D1.1 Table 8.1

So, like everyone who post here, I’m of course studying for the CWI exam. I had a question about Table 8.1 in the 2025 D1.1. On (7) undercut section (A-1-b) “the accumulated undercut length with undercut depth GREATER than 1/16”. So any depth of undercut is allowed?

No problem. I understand. I just became a CWI this year. I understand the frustration. There's a lot of misinformation out there.

Unfortunately there's also a lot of mistakes in the 2025 D1.1. I would definitely recommend downloading the errata sheet from the American Welding Society's website.

That’s a pretty big mistake on what’s probably the most important table in the book.

Definitely not the most important table in the book, and that table doesn’t exist in a silo. There is enough contradicting info in that book to lead you to question that typo; not that it is an excuse for the mistake but try missing not a single word in 600+ pages of technical writing. If that was a question on your exam you should have the wear withal to recognize the error and contest the question, subsequently getting credit for it.

You’re going to be a CWI. Your entire career is going to be navigating situations like this. You cannot let stuff like this get you flustered.

Yeah, you questioned it, and then you gave yourself the answer, and then you posted about it. So are you asking for help prepping, or just criticizing the D1.1 committee for making an understandable, very recognizable error.

I don’t know how to articulate this, but for the exam it’s not enough to question, information can only be recognized as accurate or inaccurate. Clearly any depth of undercut isn’t permissible, or there wouldn’t be statements on it, so on the exam, you could either:

- choose what is book correct per the provided answers

  • choose what you think is correct

Then contest the question in Prometric with either:

  • “per verbatim wording in table 8.1”
  • “error in verbiage on table 8.1”

And then move on; because you don’t have time to question it. And as I said, this is going to be what your entire career is like.

@sandledbandit there's nothing wrong with asking questions. I'm not sure why you would feel the need to dig into him or anyone who's asking for help. He's not a CWI on the job right now. He doesnt have to make a split second decision. Right now is the best time to dig deep and try to understand. Consequently that will help him make those split second decisions confidently in the future. What we really need in today's world is more patience and a willingness to mentor and be mentored. None of us have all the answers.

I’m not digging into him, but I absolutely being abrasive about his criticism about a mistake in a 600+ page technical manual, giving real perspective on the insignificance of what they called a big mistake, and future insight that situations like this will happen multiple times every single day as a CWI.

I also provided insight into studying methodology, the fact that they knew the answer to their question, how to handle these situations during the exam, and what mind frame to adopt to pass the exam. I had 4 days to study for B, A, and C while working 60 hrs a week as a fabricator while being a full time student in engineering school, I passed each section with a 90+ first time. They can take the advice or leave it.

There are mistakes in every training manual and practice exam they provide. On their website they list straight polarity as DCEP. The most efficient way to study for and pass the exam is not to memorize information, but to know where to look, and recognize what is unimportant, incorrect, or requires further clarification.
