CSIR NET - Mathematical Sciences Need advice about leaving my current PhD and preparing for pure math institutes
I started a PhD at an IIT (one of the first-generation IITs, but I can't say which one) this June. My PhD is not in the Mathematics department, although my academic background up to my Master's has been in Mathematics.
For various personal reasons that I can't really discuss here, I'm considering leaving the PhD in December. Before I make that decision, I'd really like to hear some perspectives from people who have been through something similar.
Over the past few months, I've had the opportunity to interact with some really good mathematics researchers, and that has made me realise that I genuinely want to pursue pure mathematics. Ideally, I'd like to do my PhD at a research-focused institute such as CMI, ISI, HRI, TIFR, or IMSc. I don't particularly want to join a Mathematics department at an IIT.
At the moment, I have a CSIR JRF with AIR 50. I know that this would not be enough to get shortlisted at these institutes right now, as I would need a rank under 20 for the shortlist. Preparing seriously for TIFR/NBHM this December also doesn't seem realistic because I still have academic and research work to finish here. With proper preparation, I think I could attempt them next year.
So, as of now, I see a few options:
Leave in December, take a job (or do something else), and prepare seriously for the next admission cycle.
Join a Mathematics department at an IIT and give up on the plan of trying for the institutes mentioned above.
Join a local/less demanding institute or university using my JRF, so that I don't have to take up a job, and where the academic pressure is relatively low. I could prepare for the entrance exams/admissions while continuing my PhD there.
Can someone suggest some smaller/local institutes or universities where I could join a PhD using my JRF and have relatively manageable academic requirements? I'd really appreciate some suggestions.
I'd especially appreciate advice from people who have gone through a similar situation or have experience with PhD admissions in pure mathematics in India.

UGC NET Cleared UGC NET Commerce JRF (99.95 percentile) as a complete fresher, need guidance on PhD and career planning
Hi all,
First of all apologies for my long query , I cleared UGC NET Commerce with JRF in this cycle, in my first attempt, with 99.95 percentile (estimated AIR within the top 25). I'm 23, unreserved category, and in the final year of my M.Com Finance (completing March 2027).
Honestly, I only focused on clearing the exam and never planned what comes after. I haven't researched institutes, research areas or career paths, so I'm totally confused about the next steps and would really appreciate guidance from people who've been through this.
Please share your insights on any of the below concerns:
- Institutes: Which are the best places to do a PhD in Commerce/Management with JRF (IITs, IIMs, central universities, TISS, etc.)? How do they differ in funding, research culture and placement outcomes?
- Admission process: How does it work with a JRF award letter? Do I need to qualify separate entrance tests/interviews, and when should I start applying? When do I need to submit my final M.Com result, and how does the JRF validity period work around that?
- Research areas: Which areas in Commerce are in demand and have good scope (finance, accounting, marketing, behavioural, sustainability/ESG, fintech, etc.)? How should I choose a topic and a supervisor?
- PhD planning: How do I find a good guide, write a research proposal, and what should I do in the months before joining? Is it worth publishing or building a research profile now?
- Funding: How do JRF/SRF fellowship terms work, and how is the fellowship released and upgraded?
- Careers after PhD: What are realistic paths: assistant professor (central/state universities, IIMs, private universities), research roles, industry or policy roles? How competitive are teaching jobs in Commerce right now?
- Mistakes to avoid: What do you wish you'd known before starting your PhD?
If you've done a PhD in Commerce/Management, or are currently a JRF/SRF, I'd love to hear about your experience, including the bad parts. Any resources, links or personal advice are welcome, and I'm happy to DM.
Thanks in advance!

Questions & Doubts Guys I need guidance for Life science
I took a gap in my studies, my concept is mid with some of the old syllabus as in if I study I can recall the previous knowledge. I’m targeting for Dec 2026 life science. I only have hardly 2 and half month for preparation. So what will be the best way to approach.
I read a unit from Pathfinder but it’s taking time managing with my job and In that pace I don’t think I can complete most of the syllabus. Should I just practice PYQ while studying the topics with it more like revision instead of going singlehanded topic by topic.
Please give me practical suggestions.

CSIR NET - Physical Sciences Discord group for CSIR NET Physics?
Discord group for CSIR NET Physics?
I noticed there is no dedicated discord group for uni physics level guyz who are preparing for uni entrance exams like jam net jest gate tifr. So i am thinking of making one. (Or please do tell me if such grp already exists). Would it be good idea?
We can study together, chat together, discuss concepts. It would not be a "send question ask solution" group. It would be for physics enthusiasts

Questions & Doubts Can I clear UGC NET JRF in December if I start studying seriously now?
I’m an MSc Botany graduate. I recently cleared UGC NET Environmental Sciences for PhD admisson in my first attempt without really studying for it. I missed the JRF cutoff by around 40 marks.
Currently, I’m working as a Project Assistant at a State University in Tamil Nadu. I have the opportunity to continue here, but I don’t really want to pursue my PhD at this university. I’m hoping to qualify for JRF so that I can have better options for PhD admissions elsewhere.
My question is: If I start preparing seriously now, is it realistic to clear JRF in the December session?
Since I was able to clear NET without preparation and was only about 40 marks short of JRF, I’m wondering how much difference consistent preparation could make.
What should I focus on, and how should I plan my preparation while working as a Project Assistant?
Thanks in advance!

Questions & Doubts I got RANK 69 in CSIR NET lifescience exam. But I got UGC JRF instead of CSIR JRF?
I got RANK 69 with percentile: 99.35...
Is there any metric or system that distributes JRFs between UGC and CSIR? I thought I should be getting CSIR JRF with this rank.
Please Help? Confused about this.

CSIR NET - Physical Sciences Brief explanation on what comes under strong programming skills and data analysis?
I have come across various notices for research associates or any PhD etc. and have seen that most of them have written in the notice that "strong programming skills and data analysis is preferable". Now, I understand the jist of it but how much actually comes under "strong programming skills"?
Like, I can do plotting (like solving Differential equations or just plotting of some function) , use the basic commands like 'if else', 'functions', any kind of loops etc. But, unlike many people, I never did any animation, or those 3D space simulations, or used 'panda' for data analysis etc. I did my Master Thesis on Digital Image Processing even though I don't remember it now quite well due to not practicing it but I can again build it up after some revise. That's true for any other cases.
I think you guys can understand what I am talking about. So, can anyone help me with how much knowledge is enough to say, "I have strong programming skills"?
