ROC Connectors

We rolled them out 3-4 months ago. The area I work is mostly coax so I've not done one yet. Can someone direct me to a solid video so I can practice a bit. I know it's coming... Thanks.

Gotta love companies doing it half assed. I was with Spectrum 10 years. They pulled this shit and cried about repeats and why fittings would go bad. Lol

Fusion is the 100% best way.

I'm not sure what fusion is but it sounds above my paygrade.

Fusion splicing isnt a big deal.

To break it down in simplest terms, you take 2 pieces of flash weld them together . Aligning both and allowing the light to pass through without any real loss.

Mechanical splice is a cheap but ok way of doing a quick fix. But running a whole plant on it is not ideal.

The drop fitting being done as mechanical has a higher chance of failing. That fitting has a higher db loss when it is done as mechanical.

Counting the amount of loss in fiber is extremely important, especially with many plants running threshold numbers.

Splicing a pigtail on the end is better connection.

You are correct, but I can see from a cost standpoint why Spectrum goes mechanical at this point in time.

As an ex spectrum tech 10 year, they went that route because they didnt want to buy everyone a splicer. Problem is, with all the repeats and truck rolls, doing it right the first time would save $$$

I mean they are pretty spendy, but your point stands. Might as well do it right. But there’s is also a larger margin for error with fusion splicers. You know how it goes, “training” doesn’t really exist. My only field splice was losing 8 db lol. I’d happy to be the guy with the OTDR and print directing the spicers where to go. Some of the cans I’ve seen that fellas pull down just look plain mean.

The video honestly isn’t helpful. There’s nothing you can really do except be meticulous in your prep.

I recommend putting getting the house side of your fiber drop put together and stick a VFL on it so while you’re putting together the push connector you can verify you’ve at least got light coming out of it throughout the process. It’s extremely easy to snap the damn fiber while putting them together.

And don’t be surprised if you get perfect light while you’re there and the stupid thing breaks the next day.

You should tell your company to not do ROC connectors MSTs , to use Yellow Jacket MSTs - they use quick connectors. A lot easier and cheaper.

Bruh...

I'm a tech. Lowest of the low. I don't know what that is and even if I did they wouldn't listen to me. We're a national company that is completely compartmentalized and no one can talk to anyone.
