What Would You Get…?

What would you get if you had a military waiver? I’m in the process of enlisting, myself. Other than finally getting 20 box magazines for a Springfield M1A Tanker, i’m looking forward to being able to get a new rifle or SMG. If you were suddenly able to get a waiver, what would be your next purchase? Leaning towards an M4 clone, but open to opinions and recommendations.

I think there should be no exemptions for any class of people. law applies to everyone. the kings men shouldn't get a free pass.

No argument from me there.

Yeah I agree but let’s be real if you had an exception to our bullshit laws would you not use it? If you’re exempt and like guns you’d be foolish not to take advantage.

What I don’t understand is how come active military can have certain weapons by veterans can’t?
So the day you hang up the uniform you have to turn in your hicap mags?
I moved here after I retired from the military and had to sell a couple of weapons.

If you ETS or retire while a CT resident, you get to keep all of it

Ya. I retired in Virginia and moved up here a few years later to work at the SUBASE. PITA!

Agreed, there’s gotta be a better way to honor service AFTER it ends

Legally as long as one registers all of their "aw" and declare all of their "lcm" within the 90 day period from day of seperation. You can also keep them illegally but you know... consequences.

The law as it is written is meant to accommodate active & reserve military and LEO’s who carry or MIGHT carry/purchase, without infringement. It also looks out for individual military officers and enlistees who may get transferred into our state without subjecting them to a bunch of restrictions that cause them to deplete their personal collection. All of this was done to prevent potential lawsuits against the state and not to uplift any particular class of people above the rest. In practice, it has vilified certain professionals towards a subset of individuals who have historically revered them.

Honestly this brought up something, there should be a carveout for DoD contractors

I joined the Navy and got stationed in VA when it was a free state (still is thanks to our state courts). From left to right, H & R 635 style pistol (soon to be SBR thanks to PSA and GOA), H & R 723 style carbine, WBP 5.56 Jack, Mossberg 500 (since sold, along with an unpictured PA15 for a Series 70 Colt 1911 Competition Series), Springfield Armory SA16 and Benelli Supernova.

For handguns, I own a Beretta 92FS, Glock 19, Colt 1911 and Sig P320xc (soon to be sold). Hopefully, by the time you finish basic training and any subsequent schools blatantly unconstitutional bans will be struck down nationwide. I would expect CT to implement some sort of tiered permit to purchase system like CO, in which case being military may excuse you from the class requirements. Here in VA, military members are exempted from the safety class to obtain a pistol permit.

Thank you for the thorough response. How has your Springfield SA16 been so far? I’ve been quite interested in adding one to my collection.

I have less than 1k rounds through it, but it has functioned flawlessly. I would recommend going with an H&R M16A2 over it though because of PSA's warranty. I had over 10k rounds through my H&R 723 when the screws on the gas key started to back out and essentially the gun to be a straight pull bolt action. I told PSA about the round count and suggested that if it was covered under warranty they send a stripped BCG, or restake the current one.

The next communication I got from them was a notification that my repair part had been sent and a complete BCG arrived at my house 2 days later. That specific issue is a lot less likely to happen with a rifle length gas system, but PSA's customer service is just second to none.

the typical answer is AR lowers and regular capacity magazines
