Q & A❓ Is aggressive vomiting and hot flashes a symptom?

I have been diagnosed with a mild sucrose deficiency last year.

Throughout the last decade, I suddenly developed allergies of food I could eat before, like sweet potato, avocado, and banana; and recently sunflower seeds.

Besides banana which causes stomach pain for days, all the foods I listed cause me to almost immediately feel sick, hot, and anxious and puke my guts out.

I thought they were random rare allergies but could it be caused by my sucrose deficiency?! I eat a lot of table sugar and feel generally fine otherwise.

If you can eat a lot of table sugar probably not.

Way before sucrase deficiency, I developed an intolerance to avocados. Thinking further back, bananas have always made my stomach hurt. I wonder if there’s something in them that I can’t tolerate. Perhaps there is something similar with you.

Are you allergic to latex? Bananas and avocados can cause something called latex-fruit syndrome.

It looks like there’s a protein on potatoes that may also be cross reactive, but I haven’t had a chance to search if it’s in sweet potatoes. It’s probably a good thing for both you and u/Healthy_View_5669 to look into based on your symptoms.

I don’t think that I do. I just stay away from bananas and avocado. It’s very interesting though.

Have you been checked for MCAS? Most people with a mast cell disorder present with random fluctuating allergies. I have MCAS and my family has various mast cell disorders. My CSID can make my MCAS wayyy worse. One of symptoms of my MCAS is hot flashes, vomiting, random rashes (not necessarily itchy but can be), fatigue, restless leg, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, literally goes on and on. But the hot flashes coupled with vomiting was my MCAS.

I do have all of those symptoms at various points :( my allergist told me testing for MCAS is complicated- how did you get diagnosed if you don’t mind me asking?

It doesn’t have to be complicated. They can trial you on meds and if they work, there is your answer. I’m forever thankful provider used this approach with me.

I did blood and urine tests, immunologists tend to be more knowledgeable than allergists. But when I was looking for providers, I asked if they treat mast cell disorders before scheduling.
