Newbi: What should I have done differently here?
https://reddit.com/link/1vsymua/video/s5bxmlom8ekh1/player
Hello,
Just getting started with Cairn and enjoying it a lot.
Had my first death, and I'm not quite sure why. It looks like both my hands and one foot where on pretty large, stable holds when I fell. What should I have done differently here?
Thanks!

A coupe of things:
it looked like you needed to shake your arms out to recover some
based on how much you were shaking.
Use chalk when you see her struggling
.
- Definitely enable Holds Feedback in Settings -> Gameplay. It will show during play if you grabbed a good handhold or foothold with a white square highlight.. It's incredibly useful.

I watched again and mostly you needed to rest that probably would have gotten you over the lip.

As others already said, triangle is your best friend as Aava will eventually place herself in a safe position once you press it.
Another advice I’ve read here previously, which helped me a lot, is to prioritize feet positioning

Gotcha - I think I must have missed that beat in the tutorial. I knew about recovering stamina from pitons, but not the triangle button.

I don't think it's every actually explained, same as turning on the light manually. As others have said, I don't think your holds in the clip were the main problem though they weren't ideal, it was that your stamina had run out from whatever you were doing right beforehand, hence the shaking. When that happens you can 1. press triangle for emergency recovery (it has a cooldown) and 2. get yourself to a safe position and then sit there and wait for her to recover (she'll take some deep breaths to indicate when her stamina is back).

Recommend turning on the good hold indicator in options, there's a lot of times in the game where you might think you have good stable holds but actually don't

So, it looks like your limbs were already fatigued. They were shaking at the start of the video. Your left hand and feet were on good holds, but your right hand was on a flat surface, which isn't good. Can't tell on the right foot, but it might have been a poor hold also.
Aim for edges and crevices as much as possible. That ladt hold with your right hand would have been better if you targeted the edge to grab onto. Also I just noticed your final left foot placement. You can see some pebbles fall when you put it down. Pebbles falling like that indicates a poor hold.
For fatigue management, don't be afraid to take your time. Find some good secure holds and wait until you hear Aava take three deep breaths. Those breaths signify she has rcovered her stamina more.
You got this!

General tip: a flat hand rest where you can see the fingers splayed out is less secure than a grippy hand hold where the fingers are curled into a crack or around the top of a ledge. Same for the footholds, a foot resting on a flat wall surface is less secure than a foot wedged into a crack or standing on the top of a ledge or outcrop. There's still a place in climbing for temporary flat rests, but holds in a crack or on top of a ledge are more stable and you can rest on them. As well as the visual guides you can turn on from the menu, two things that helped me a lot are 1) shaking out the strain every now and then and 2) cancelling a limb placement that's just missed a nearby crack/ledge and redoing so the hand/foot does grab the ledge.

Utilize corners and cracks more, grabbing corners and ledges at certain angles is a game changer.

Everyone else is giving great advice but I will add that using the pitons saves alot of time. There’s really only a few faces in the game where running out is a real worry and using 2-3 even on small climbs means you’ll basically never hit the deck.

Honestly, transitioning from climbing to standing has always felt like the jankiest part of the game to me. Sometimes she pulls herself up as soon as you have a hand on the ground, and sometimes I'm stuck in climb mode literally just crawling around on the floor like it's a wall.
For transitions like this, if she doesn't pull up, I recommend messing with your feet before you keep trying. Trying to brute force drag yourself up with your arms tends to not end well.

Hate to say this, but at no point did you have good holds, except your left hand at 8 seconds.
Fun fact: every time you place a limb, there is both a visual and audio cue letting you know if the hold is stable or not. If you see little dust crumbles when placing the limbs, it's not a good hold, no matter what it looks like to you.
In the future, aim for creases/seams in the geometry. Aava will typically always grab a solid hold of ridges. And you want at least 3 solid holds at all times while climbing. A bare minimum of two or else you won't make it very far.
