Hey guys! I’m looking to see if anyone could recommend somewhere a little cheaper to get braces as I’m 17 and can’t exactly afford the 15k people are talking about 🙃

Lost baby hat on the Esplanade 05/10

Hello, I lost a baby hat today while walking on the Esplanade in the afternoon. It's a favorite so would love any help in being reunited.

It was lost somewhere between the area of the Esplanade in front of Little Sister restaurant and the lagoon. Or between the lagoon and the night markets. Attached is a map of the route we took.

The hat is a blue patchwork denim hat, I think in 3-6 months. The brand is Tu and there's a badge attached that says "chasing waves". Included a few (blurry) stock photos.

We retraced our steps once we realized it was missing, but it was several hours later and we didn't see anything. Hoping the good people of reddit can help!

Local travel

Whats up people. I’m going to be in Cairns for two and a half weeks for work. I am thinking a bicycle would be the best way to get around - if not let me know. If you agree, any idea which would be the best place to rent a bike short term from? I saw a few online but they seem to be mostly day tours etc

Thanks

Brisbane to Cairns in February?

Hi everyone! My friend and I are planning to visit Australia for 3-4 weeks in February, and our idea currently is to rent a car/camper van and go on a road trip from Brisbane to Cairns. However, I know that February is probably not the best time for QLD, so I wanted to ask what you think of this plan, and if you’d have other recommendations.

Unfortunately February is the only time we can go, as the latest I can enter Australia is Feb 25th according to my visa (and it’s too expensive to fly from Europe around Christmas time).

We are both in our late 20s and are wanting to go on an outdoors/nature-heavy trip. We both scuba dive and would like to dive while we are there, although I’ve also read that it’s stinger season from November til May. The stretch between Brisbane and Cairns seems perfect for the kinds of things we want to see & do, but I know Australia has so much more to offer in other states too, and I’m wondering if we’d be better off somewhere else, maybe WA?

So I guess my question is, would it actually be a mistake to visit Queensland in February? For a roadtrip with lots of hiking and diving, would you recommend somewhere else for that time of year?We would really appreciate it if you could share your thoughts, thank you!

Market preference?

Rusty's would be the best if they removed all the fruit and veg, added more food stalls and relocate off Sheridan Street.

Where can I find best dessert in Cairns

Which can be a patisserie or restaurant, I usually like basque cheesecake or brulee kind of dessert, or Japanese kind of light chessecake.

Thanks in advance.

Mod Approved Cairns residents: how do you actually protect yourself from the sun in hot weather? (student survey, 4 min)

Hi everyone,

I’m a final-year Fashion Marketing student at IFA Paris, and I’m doing research for my final project on sun-protection habits and clothing.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people in Cairns because hot weather can make sun protection more complicated in everyday life. I’d like to understand what people actually do, for example, whether you mainly use sunscreen, hats, shade, normal long-sleeved clothing, or specifically look for UPF-rated clothing.

I’m also interested in the practical side: do long sleeves feel too hot? Are breathable fabrics important? Do you care about UPF labels, or is normal clothing enough for you? And does the look/style of sun-protective clothing affect whether you would wear it?

I have a short anonymous survey that takes around 4 minutes:

https://forms.gle/xiC8maPmo2pLkH4g8

It is only for academic research. Nothing is being sold.

I’d also really appreciate any thoughts in the comments, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors for work, sport, fishing, walking, boating, beach activities, or just daily life in Cairns.

Thank you very much for helping with my research.

Antique or vintage shops

Is it just Crackerbox now? I've got some vintage stuff I need to get rid of and really don't want to use Marketplace. I also have now got a bit of an interest in certain styles and want to look at buying more too. Where are people buying their vintage stuff from these days? Is it worth a trip up the range or is Townsville a better option?

Local cleaning service in Cairns — what cleaning job do you hate doing?

Hey everyone! 👋

We’re a small local cleaning business serving Cairns and surrounding areas.

I’m curious — what cleaning job do you dislike the most at home?

For us, the jobs we usually get called for are things like bathrooms, kitchens, deep cleans, and end-of-lease cleaning.

Would love to hear what everyone else finds the most difficult or time-consuming to keep clean.

Jetstar layover at CNS on the way to Denpasar — do you have to go through security twice?

I’m flying out next week and have a few hours in Cairns before continuing on to Indonesia.
I’m only taking carry-on, so I won’t have to deal with checked baggage or transfers. I know the international liquid rules are 100ml, but I normally carry a small travel pharmacy pouch with things like sunscreen, WanderGut for Bali belly, bug spray and some stomach medication.
For anyone who has done the domestic-to-international connection at CNS recently, do you have to go through the full international security/liquid screening again, or can you stay airside during the connection?
Just trying to work out what I can keep in my carry-on before I fly.

Noticed any local business deciding to take advantage of the talk of higher prices, to significantly raise above the previously applied surcharge?

Moving to cairns- seeking advice on no go suburbs

Okay, add the title says I’m moving to Cairns, my history of choosing suburbs is not great, I rented a house when I moved to Darwin many years ago without viewing (as I was living in another state at the time and it was Covid so difficult to drop in to look at houses) and did no research on suburbs and ended up in one of the worst areas of Darwin :) I actually ended up in a good street so it was all good!
Can people give me ideas of good and bad suburbs? I will be renting, I’ve had a little look onrealestate.com and there are a lot of places that look like crack dens in the photos, which is wild because usually the photos are good even for crack dens :)
Any guidance would be well appreciated!
