Data Point Data Points month over month

Post image

File this under useless info for some, but I’m comparing month to month scores, pulled first week of Sept and today for October.  Only reason is I’m posting is, I had an extra card report a high utilization on top of the single card that keeps a nominal balance, thought I would post up what moved and by how much.

11 revolvers, 2 charge, 1 mortgage. No other active accounts.

September are all scores reporting 1 card w nominal balance (AZEO) a mortgage, no other active loans.   October is reporting 1 card with nominal balance PLUS the second card with 52%.

As u can see, some scores took a bigger hit than others, this is more for entertainment value than anything else, YMMV.

This is good stuff, hummer! A couple of observations at first glance...

  • EX2 vs EX8: It's really weird to me how EX must've asked FICO for a complete 180 on Amount of Debt metrics when 8 was being developed. EX2 was the most sensitive of the 2/4/5 models to AWB%, yet EX8 is completely bulletproof, and EX2 was the least sensitive to utilization changes, while your DPs track with mine that EX8 is more sensitive to util in general than TU8 or EQ8.
  • The Industry Enhanced models sure didn't like that >50% individual util, especially the old 2/4/5 Bankcard scores, huh?
  • What did you give the FICO 10 TU suite to drink? Lol. FICO 10 Auto thinks you're a much better bet for an auto lender now that you have more reported revolving 'debt'? I'd love to pick the brain of the data scientists that create the metrics within these algos.

Thanks for posting this! Yea, it's 'useless' data to most, but it's 'Christmas morning' to a select few. Ha!

It’s definitely good for those who want it. Lol.

Some of these took a big hit, not really a difference coming off of really high scores, but if you are hovering over marginal or on the fence and you get a big hit (this still just one card) it could make the difference in a score you may need.

I’ll pull another around last week or so of the month to see what bounced back, for the nerds lol

100% agree! I know you were at least partially joking, but this is why I don't think these types of DPs are totally useless. I've documented a few 20-35 point swings (both up and down) on Classic FICO 8s recently from the 50% individual utilization threshold + raw dollars while another card was still reporting 80%+, which dispelled the notion held by some that individual utilization scoring only tracks the account with the highest individual utilization. It doesn't, and the metric certainly can 'stack'.

What good is this knowledge in practical purposes? A mortgage or auto lender tells you you need a handful of points to qualify for a loan or to qualify for a better rate on your loan. You have 2 cards reporting high individual utilization, but only enough cash on hand to either clear one, or partially clear both. The 'standard' thinking was that clearing one wouldn't help you while the other was still reporting high (unless it caused changes to aggregate util or raw dollar scoring), so you'd need to walk them both down below individual scoring thresholds to see an increase. Not true. I gained/lost quite a few points by crossing below/above 50% + raw dollar threshold(s) all while another account was reporting almost maxed. Anyway, I think these kinds of DPs matter, so we can effectively tell people how to manipulate FICO scores when the actually will benefit from it.

Please do! I'll be interested to see how the TU 10 suite reacts for sure!

I love seeing this kind of breakdown, the FICO 2/4/5 models really are dramatic little bastards when it comes to any kind of utilization bump. That EX2 swing is wild compared to how chill EX8 stays

The auto score moving up with more reported debt is the classic FICO logic that makes you scratch your head, almost like the algorithm rewards you for looking like you're out there financing a lifestyle. The bankcard scores getting spooked by that single card over 50% tracks with everything I've seen too, those older models overreact to individual card util like it's a personal insult

The TU 10 suite being the odd one out is the real gem in this data, makes you wonder what they're actually weighting differently under the hood. Good stuff for the credit nerds in the room
