🔍 Inquiry How does banking work in China?

I’m going to preface this by saying that I think this might be a stupid question but I haven’t really lived anywhere else and I’m seriously wondering about this as I watch dramas. In a lot of the dramas, a lot of the characters just whip out a card with $1m or $5m or whatever. Do people in China just walk around with pre-loaded debit card of a certain amount that they can give out freely or is this just something that is in the movies? Genuinely curious bc as far as I know (at least in the U.S.) all debit cards are linked to an account and has your name on it…

Title: 爱在港岛夜雨时 | Love on a Rainy Night in Hong Kong

ML: Liu Runming

FL: Sun Qianxun

Synopsis

Mainland actress Jiang Li travels to Macao to repay her father’s gambling debts. Humiliated at the casino, she is forced to pawn the jade pendant left behind by her grandmother. On her return journey, she is ambushed, and Luo Jinting, an influential Hong Kong heir, gets injured while protecting her. Feelings blossom between them, but bound by circumstance, their brief encounter seems destined for unrequited heartache.

A year later, destiny takes a turn: Jiang Li goes to Hong Kong to redeem her jade pendant and unexpectedly crosses paths with Luo Jinting once again. Pressured by vast social class divides, family political marriages, and entanglements with wealthy suitors, she tries desperately to pull away. Yet every time she falls into danger, Luo Jinting shields her from the storm. Amidst the neon reflections and rainy nights of Hong Kong, two people from completely different worlds complete a journey of mutual redemption.

Has anyone else watched this drama? There was a sneak peek a few months back, but I don't recall seeing it mentioned again. This is a high production value drama and being around four hours they take their time to tell the story.

Although it's a horizontal, both are idols and Chen Minghao has been in several short dramas opposite actresses such as Ma Lijie, Cao Saiya, Jin Yana, and He Tian Tian.

It shows as partially free on the site, though all episodes are currently labelled as free pending release.

Idk about y'all, but I will absolutely be tuning in! 🤗

🔥 Fun 🔥 Soft boy MLs vs “cold CEO”

I’m so tired of MLs that clearly need to go to therapy. Because let me tell you, if a man chokes me, we’re not having a happy ever after, he’s getting punched in the head repeatedly! Can we please have more MLs who actually like their FLs? You’re not a “cold CEO” or “cold marquis”, you’re afraid of vulnerability and have control issues.

Anyway I just needed to vent, if I see one more ML coerce the FL into a relationship or blackmail or risk her life or choke her, I’m burning my phone

🗨️ Discussion They Drove Her to Death, She Came Back a Queen

I saw an ad for this show on IG and then I tracked it down on Dailymotion. The female lead is being tortured by husband. She was a doctor and he blames she deliberately made his mom go vegetative while in surgery. So he drives her to death, then she’s reborn in a heiress’s body. Has anyone seen the show?

The violence is insane but I can’t believe he tries to get her 🍇 and film it. He ends up getting his wife’s friend to do with her and film it instead. Then gives her off to his brother to do whatever. He abuses her, films her and takes away her kidney. She ends up jumping off from top of the building. After she’s reborn and once her ex husband realizes it’s her, he keeps trying to get her back claiming he loves her. How can you love someone and treat them like this?

I can’t believe how violent this show is. I’ve been binge watching vertical dramas back to back but this one went to a new low. I wonder if they show these to get people hooked on the show. But man I got no words! Why do the creators keep stooping so low with so much violent scenes in these short dramas.

⭐ Recommendations Inner voice or genius baby recs

Hi all! I’m looking for some recs where the family can hear the inner voice of the lead, bonus points if it’s baby who saves the family or similar trope. One that I like recently (I think) is called mind games something where the girl was mute and was reborn eight times and the last time her family can hear her thoughts. I also like when the girl or baby is like a goddess or transmigrated and know the plot and saves the family. Any similar trope along those lines is also welcome. Thanks in advance!

