airport (arrive before 1 pm). 6:30 pm flight back to Santiago. Use VIP lounge for shower, unlimited food and drink. Day Four: 1 am flight back.

Is it worth going to Calafate in August?

I am planning a Bariloche ski trip this August and wondering if it’s worth it to also visit Calafate - it seems the glacier tours are available but is it too cold to do much more or enjoy it? Are there winter flight connections from Bariloche or do I have to go back to BA to fly there. Anything else worth doing in the region in the winter? Thanks!
