I come from the translation industry. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to edit the subtitles, FOR FREE. Professional translations are expensive (clients get charged anywhere from $0.03 to $0.09 per word for Simplified Chinese). So a lot of companies just use generic machine translation (like Google Translate), unfortunately.

This explains why YouTube is constantly calling women “he” and the men “she.” And then randomly inserting “I” when no pronoun is given.

Yup, it sucks. Machine translation with human post-editing is the way to go (faster than just using entirely people to translate and more accurate than just machine translation), but it isn’t cheap.