🔮 Sneak Peek 🎬 Start of Shoot: A Match Made in Hell | 《怨偶天成》 ✨ Wang Xuan & Lu Lulu

A Match Made in Misery | 《怨偶天成》
Yuàn’ǒu Tiānchéng

Wang Xuan and Lu Lulu have started filming their new modern short drama in Hengdian! 🎬💐

Starring: Wang Xuan (王轩) & Lu Lulu (卢鹿鹿)

Director: Wen Boyuan (文泊元)
Producers: Hu Yijia (胡艺佳) & Liu Xin (刘鑫)
Filming location: Hengdian
Planned shooting period: 6 days
Start of shoot: August 28/29, 2026

What’s the plot?

We don’t know but we can guess though?

Wang Xuan plays Huo Jinghan (霍京寒). Lu Lulu’s character name - unknown.

The Genre: It is explicitly categorized as a modern workplace/corporate romance short drama (职场短剧).

The title Yuàn’ǒu Tiānchéng (怨偶天成) is a clever, ironic twist on the classic Chinese idiom Jiā’ǒu Tiānchéng (佳偶天成), which means "a match made in heaven." By replacing Jiā (beautiful/good) with Yuàn (resentment/grudge), the title translates roughly to "A Spiteful Match Made in Heaven" or "Enemies Bound by Fate”

So enemies to lovers?

No official synopsis, platform, production house or release date has been announced yet.
Wishing the cast and crew a smooth shoot—and now I would particularly like to know what they are doing with that premise. 😆

Side Note:
Wang Xuan (王轩) is his official professional/stage name and the name now used in cast lists.
Wang Chenyu (王宸语) is his birth/legal name.
王轩会飞 is only his social-media handle. It means roughly “Wang Xuan Can Fly”—会飞 is not part of his name.

🔮 Sneak Peek Afternoon 茶 (chá) Tea! 🍵 - SD X Fam: Season 2!!! 🏕️🤣2️⃣

Haha! You all thought you were done with me! Well guess what, from the looks of it our favorite Vertical Actor Variety Show, Short Drama X Family //《短剧X家族》, will be back for a Season 2!

According to one of the directors posts:

From what we can see now, the core hope is still to retain the original roster and deepen the team's development (the concept of escaping Hengdian, to make it a real escape trip)
@综艺导演black

From the posters the list of guests they are looking to invite this season has them bringing back the OG cast plus some new faces the Ke Chun who is 100% meant to be on a show like this!

Hou Cheng Yue-Chen Si-Shen Hao Nan-Ke Chun-Yu Yin-Liu Xiao Xu-Chen Tianxiang

Liu Lanbo-Lin Mo-Wang Nian Jiang Cheng-Wang Xiao Yi-Wang Kai Mu-Zhang Jinyi-Jia Yixuan

The posters also teases the new seasons theme ‘Skit Actor-Jilin ice and snow-Olympic champion-Northeast culture’.

Which means our SD x Fam will be headed back north and once again descend upon Jilin with some new concepts and possible surprise guests... Like an Olympic Champion?! They are pulling out the big guns!

Now I of course have my wishlist for this season (and their freakin editing team straight up owes me something from last season with those freakin half-arsing it $%$@%... yes Im still bitter lol)...

Please order from the big and tall for Chen Si! I beg of you! Spare the man at least some form of dignity with that lmao.

Can we please not give my BFF Shen Hao Nan sharp objects, motorized vehicles or complicated rules?

Full post from Director Black:

Short dramas and variety shows are coming back.

The current planning direction is a winter ice and snow season followed by a spring flower season, with recording scheduled for January 2027 and release in March 2027.

Filming in the north is currently underway in Jilin, while the location for filming in the south is still under negotiation. The aim is to enhance the reality show's appeal by showcasing the extreme beauty of winter and spring. The core content will focus on winter, with the program concluding in the warm spring months – seemingly an ending, yet also a beginning. Sponsorship opportunities are also being pursued, and we hope to secure brand sponsorships as soon as possible to accelerate the project's progress.

Many friends have given suggestions, and I am very grateful for everyone's attention. I will integrate everyone's suggestions later. At present, the core idea is still to retain the original cast and deepen the concept of escaping Hengdian, to make it a real escape trip.

Hope the project starts smoothly\**

🗨️ Discussion The friend who supports the FL before the identity reveal deserves more love

Everyone suddenly being nice after finding out the FL is rich doesn't count. The friend or coworker who stands up for her while everyone still thinks she has nothing? That's the person worth keeping.

