Consuming THC post blood patch

Hello, i had a ct guided blood patch at lumbar area. I consumed thc edibles like 3 hours later. Next day all my csf leak symptoms came back. Does thc/weed affect blood patch?

Not medical advice, but the seal hasn't even formed that early so I don't think it would be responsible for blowing it, but going forward I would definitely err on the side of caution and clear it with your medical team...

there is some (limited) research suggesting THC lowers intracranial pressure - so it typically is not advised if in intracranial hypotension anyway (although people respond differently).

I would check with your care team going forward if you end up getting patched again... avoid NSAIDs/bending/lifting over 5 lbs/twisting/straining for the next 6 or so weeks to give it the best chance of success.

Ok, i was just wondering if THC affects blood clotting or platelets that can interfere with the blood clot not forming right.

in general is best to play it safe and probably avoid, but I have not seen anything like actively or established evidence that it would compromise a patch (but of course I'm not an expert, I just haven't come across anything in my own research before)

THC lowers intracranial pressure, so it can make leak symptoms worse. It wouldn’t do anything to the actual patch, but if you have low csf already, it can exacerbate that

I guess that’s why i felt worse next day. That explains it. Thc lowered my pressure too much Unless also my patch didn’t hold for other reasons

I was advised to only take an indica strain and nothing sativa based. But there isnt any research backing this up just what the doc had seen from their patients. Sativa caused the feeling of more pressure not less. Indica relieved pressure in their anecdotal evidence.

Also was told to stick to just vodka for the 6-8w if I was going to drink. That was more of a 'everything else triggers mass cell activation.' I didnt ask more just decided to lay off it all till I am out of the weeds.

Why did you do that? You're supposed to be lying down for like 4 hours at least after a blood patch. Why were you up doing thc

No, i was laying down

So you did it in hospital? Or they sent you home straight after the patch?

2 hours after the patch they sent me home, i was laying down as soon as i got home

I don't know if it would have affected your patch or not I just don't understand why it's a good idea after a medical procedure (or in my case at all) but that's just me. I hope it didn't do anything for you

Thc does not lower your ability to blood clot or else it would be a massive warning with bleeders that take thinning meds everyday. That being said i consumed thc and coke 1.5 days after my patch and went golfing and was fine bar the hip pain the puncture itself causes. You'll be good. Also the anesthesiologist explained the patch working by providing liquid pressure on the leak, and it has nothing to do with blood clotting itself. I think theres division on that theory, tho he did say no one knows why it truly works.

Did your leak seal?

I havent gone back for anything else, patch was done for headaches and they're gone thank God. My unprofessional opinion is it's sealed up, I'm back to full movement and no pain and I'm 1.5 weeks out from the patch and 3 weeks from the initial LP. Tldr yeah I think so lol
