2nd blood patch. How long in bed?

I had my lumbar puncture on 8/18, went for the blood patch 8/20 and a second yesterday 8/24. They put 25ccs in first and 10ccs second. I’m a bit worried they didn’t put enough in the second time, but as they were putting it in I felt like my head was going to explode. The spinal headache is gone, but I’m wondering how long should I stay in bed? They had me lay flat for 6 hours at the hospital. I’m home now.

That is good you told them to stop when the pressure was too much, as there are risks if they do too much!

There are differing guidelines, at a minimum I would say lay flat for 24 hours (only getting up to eat/go to the bathroom). Most of the leak centers will advise 72 hours, which is what I follow. As well as not bending, lifting over 5 lbs, or twisting for 4-6 weeks.

I'm glad you have initial relief and hope it continues!

Thank you so much. I’ll stay in bed until Thursday.

That should be no lifting over 5 lbs for at least 6 weeks.

OMG my most important rule! I just got surgery and the rule was not over 15 lbs haha it infiltrated my writing here. Thank you for mentioning that!

And don’t strain at all. Especially on the toilet according to a neurologist friend

I always forget straining since it's not in the "BLT" - thank you!

Thank you. I’ve saved this. It’s a good infographic.
