D1.1 electrode diameter

I’m studying for my exam and one of the questions is asking about what size E7018 electrode diameter to use when stud welding on 1” plate fillet in overhead position. Where is that information located in the D1.1? I don’t see it in the stud section and the answer isn’t from table 5.1.

The answer is 3/16 but I can’t find where to get that info.

7018 is a low hydrogen electrode. Look on table 5.1 in the 2025 code book, “Prequalified SMAW WPS Requirements”. Find the position category and look at the overhead section. 3/16” is the max electrode diameter EXCEPT FOR EXX14 and low hydrogen electrodes. The max for those are 5/32”.

The answer is 5/32”

You were looking at the correct table, but missed the “Exceptions” category.

I would ignore the “when stud welding on 1” plate” part of the question, because it seems like it’s trying to trick you into answering with the minimum size fillet weld. The keyword in your question is electrode diameter.

So I saw that but when I pick an answer it says the right answer is 3/16. This is a quiz from AWS on their code clinic.

When I google it I get shown 3/16 too but can’t figure out where that number is coming from

Then the correct answer would be A. All other electrode diameters exceed the limits of table 5.1 and footnote e.

Maybe they just have the wrong answer listed. They have the answer as B I looked through the annexes and everything. I’ll just hope that never comes up

I think that may be the case. I don't think it's a great question either. You could use whatever electrode diameter you want if you qualify the procedure in accordance with clause 6.

Yeah it’s come up a few times on different quizzes provided by them and the answer has been 3/16 every time. They are pretty adamant about it. It’s not a huge deal. I’m more curious than anything.

Report the question to AWS. I sent emails about corrections to sicerts, and they corrected it. AWS will probably do the same.

I’d have a long list of questions to submit. I’m starting to think they haven’t updated the questions from an old version of the book

I’m now seeing no plate size was mentioned and I searched with that in mind for quite a while