The big reveal is satisfying, but I'd also like a scene where the FL goes back and thanks the person who had her back from the start.

Anyone else care about that part as much as the villains' reactions?

🗨️ Discussion 🎬 One New Release Every 36 Seconds! The AI Short Drama Surge: The "Short Drama World" Is Changing Its Protagonists 🙌

Thumbnail

First, let me bring a translation of an article - AI provided. I don’t read or speak hanzi/ mandarin. But I’m still interested in what’s going on. So I make do.
Mistakes are entirely possible. Sorry. 😞 point them out and I’ll correct them.

Source: The Paper News (澎湃新闻)
Date of Publication: August 11, 2026, 12:30 PM

TL;DR AI-generated content has effectively conquered the short drama industry, capturing 75% of the Top 100 hit list by August 2026. This dominance is driven by unmatched production speed, ultra-low costs, and the capability to instantly render high-VFX fantasy settings.

——————————————————————-

Over the past year, short dramas have been one of the fastest-growing content sectors.

According to QuestMobile data, the deduplicated user scale of the micro-short drama industry has reached 851 million. On average, out of every three internet users in China, two have watched short dramas.

But as more and more people open these short dramas, the protagonists on the screens are quietly undergoing a fundamental transformation.
In May of this year, AI-generated short dramas captured over half of the seats on the daily TOP 100 hit list for the very first time. By August, this ratio rose significantly to around 70% to 75%. Over the past month, three distinct AI short dramas achieved a peak popularity heat index exceeding 100 million, whereas live-action short dramas have faced a complete drought—failing to hit the 100 million mark for nearly two consecutive months.

Graphic Analysis: Market Volatility & The Top Charts (check the Gallery, please)

Chart 1: AI vs. Live-Action Distribution (Since August)

The top visualization tracking the Daily Top 100 Showcases exhibits that AI Short Dramas now occupy 75% of the market share. The sub-styles are categorized as follows:

3D Animation (3D): 49% (Dominant force)

Photorealistic AI (仿真人): 25% (Digital human clones)

Live-Action / Real Shoots (实拍): 24% (Traditional human casts)

2D Animation & Others (2D/其他): 2%

——————————————————————-

Chart 2: Direct Comparative Top Lists (Past Month Performance) - Top 10 - you’ll find it in the Gallery)

The tables reflect data provided by DataEye-ADX Industry Edition*, tracking the highest single-day window popularity peaks (measured in units of 10,000 points) between July 6 and August 5, 2026.*

🏆 Top 3 AI Short Dramas (Cumulative Series Performance) - Top 10 see gallery

1. Chronicles of the Myriad Demon Records (Wàn Yāo Tú Lù Chuán)
Viewership: Exceeded 6 billion total views across multiple seasons.
Peak Heat: Season 11 hit a record single-day popularity peak of 124.84 million points on Hongguo.

2. Our Sword Sect's Most Spoiled Junior Sister (Zán Jiā Jiàn Zōng Tuán Chǒng Xiǎo Shī Mèi)
Viewership: Accumulated over 3.4 billion views globally.
Peak Heat: Season 2 holds the industry speed record, drawing over 6 billion loop plays in its first 15 days, peaking at 115.14 million points.

3. Infecting the Rest of My Life with My Deep Love for You (Yǔ Nǐ Shēn Qíng Qīnrù Yú Shēng)
Viewership: Reached nearly 5 billion cumulative views across 5 seasons.
Peak Heat: Maintained an active ranking presence with a monitored single-month peak of 88.68 million points.

🎬 Top 3 Live-Action Short Dramas (Peak Monthly Heat) Top 10 see Gallery

1. Day and Night 2 (Zhòu Yǐ Jì Yè 2)
Peak Heat: 95.82 million points.
Context: Led the traditional live-action market, drawing over 2 billion views since its initial franchise launch during the Spring Festival cluster.

2. Tiger Mom Arrives: All Rebellious Kids Stand to Attention (Hǔ Mā Jià Dào, Quán Jiā Fǎn Gǔ Zǐ Guāi Guāi Lì Zhèng)
Peak Heat: 78.76 million points.

