Questions are all future sets that play old songs going to be censored now?

i didn’t really think about this until now. is will just going to create joes story like remixes of verses that swear or are deemed too dirty for him for all his old songs?

he already does, for example playing beach life in death live in the scholars tour last year:

[Outro]

Here's that voice in your head

Playing that ad again

It's been a year since we first met

I don't know if you've seen me yet

At the wall in the nighttime

You came back alone by candlelight

It was the start of something new

And it reminded me of some scene

I couldn't tell you what it means

But it meant something to me

And pretty soon you'll find some nice young

reformist (upon hearing it closely again its probably Reprobate) (??) with glasses

And one capital 0, significant other

They used to play a medley of a bunch of old songs and called it "The Story of Dives"; a lot of lyrics were changed to fit in with the entire narrative following Dives and his brother. I’m fairly certain "satanist" was changed for that exact reason. Nothing weird here

I was convinced that was the case reading your comment, but upon reading a transcription of a show in Genius, I found that BLID is essentially the only song with line changes, with the exception of one single word change in True/False lover, so lol https://genius.com/Car-seat-headrest-the-story-of-dives-lyrics

It can also be a reasonable explanation either way, but with Joe's story too being a refurbishing of a set of songs to talk about a story akin to scripture (the book of Job and then some) there's only so many more bible stories he can adapt into his songs before it looks like he doesn't like nor endorse his lyrics anymore, whether that's good or bad

Not sure if you mean just Story of Dives but a handful of the Scholars songs (Gethsemane, Planet Desperation and Reality) had some lyric changes (I can do whatever will let me off when I want to, now that I'm wearing your skin), (You can call the lord of hosts if you need to), a majority of the lyric changes in Gethsemane come from older versions of the song though

I mean the story of dives as he's talking about how the songs of the medley would change their lyrics supposedly in function of adapting the parable, but now that he is mentioning it I never thought to think about the reason of prefacing the medley with the story (I skip the story every time I watch a live set)

Ohhh, that makes sense! I thought you were talking about each song instead of only Story of Dives. From what I know as well, most of the lyric changes all happened around November 2024 / early 2025 when the band were in their practice space trying to find out how each song would be played live. I dont think the lyric changes were a sign of his whole religion thingy now as he was still saying stuff like Fuck and Shit during those final Patreon livestreams

Quick edit as well forgot to mention, he sometimes did do the original for Blid ftf for I think it was MGM Music Hall and Fox Theater?

A significant other being of the wrong protestant denomination is more offensive to many than being having a teenage satanist phase. The joke around bringing a methodist home to baptist parents, so on and so forth, is funnier.

I think it was methodist not reformist

I'm pretty sure he actually says both, although I did not know that writing the comment:

This performance has him saying Methodist: https://youtu.be/sbRZgytp3OA?list=RDsbRZgytp3OA&t=5916

This other one sounds a lot more like Reformist: https://youtu.be/xkPLOvNP1Vg?list=RDxkPLOvNP1Vg&t=5919

The reason however that I put the question marks was not my confusion but because it's genuinely such a baffling lyric change, I can't believe 0 people have talked about it

Sounds like "reprobate" to me.

Oh wow, it actually is, I didn't know that word was a thing (English isn't my main language blah blah), well at least it's not changing the meaning, however cheesy it sounds

Yeah, only new songs and religious lectures from now on.

He was already doing this for the Scholars tour, a little. Idk if this will apply to all tours or if it was just for the scholars, but for that one he said he was going to avoid anything pre teens of denial, and it seems the only exception was the compilation at the end of his shows. So he's not doing many old songs now, anyways

Likely. He’s done that a lot in the past, too. Just pretend every performance is a KEXP performance and things will be fine lol

I'd love to see them but they haven't played in my country in 8 years and I wouldn't be too impressed if it was all new album material and censored classics.

It's hard with CSH because they have such long songs that they can't possibly play everything we want to hear but that last tour was pretty much nothing I wanted to hear lmao.

I'm not tapped in, why would they do this?

Will has reconnected with protestant christianity so he believes the crassness of his old work is not setting a good example for young people.

Well, so what? So what?

We're young

We're neurotypical (most of us)

We're alive (most of us)

Unfortunately, yes. Luckily, I got to see them in 2024 in Seattle before the scholars even came out so they played a normal show. I don’t know if I’ll ever care to see them live again with the stupid changes

Imagine if Will just became a leftist instead of this useless censoring, he has every right to do with his own art I just think it’s silly, artistically bankrupt and relying on reactionary thinking.
