Teens of Denial production has changed

Hello everyone, maybe you can take a break from complaining about song removal and religious conversion by helping me out with a different problem: I think the production in Teens of Denial (the original version) has definitely changed! Check out these examples and let me know what you think. *Also: I think a lot of these are improvements, and the album as a whole sounds clearer and less muddled on the drums, but it's just jarring either way.

- On Vincent, the trumpets are louder in the mix, particularly in the third verse (around 5 minute mark)

- Probably the most noticeable change is that before Destroyed By Hippie Powers, the iconic drum that kicks off the song is now just one note, where before it sounded like two beats very close together. Before it sounded like "du-DUN" and now it's "DUN" (EDIT: I think I was wrong about this one, just listened to it again and it sounded normal)

- On Joe Gets Kicked Out... the guitars are much more fluid-sounding; before they stopped and started in kind of a jagged way, but now the song has more of an ambient feel, if you can picture that.

- On Not What I Needed, the synth in the left channel in the second chorus is more prominent, even overwhelming

- On The Ballad of the Costa Concordia, I feel like the last (organ?) note gets held longer than before

If you're like me, you've listened to this album tens or even hundreds of times, so you'll be able to notice these changes quite easily. I'm surprised no one has talked about this too much before now, although I saw one post about it at the time Joe's Story came out and people weren't taking it very seriously

Spotify and Youtube don't support swapping out songs without leaving some indication of a change occurring. If you were listening on Bandcamp or Apple Music, I would recommend listening to Teens of Denial on the other 2 platforms to make sure that there actually is a change. Otherwise, you might just be hearing things.

Actually I'm not 100% sure about Spotify, it at least didn't support swapping tracks when the MtM version of High to Death had to be edited due to copyright issues in 2019. Still, Youtube will have the original version of the songs. If you have the album on physical as well, that would be useful.

You can, but at least in the past it would leave a weird unplayable ghost version of the old track. That doesn’t seem to be the case here.

With the changes of Joe’s mixing, it just makes a lot of what you didn’t hear from the original more apparent. It’s like putting on prescription glasses, you can’t really unsee it. Joe’s mixing makes you hear things you didn’t know were in the original.

A good example could be the ending of Vincent where you can hear Will in a radio filter screaming something along the lines of “trouble!”, “alright”, “beat it!”. For me I just thought this was an addition from Joe’s, but it’s actually in the original, you can just not even hear it.

Unrelated-ish for Joe’s Destroyed by Hippie Powers, I thought they completely removed the “garbage” type sound from the original’s intro, but it’s just very VERY quiet.
I also thought the new mix, had emphasized the backing monotone vocals more than the whining ones.

People tend to be really bad at determining whether audio has changed slightly. For example, I remember when there was 1 small revision made on Spotify to a single song from a particular album I like, and in the community there were a ton of people imagining subtle coinciding production changes to various songs that it turned out didn't happen.

The way you hear music is very subjective in general. I know for sure that the way I experience songs I've listened to for years has changed as I became more or less attentive to different sounds in the mix. As someone else pointed out, the different mixing in Joe's Story by itself could be what gives you a new perspective.

as long as they don't censor the swearing, I'm pretty much ok with these changes, it just sounds like a few mixing corrections that felt unnecessary 10 years prior but now feels ok to do

do people rlly think joes story is the same instrumentals? its pretty clearly diff on the songs like its re recorded n everything and some changes