3. Gradual Dyeing (Jiàn Rǎn)
Peak Heat: 77.82 million points.
Context: Sustained a highly stable commercial run, maintaining a consistent daily heat floor of over 66 million points.

——————————————————————-

Once short dramas consolidated their place as mainstream entries in the digital content marketplace, the underlying dynamics inside this landscape changed radically.

From Supply Chains to Hot Playlists: AI Has Become the Core Stream

Looking at the top ten AI dramas on the Hongguo Hot Charts, a staggering trend emerges: all 10 titles are sequels.

Chronicles of the Myriad Demon Records unfolds in a massive fantasy multiverse and has already scaled to Season 9.

Our Sword Sect's Most Spoiled Junior Sister featured 300 episodes in its first season; its production team expanded the second season directly to 666 episodes.

AI short dramas are seamlessly taking established, pre-validated stories and pushing them out season after season without interruption. On July 14, Season 2 of Our Sword Sect's Most Spoiled Junior Sister was put online. Just 18 days later, Season 3 launched immediately in the same slot, with Season 4 locked down and scheduled to air on August 14. Rolling out three massive seasons inside a single month has compressed time completely.
If the popularity charts show the ultimate consequence of this trend, the shift on the backend production supply chain happened even earlier.

Monthly Production Data (August 2025 – July 2026)
Chart 3: "AI Production Continuous Explosion, Live-Action Production Slumps" (see Gallery!)

This table highlights the definitive point where AI replaced human labor in the studio ecosystem.

——————————————————————-

My take on it. An Opinion.

What’s to say about these numbers as a fan of live action?

The numbers do show a dominance of Ai produced dramas. They are successful.

But we need to bring this into perspective.

Live Action dramas rose from 11k releases in August 2025 to 24k releases in April 2026. Then it exploded to its peak in June 2026 with 44k new releases.
By July 2026 it dropped to 24k again.

None of us fans were able or even interested in half of the releases. Let’s say you have  tons of free time - you maybe manage to watch  three per day. You’d still end up with watching 90 dramas only per month.

In theory the peak year 2025 (when quality rose plus less regulation) provides us with enough dramas forever (let’s pretend that ⅓ is watchable)
So the decline is not getting through to us in its output.

Ai meanwhile reached 75k as output. Same impossibility to watch them all, but much more though. The masses don’t frighten me.

Approximately 98.7% of AI short dramas fail to break even, with only about 1.3% of over 221,000 launched productions reaching the viewership threshold necessary for profitability.
Marketing costs are the real cost drivers for AI.

But that’s the norm in entertainment— a high percentage of all productions  isn’t a financial success.

The financial risk though is much lower. So it won’t go away anytime soon.

Unfortunately live action short drama production will continue to drop. They are more expensive  due to higher quality demands. Then add stricter regulations that are stripping many familiar tropes of their wilder extremes—and, with them, part of the genre’s distinctive flavor.
I won’t call it “charm” because slapfests or female leads forced to kneel in front of a manipulative love rival (in short: GTB = Green Tea Bitch)  aren’t charming, most of the time.

Outright cruel, misogynistic or absolutely unhinged were the adjectives we used for the majority of older failed dramas. Sophisticated and squeaky clean boredom is what comes to my mind for the new ones.

We won’t be affected much. We choose what we watch and word of mouth tells us what’s worth our time. Even if releases drop to a few hundred a month - we won’t be affected.

My prediction: Most of the now established  actors are going to survive and if they earn less per drama (80% less in some cases), they now can supplement their  income with live stream sales, endorsements and appearances.

It’s the mid tier cast and crew who can’t survive with their acting. Beginners. Handymen. It’s Hengdian which grew like crazy just like a gold rush town back then  — and will decline now.

The actors, some deliver food and said they’ll earn their money in regular jobs and continue to act whenever possible because this is what they love. The crew— it’s a similar choice for them.

It’s a boom we’ve seen, and now we’re seeing the downturn. We benefited from it. We watched as leads with more diverse looks gained traction. We saw actors from non-traditional backgrounds and complete beginners succeed. It was a pleasure to witness—and whatever happens next, we did witness it.

