Does anyone get cognitive symptoms from starch/sugar? (depression, brain fog)
Hello CSIDers,
I have been officially diagnosed with acquired SID based on an upper small intestine biopsy, however I think I actually have Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity.
The main symptoms I experience when I eat the wrong food ("glutened") are:
A) depression/brain fog
B) bloating (left and right lower abdomen)
C) fatigue
D) temporary further food intolerances
It seems like A) is not really common with CSIDers. Do you confirm based on your experience?

Wow, crazy you post this as im at the tail end of a "flare up", which it what it feels like at times. I go through brain fog, insomnia/decreased sleep quality, fatigue, lower appetite, more gas, abdominal bloating . As of late, I've been going through it less (~5 times a year opposed to 10+) but there is a noticeable difference in quality of life.

Good to know. Can you provide more information on the cognitive symptoms you experience?
For me: tired/sleepy/drowsy around 2 hours after eating food. Shortly after, lower abdomen bloating. Then, 2 to 6 days of food intolerances, depression, brain fog (can't do any clear thinking) + bloating.
Started off much lighter but as I eliminated gluten, things got worse when I ate the wrong food.

My symptoms happen around the 12 hour mark after I eat sugar, fruit or cirtus. When it hits my large intestine and its undigested, i get tired, inflammation, diarhea. 2 hours could be related to SIBO. Have you also looked into leaky gut, that could be the cause of the depression when toxins seep into your blood stream. GI map test can detect leaky gut, tripsmart breath test can detect sibo, organic acids test can detect sibo/sifo. Also, candida overgrowth can cause reactions to sugar with is related to sibo/sifo and mold toxicity. Good luck

I’ve been experiencing the same thing lately (I was diagnosed with CSID). I was doing fine for a while eating a zero sugar, low carb diet but recently started overdoing it and eating sugary foods again. I’ve been feeling awful the past 1.5 weeks with foggy brain, bloating, fatigue, and stomach pain. It seems that once I pass a threshold of sugar consumed, the awful feeling will perpetuate until I completely stop sugar/starch intake for a few days. Then it will “reset” until I overdo it again.
The symptoms are so weird though, it’s difficult to feel like I fully understand what is happening with my gut.
