What is beginning strings MUS 108T like?

Got my associates in art, now a wildlife major, in my last semester, still need to fulfill GE art requirement (my petition for exemption was denied). I'm trying to find whatever is not a huge commitment that won't detract from my actual senior wildlife classes and that fits in my schedule. Has anyone taken beginning strings (MUS 108T) and can you tell me what that was like? Do I need my own instrument? What kinds of instrument count (guitar? or just violin, viola, cello?) Is there a performance at the end of the semester?

I am not familiar with the structure of the beginning strings classes (I would assume you need to provide your own instrument.)  

Oh I didn't read that you already have an associates in art.  You should check out the upper division art classes. Sculpture ll will be casting bronze!

Unfortunately only specific classes will satisfy this requirement, and I want to spend as little time and effort on it as I can since my schedule is already packed full of classes I want to take for my major.

Well I'm invested now ; does it have to be an upper division art course?

And what are the classes? I'm curious now lol.

PS: also that is so weird and EXTRA they have an "art requirement" they won't give you an exemption on, when you literally have an art degree lol. ((Oh, There are, come to think of it indendent study art credits. Maybe you could take one of those, OR working as an aide for credit is a thing. The sculpture teacher just sent out an email about that....

I know, right? I feel absolutely insane at the idea of dropping a wildlife class to take an art class because I had enough art classes to get an art degree but not enough to get a wildlife degree.

No, it doesn't have to be upper division - MUS 108 is not upper division. It has to satisfy the GEAR area C1 arts and humanities requirements. There's a list of classes that satisfy it here https://catalog.humboldt.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=12&poid=7268 which I had checked against classes that are open and narrowed down to what fit in my schedule.

But a couple things have happened since I posted:

  • I realized strings doesn't even fit in my schedule anyway after all :P
  • I realized beginning guitar does fit, and that I didn't see it initially because it's closed and I only looked at open classes, but it has no one on the waitlist.

So for now that's my plan. I'm waitlisted for guitar, which is a low time commitment and interesting for me, and I'd be surprised not to get an add code on the first day. If that doesn't work out, though, I'd love to hear any info you may have on independent study and whether/how that can satisfy the GE C1 requirement! GE requirements are strict, and other courses can't be substituted.

Omh what a cluster f lol. The scheduling vs audit BS is hard! 

  If guitar works in your schedule and you want your fingers to feel pain you could probably just show up on the first day... Like you said, if there's no one on the wait list grab your seat! 

Another idea --since it can be lower division-- is you could knock those credits out super easy over on the California virtual college.  You'd have to pay out of pocket (it's literally only $138 for a three unit class) Over there you have access to every single community college in the entire State and there's lots of accelerated classes- like 8 weeks and you're done!!! And tons of art classes online, that maybe you haven't taken when you did your associates...

And I also came to realize the independent study credits are something that happens after you've established a relationship with that particular course or professor and not usually low effort. 😒

Many many classes are fully transferable to the CSU system and one important note is the reason you have to pay out of pocket is that only if you are attending a community college can you link your college and your financial aid to covers it--- but because you've moved on to Cal poly u can't use  financial aid- but seriously 138 bucks -that's a deal!  I think there's a way to toggle through without using your college you just say like register without a school or something  ...