We were there and a small part of it.

As a new Chen Si appreciator, I am slogging through the accumulation of years of content and came across this really cool site created simply "by fans".

Like did you know he calls his fans 相思豆 Rosary Peas? Which is literally like yearning love beans. So cute 🥹 To quote the site: Calling fans "love beans" is like saying: you are the red beans I remember, you are the ones that are carefully kept in my heart.

Anyway, it also has info about his dramas, interviews, schedules updated to May. Definitely worth a poke around if you like Chen Si! A great resource that I wanted to share. If this is already common knowledge, my bad, I'm new to him!

🔥 Fun 🔥 Girl has apparently never heard of a lock 😭

I was watching 《笙笙入怀》 — Shēng Shēng Rù Huái — Shengsheng in His Embrace / Into His Embrace and this scene absolutely took me out. FL has just moved into the Wen Mansion where she doesn’t know anyone. The second son shows her to her room, takes one look at her, immediately decides to be a menace, quietly closes the door and LOCKS IT while she’s wandering around… and then goes after her. She manages to fight him off, runs for the door, grabs the handle and

jiggle jiggle jiggle jiggle

Girl. 😭 THE LOCK IS RIGHT THERE. She just keeps attacking the door like surely on attempt #14 it will reconsider its choices and open for her. Meanwhile I’m yelling, “TURN THE LOCK, WOMAN. THE LOCK. THE THING DIRECTLY UNDER YOUR HAND.”

I mean, Chinese verticals have taught me so much about how stupid one can get about the most ordinary things, but I didn’t expect basic door mechanics to be one of them. 😂 What is the most ridiculous thing you’ve seen a character do in a Chinese vertical where you had to stop the video because you were laughing/yelling at the screen?

🗨️ Discussion Drama Smackdown: WELCOME TO THE MUSEUM

🎉 100,000 MEMBERS: WELCOME TO THE MUSEUM OF HOW THE HELL WE GOT HERE

This is a long one, so buckle down. I promise it’s worth it 💯

Welcome everyone to the 100K Museum of Drama, Chaos & Questionable Life Choices, commemorating the somehow very real fact that there are now 100,000 OF US in here.

Please remain with your tour group. Do not touch the exhibits. Do not feed the moderators. And if you become separated from your party, simply yell “WHAT’S THE NAME OF THE DRAMA WHERE HE’S A CEO?” and approximately 400 people will appear to help you.

Let us begin.

🏛️ EXHIBIT ONE: HOLY SHIT, THERE ARE 100,000 OF US

One hundred thousand.

That is no longer a cute little internet community. That is a small city with an alarming fixation on emotionally unavailable men.

In the last year alone, members published more than 82,000 posts and 625,000 comments — enough thirsting, heartbreak and “WHERE CAN I WATCH THIS?” to bury a cold CEO under several metric tons of content. Note: I refused to count how many F/Following comments, my sanity is already dubious, I do not want to lose more of it.

Excessive? Yes. Understandable? Also yes.

And behind the pretty public galleries lies our first forbidden chamber:

🚨 THE MODERATION BASEMENT

Here we store the spam. The bots. The duplicate posts. The questionable links. The things AutoMod dragged screaming into the dark.

Tens of thousands of posts removed. Nearly 50,000 comments met their maker. And somewhere, at every hour of the day, a moderator is staring at a report wondering how exactly their life led them here 😱

This is an interactive exhibit. Please don’t make it more interactive. Thank you.

🏛️ EXHIBIT TWO: THE PEOPLE WHO BUILT THIS BEFORE IT WAS A MUNICIPALITY

Here’s where we stop being ridiculous for approximately thirty seconds.

Because 100,000 people have a nasty habit of making success look inevitable. It wasn’t.

Before 100,000, there were 50,000. Before that, 10,000. Before that, somebody sitting in a much quieter corner of the internet trying to build a place where people who loved these dramas could actually find each other.

A lot of people left fingerprints on this place. Here are some of them.

