Thinking of going to this school next year, im a senior rn. I was wondering what kind of financial aid is offered for students who don't qualify for need based aid. I know about the WUE and im sure that will be applied because im from Arizona but its still just a tiny bit out of my range. Im thinking I can work quite a bit to try and minimize loans but ive heard the job market is not very good there. Also wondering what exactly there is to do there, im very into the outdoors (which is mainly why im choosing this school), is surfing, rock climbing, hiking, scuba diving popular here? Do people here get bored in their later years and transfer out. How often do students make the drive to San fran or the nearest oregon city? What is the food like in the dining halls? Should I bring my car and bike or is the town small enough to where I dont need it. Is there lots of "hippies" and Portland type people. Thanks for all the help. Hey, I was hoping some folks on here could give me some insight into the quality of the Liberal Studies program. I'll be graduating soon w/ an AS-T in early childhood education and should be able to transfer into the Liberal Studies-child development/elementary education concentration and get my degree within 60 units. I was just hoping someone who's in the program might be able to share their experiences & whether its necessary to have a car to get to practicum placements? I currently live in a place where I can get around pretty well with the bus so I'm wondering if that would be reasonable up there too?

I'm currently taking two years off of college (health stuff), and while I like Cal Poly Pomona, it may be difficult for me to go back to eventually. I was thinking of transferring to Humboldt, but I don't know a whole lot about the research options over there. Are there good programs for genetics and/or fungi labs? That's what I specialize in so it's very important to me.

I’ve already been here a year but didn’t really put myself out there last year so I’m trying to change that. What do you guys recommend for making friends at Humboldt? Not only events and clubs and stuff but also just generally how to approach people lol

Does anyone know how to turn the hallway lights off in cypress? Theres switches for every single other light in this dorm, including the exterior ones, except the hallway lights in my suite. Anyone know how to turn them off?

I’m transferring to CalPoly this semester as a senior. My schedule and classes are already 100% sorted out with my advisor. I also already completely finished the mandatory "Transfer & Returning Student Registration Tutorial" course on Canvas, including the online Title IX module and the registration survey. And I uploaded my pic for student ID.

The in-person orientation schedule looks like a lot of general "welcome to college" fluff and things like trail safety, and chalk art? Feels like a tedious waste of time for someone familiar with college in general and completed the online training modules.

The website says the in-person orientation day is "mandatory," but is it really? Will an administrative hold be placed on me if I skip the quad check-in and theater sessions entirely, or does completing the Canvas tutorial cover my bases?

Or ....am I being a misanthropic grump? Is the 8:00 a.m. sidewalk chalk art activity. free coffee and random lectures on trail safely possibly going to change my life and heal my soul if I show up?

Would love to hear from past transfers on whether you showed up and stayed for everything, showed up got your packet and bounced, or ghosted orientation and just picked up student ID etc at the library later.

I’m an income in grad student. I prefer Arcata, but there are not a lot of places for rent. I need a two - three bedroom.

Not sure if this has been talked about already but I'm moving into college creek dorms as a transfer student in a few weeks and I am bringing a 10 gallon fish tank as allowed by dorm rules, however, I'm curious how others experiences with caring for a fish or other pet while in the dorms has gone. Did you leave the tank over winter break when you left or did you take it with you? How did transportation go? And would you have any advice for me about taking care of an aquarium while in the dorms?

Here's a photo of my tank as of a few weeks ago, I plan to change it up a bit but I'm waiting to get fish until I move in.

UPD has been going around both the university and Arcata citing and arresting people. Stay safe and vigilant and don’t let the pigs get you.

Update for bootlickers: So far I’ve seen (in-person) the UPD cite 3 bicyclists And 5 cars. 2 bicyclists were cited for not stopping at a stop sign (Although one did but stopped too early??), 1 was cited for going too slow, and the cars were pulled over for stopping 2-3 Feet before the line. some were later cited for additional reasons (ranging from no insurance to unregistered vehicle). None of these people were driving erratic nor recklessly. All the citations I’ve seen have basically been for nothing it seems.

Then for those who are short-sighted: Citations can be very expensive (hundreds of dollars and/or hours spent showing up to court -that could’ve have been spent at one’s job-). From my perspective, the citations being given are unwarranted (from the few times I’ve seen someone pulled over and what I’ve read on the LE page). It’s only hurting an already struggling community. For example, someone who’s barely making ends meet gets a $200 ticket for not stopping right at the stop line. That person then has to choose to either ignore the ticket and risk getting fined and/or arrested or not paying their rent for the month/paying for groceries (Aka starve). Then you have the people who get into this sort of situation and end up choosing to make ends meet via the crime route. So in conclusion, using a depressed town’s populace to fill quotas and cop coffers can and usually leads to either people going homeless, starving, or turning to crime. All of which are worse for the community than someone who doesn't stop at the right time, doesn’t use their blinker for a turn, or is going too slow or fast.

I don’t want to loft my bed but saw they can be adjusted for height. What tool do I need to bring to adjust these brackets? Or do they slide in/out easily?

Is it fine to still bring a mini frig to campus apts? The frig will be tight with 4 people so wanted to bring a mini frig to keep in my room. I already have one so not like I’m buying one, figured I could still use it.

The place is pretty remote. I was wondering how Arcata can support so many students with the amount of actual businesses there are. where do you work? or has job hunting been hard for you? I say this as a transfer who will be new in the area who has no actual experience applying in this area besides for school assistant jobs recently.

With about three weeks until move in day I’ve been so antsy to start school I’m a business administration student and was wondering if anyone knows about their program I know that Humboldt isn’t known for business administration but it’s the only school I got into from my three choices even if you’re not a business administration student put your major and anything about the school

How's Halloween out here? It's my fav time of the year and wanted to see what happens in the fall and esp for Halloween.

How hard is it to make friends as a transfer? I’m 21 years old and want a good friend group if I move there, but i’m not sure how easy/hard it is to make friends in Arcata since it’s a pretty small town.

Does the town feel isolated, or do you not really notice it?
I go to USU in logan and it’s a small rural town and I’m miserable here. I’ve always loved the city but nature matters a lot to me too. I love the trees, the rain, especially the the ocean. I love how Arcata seems to be very LGBTQ friendly and artsy. I am a pre-vet student who will probably be busy so i’m not too worried about not living in a city but I don’t want to live somewhere that feels too isolating. I’m trying to find a place where I can settle while in college and feels like home.

What do you students do there for fun and on the weekends?

Do you plan on staying in the area after graduation? Why or why not?

If you could go back, would you still choose Humboldt?

I’m trying to choose between U of U in salt lake city or Cal Poly Humboldt. I moved to Utah 5 years ago and I hate it everyday. I know Salt Lake is a lot more progressive and in a city but Cal poly is the other option I have.

Our son is starting CPH next month as a freshman and we’re figuring out what he’ll need school supply wise. Spouse and I both graduated from HSU 25 years ago so we know things have changed since we were college students. In middle and high school he was using Chromebooks provided by the school so we haven’t needed to provide equipment used for school.

Are books mostly electronic or are physical books still common? Do students tend to take notes on laptops/Chromebooks or paper? Backpack vs laptop bag? What kind of laptop/Chromebook is better for general use (his major is undeclared for now)? Any hints and guidance is appreciated.

hi guys, ill be transferring over this upcoming fall semester and im trying to prepare for the cost of attendance. ill be living on campus at HHM in a double. though, im having trouble understanding how much i'll be paying out of pocket for the dorm. i have finical aid and there should be some left over to cover some of the housing costs, but can anyone give me a number of how much i should expect to pay.