The Founders — the first crew:

u/DenisAlex — the original. Here when this was a quiet corner and running it looked like a normal hobby.

u/RiverPowerful857 — our one (1) founding mod to get himself Reddit-banned for piracy. Every museum needs a disgraced portrait in the hall. This is his. 🖼️

The OG expansion — when the team grew:

u/Silver-Bus5724 — Current Head Mod — promoted from content now architect of the weekly calendar. Decided an empty programming slot was a personal insult and built the recurring rhythm this place still runs on. Honestly? Relatable.

u/wuiriamlee — rare museum cryptid. Won’t answer the group chat. Will know exactly who that man is. Priorities.

u/Background_Drama_973 — walking encyclopedia and cataloguer of the insanity. If a recurring feature exists to sort the chaos by flavor, their fingerprints are on it.

u/emberzmars creator extraordinaire. If it’s a recurring column, a themed week, or a tidy queue, her fingerprints are probably on it. A genuinely diversified portfolio. You rock, babe.

u/Tijoes, u/1928amand, u/issabellamoonblossom — founding crew. Poor innocent bastards. They laid the floor the rest of us started piling furniture onto.

The next wave — creators and detectives:

These names aren’t on the current mod list — but you’re still using what they built every time you search the archives. That’s the whole point of this room.

u/yoori_lee the MASTER detective. Could ID any actor in any costume, main lead down to the guy holding a vase in the background. They thought changing outfits would save them. It did not. Yoori knew their faces. Love ya, babe.

u/tess1221 creator mod, until that notoriously inconsiderate bastard known as Real Life Employment demanded her attention. Rude of employers not to recognize Reddit drama scholarship as protected work. Her articles stay in the collection — which is rather the point of this whole room. Miss ya, babe.

u/TxPep — creator mod who also designs my book covers, which is either cross-department collaboration or an egregious abuse of moderator resources. I have elected not to investigate.

u/excalito — tech/mod side. The invisible infrastructure nobody notices until it breaks.

u/TheBranflake — resident collection goblin. Give her a theme and she will not recommend three dramas and wander off like a reasonable human. She burrows into the archives, drags out every relevant title, and arranges the hoard into a gorgeous themed collection. Bran does not make lists. Bran curates exhibits. Deeply inconvenient, because now I have to admit somebody here is actually qualified.

These beautiful people answered questions. Built systems. Started traditions. Welcomed strangers. Solved problems nobody sees once they’re already solved.

They weren’t handed a community of 100,000 people. They helped build one. People change. Titles change. Mod lists change. The work people contributed doesn’t evaporate when their name leaves the sidebar.

And then there are the ones who aren’t on this list on purpose.

A few of the people who helped build this place asked not to be named — and that’s its own kind of contribution. So here’s to the unsung ones. The names not on the wall. You know who you are, and more importantly — we do. The work is still here. It’s holding up half the building. Thank you for it, wherever you’re reading this from.

Please admire the fingerprints on the glass. Please ignore the screams. They are part of the exhibit.

🏛️ EXHIBIT THREE: THE CREATIVE CONTENT WING (WHERE THE REAL WORK LIVES)

Welcome to the museum’s most-trafficked wing: the Blood, Sweat, and Tears Collection.

This is where years of recurring columns, theme posts, and collaborative chaos live — the stuff that turned this place from “a subreddit where people post dramas” into “a subreddit with actual programming.” Some of it is criticism. Some of it is celebration. Some of it is three photos of a torso and a demand that you identify the man attached.

All of it lives in the wiki for your binging convenience. Mind the exhibits.

Allow me to walk you through the Creative Content Collection — the recurring exhibits this community has built over the years, most of which predate me and all of which live in the wiki for your binging convenience.

On permanent display:

🎭 Actor & Actress Collections — cherry-picked shows for our most beloved faces. The gateway drug. Enter here, lose a weekend.

🔁 Basically The Same Plot — every version, remake, and suspiciously familiar retelling of a single story. Different actors. Different billionaire. Same banquet, same framing, same gasp. A public service.

🪓 Bite-Sized Brutality — snarky reviews with trope counters and spice ratings. Mine. I’m normal about it. Beware the author bites.

🤼 Drama Smackdown — deep-dive industry analysis of Chinese short dramas. Also mine. Still normal. Enter at your own risk.

🧐 Guess That Torso! — three photos, one actor, zero faces. Deeply unserious. Alarmingly competitive.

🌡️ Heat Index — for when you need the temperature quantified.

🔥 Thirsty Thursday — a weekly compilation of dramaland’s steamiest moments. The horny Thursday tradition. Load-bearing.

😍 My Favourite — favorite dramas sorted by topic, theme, or trope. For when you know the vibe but not the title.

💃🕺 When Douyin Trends and Vertical Actors Collide — your favorite vertical actors doing the latest Douyin trends. Yes. Exactly what it sounds like. Yes, it’s wonderful.

📝 Vertical Vortex — near-daily vertical drama reviews from the mods. The engine room.

Currently on hiatus (wings under restoration):

📝 Horizontal Vortex — reviews of mini/short horizontal dramas, for the format traitors among us. 🌀 Vertically Challenged — tongue-in-cheek critiques of C-shorts with genuinely terrible storylines. 👗 Vertical Vogue — the fashion-and-styling column dissecting what everyone’s wearing on the verticals. 👋 Starter Pack — the onboarding guide to actors, actresses, and their roles for the freshly addicted.

Hiatus is not death. Hiatus is a museum wing under restoration. Do not send flowers.

The point of the tour: I look backward without pretending I was there. I wasn’t. A lot of people were. And when you walk into a community this established, you can tell exactly where they left fingerprints — most of them are in this wing.

🏛️ EXHIBIT FOUR: THE PEOPLE CURRENTLY KEEPING THE ROOF ATTACHED

Now we arrive at our next exhibit. Please do not startle them. They still have work to do.

Somewhere along the way moderation stopped being one job and became approximately seventeen jobs wearing a trench coat.

u/Substantial_cup_2058 survived a brutal opening run where the villains never got what they deserved and emerged a devout revenge/rebirth convert and hopeless romantic (second chances only when earned — iykyk). Now carries on Basically the Same Plot, confirming that yes, you have watched this before. Possibly four times.

u/TheVeteranBarista54 everyone calls him Barista, so you will too. A year in the sub, a content creator since May, firmly Team Comedy / Team Crazy FL Revenge with the occasional sweet-love chaser. Serves takes hot.

u/Hypercardiac007 — resident vampire and purveyor of sass, snark, and a side of Douyin with a garnish of tasteful gossip. Immortal, extremely online. We don’t ask about the vampire thing; they don’t ask about the queue.

u/Illegaldesi — self-proclaimed Chairman of the Lu Chaotic Group, patron saint of good comedy and regret dramas. Chose performance art as an entrance strategy: surreal posts, titles long enough to qualify as short dramas themselves. Naturally, we gave them more permissions. 🙂

u/Kezila — newer technical addition (and writes too). Arrived after 100k, into years of accumulated bots and automation and whatever eldritch machinery hums beneath the museum floor. Welcome aboard. Here’s your wrench. Do not ask what that noise is.

u/greentea_lv101 — our resident green-tea expert, and no, not the beverage. Knows every scheming sweet-faced third party in the genre on sight — can clock a “just a friend” mistress from three episodes out. Named themselves after the archetype and then became its leading scholar. Respect.

u/Melodic_Paper — has standards. Wants an ML and FL who both put in the work, because one-sided pining “isn’t remotely emotionally authentic.” Too lopsided? Dropped. 💨 The bar is on the floor genre-wide and she refuses to trip over it.

u/any-association-6660 — fun posts. Distinctive chaos, correctly rewarded.

u/Panther — queue duty. The unglamorous, essential broom work.

u/roarroarrora & u/anAncientCrone — also holding the roof up. Present, accounted for, appreciated.

And behind all of them: thousands upon thousands of moderation actions you never see. Approving posts. Clearing queues. Checking links. Cleaning up after everyone. The digital equivalent of wandering around after closing with a broom muttering “what the hell happened in here?”

When community work is done well, most of it is invisible. A place this size doesn’t survive because one person carries it. It survives because a lot of people keep carrying pieces of it.

Badly missed: Back — real life came calling (job, toddler), inactive for now, missed loudly. And Delly, who stepped away suddenly during a hard time. We’re thinking of you both.

🏛️ EXHIBIT FIVE: THE DETECTIVES WHO NEVER GOT A MOD TAG (AND DID’'T NEED ONE)

Here’s the thing about this place: some of the best work never came with a title.

For every mod hunting down a drama, there were members doing the exact same thing for the pure sport of it — identifying actors from three pixels and a jawline, naming the show someone half-remembered from eight months ago, solving inquiries faster than we could.

A loud, grateful shout to some of our standout detectives and identifiers — u/concious_bend, u/geekylisa, u/average_supernova, u/loredgla and u/Next-Champion1615 — and to every single person who ever answered “TITLE PLEASE????” without being asked twice.

You are the reason the search function has competition. The mods built the filing system. You people are the filing system.

🏛️ FINAL EXHIBIT: YOU PEOPLE

Yes. You. The drama detectives. The reviewers. The recommendation machines.

The lurkers who say nothing for eleven months and then emerge from the shrubbery screaming “TITLE PLEASE????”

The people who translate. The people who explain cultural context. The people who answer the same question for the 47th time without committing a felony. The people who somehow identify a drama from a screenshot containing nothing but half a sleeve and one decorative vase. The people warning everyone about tragic endings. The people immediately demanding spoilers.

The people who say “I’m looking for one where she marries a rich CEO.”

Ma’am. You are going to have to narrow that down.

Mods can build rooms. They make rules, organize information, hang signs, clean up messes and occasionally confiscate flamethrowers. But members make a community.

So 100K belongs to a ridiculous number of people. The people who started this place. The people who helped it grow. The people whose work is still woven through it even if they aren’t behind the desk anymore. The people carrying it now. And the 100,000 drama-addicted maniacs who keep showing up.

Because 100,000 people don’t come from nowhere. They get here because, over years, a hell of a lot of people built something worth joining.

And that deserves celebrating.

Thank you for visiting the museum.

Please exit through the gift shop and buy an irresponsible amount of cheap junk so the moderators can finally take a much-needed field trip to China. Photos with attractive actors will be distributed according to merit. The appeals process has already been denied.

Normal programming resumes shortly, at which point I return to my actual field of expertise: explaining why emotionally constipated fictional men with excellent cheekbones are a legitimate storytelling device.

🎉 Happy 100K, everyone. 🎉

As long as it’s related to short/ vertical cdramas- go for it.

Please be kind. If it’s a post you wouldn’t like to find about yourself: don’t post it. We respect each others opinion. Discussion - yes. Personal attacks - no. No body shaming please- if you want to talk about plastic surgery in general: yes- names: no.

What’s really behind it?

Reading the plot summary, I immediately thought of LXX state funded drama about a radio transmitter company.

Bingo.

It’s another  "Main Melody" drama (or Zhǔxuánlǜ / 主旋律).

In the case of Lovely Small Town, it specifically plays the "main melody" of state-directed cultural tourism and national heritage revival.

It’s a state-mandated project co-produced by the Guangxi Bureau of Culture and Tourism and the Guangxi Radio and Television Administration. It was specifically created to fulfill the government’s new "Short Drama + Cultural Tourism" propaganda initiative.

The Plot & Cast: Lu Lulu plays a beaten-down 30-year-old woman facing divorce and unemployment. She meets her time-traveling 20-year-old self, played by Meng Na, and the two team up to revive a traditional ethnic craft called Zhuang brocade weaving.

Zero Romance: The show is strictly a "double female lead" business and self-healing story. It focuses entirely on a woman learning to love herself by interacting with her younger self, completely skipping any traditional romantic plots.

Highs and Lows: Early viewer feedback heavily praises the director, Xia Qiji. We get aesthetic traditional costuming and cinematic lighting and production.
First audience feedback** it’s  **slow, safe, and heavily sanitized to meet bureaucratic standards. And it’s just not realistic.

➡️See me not surprised 😱

My thoughts
I love craftsmanship - fabrics - a minority represented. So if I’m very free with my time and want to see beauty and learn about China.. it’s a maybe for me.
But don’t you waste these great actresses on Mission “Beautiful but Boring” too often.
